For a quick DIY life-size board game, lay out a path on a clear floor with painter’s tape, then use dice to move through it. A ten-space path is an easy starting point. If you want a different kind of oversized game, you can build giant wooden blocks or use a ready-made game with its own board and rules.
Choose the kind of big board game you want
These options make different projects: a taped floor path lets you invent a layout, a wooden block game is a woodworking build, and a ready-made oversized game supplies a known ruleset. Choose based on your available floor or yard space, storage, tools, players’ ages, and whether people should move as the game pieces.

Make a custom floor board with painter’s tape
Plan a simple path
KiwiCo’s example uses ten spaces: ordinary squares, a diamond that sends a player forward, and triangles that send a player back. Mark a clear route from a start to a finish on the floor. The shapes and space count are a template, not a required format; adapt them to the room and the players.
Set the rules before play
- Use painter’s tape to mark the spaces, start, and finish.
- Decide what each marked shape means and make the rules visible to everyone before starting.
- Players take turns rolling a die and moving along the path according to the roll and any marked-space rules.
- In KiwiCo’s example, the first player to reach the finish wins.
KiwiCo describes its activity as taking 30 minutes to one hour and being for ages 3–11; those are the publisher’s activity descriptors, not a guarantee that every group will finish in that time or suit those ages equally.

Build a giant wooden block game
This is a separate project from a floor path: the pieces are stacked rather than walked through. Harbor Freight’s plan specifies six 2×4×8-foot hardwood boards, cut into 54 pieces measuring 10.5 inches each. It calls for sanding the block edges and includes an optional carrying-case plan. The plan names a miter saw and orbital sander. If you do not have access to those tools, borrowing or renting them—or choosing the tape layout—avoids making tool purchases central to a one-off activity. Harbor Freight also has a separate yard-dice project: it uses a 4×4 cedar post to make at least five oversized dice, with sanded edges and corners, painted pips, and outdoor varnish. That is an optional way to make a large randomizer, not a requirement for the taped board, which calls for ordinary dice. Harbor Freight advises wearing proper safety equipment while handling tools.

Use a ready-made oversized game
Spin Master lists a Giant SORRY set with a 64-inch-square vinyl mat, 12 pawns, a spinner, and an instruction sheet, described for indoor or outdoor play. Its product page is the source for those specifications; they are not independent durability test results. This route is suited to players who prefer included components and the product’s established rules over designing a path.
Sharper Image has listed a giant chess/checkers board in 4-foot and 10-foot configurations, but the page showed it out of stock in the retrieved listing. Availability can change; check the Giant Game Board listing before relying on it as an option.

Make the layout work for your space and players
- Measure the play area: a longer path needs more clear floor or yard space. Leave enough room around spaces for players to move safely.
- Think about storage: tape is temporary; wooden blocks need to be stored as loose pieces or in a case; a ready-made mat needs room to store when not in use.
- Choose how active the game should be: decide whether players themselves will move as pawns or whether they will move markers along the oversized board.
- Keep rules easy to see: for a custom path, use a small number of clear space effects and explain them before the first roll.
- Match the build to your tools: the taped version needs no lumber or powered tools; the block project involves repeated cuts and sanding.
