You can make a small Pepper’s Ghost display by placing a clear sheet at an angle between the viewer and a background scene, then lighting a separate hidden figure or image so its light reflects from the sheet toward the viewer. The background remains visible through the sheet, making the reflected subject look as if it is floating in the scene. This is a reflected-light illusion, not a true hologram.
How Pepper’s Ghost works
The transparent pane does not generate an image. It performs two jobs at once: it reflects some light from a concealed, illuminated subject toward the audience and transmits light from the visible scene behind it.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn the classic theatre arrangement, a large glass sheet sits between the audience and the stage. A hidden performer or image occupies a separate, concealed area and is illuminated independently. Light from that area strikes the glass; part of it reflects toward the audience, while light from the ordinary set passes through the glass. Because the reflected subject and the visible set occupy the same line of sight, the subject appears superimposed.
The effect depends more on contrast and controlled sightlines than on the glass itself. The hidden subject needs enough illumination to read in reflection, while unwanted reflections on the pane must be kept less prominent.

What you need for a tabletop version
- A clean, clear acrylic or other transparent plastic sheet.
- A visible background or scene behind the sheet.
- A separate image source or figure positioned where its light can reach the sheet and reflect toward the viewer.
- A small adjustable LED light for illuminating the hidden image source.
- A rigid support, clips or a simple frame to hold the sheet securely at an angle.
- A darker enclosure or shaded area around the hidden source, if the reflected image is being washed out by room light.
No single sheet thickness, brightness level or household-parts list is mandatory. Choose a pane that stays flat and stable in your frame, and tune the layout from the intended viewing position.
Classic theatre setup versus a DIY display
| Feature | Classic theatre arrangement | Tabletop adaptation |
|---|---|---|
| Reflecting surface | Large angled glass sheet | Clear plastic or acrylic sheet |
| Hidden space | Separate concealed area or performer behind the stage | Compact hidden compartment or space beside/behind the scene |
| Image source | Illuminated performer or theatrical image | Separately illuminated small figure or image source |
| Lighting control | Stage spotlight and carefully managed set lighting | Adjustable light on the hidden source and reduced stray reflections |
| Viewing position | Audience area planned around the stage sightline | One intended position or a limited viewing zone |
| Optical principle | Partial reflection plus transmission | Partial reflection plus transmission |
How to build the illusion
- Choose the viewing position. Decide where the viewer’s eyes will be and build around that line of sight. A small Pepper’s Ghost display is usually most convincing from the front rather than from every angle.
- Mount the clear sheet. Place the pane between the viewer and the visible scene. Keep it clean and free of fingerprints, and secure it so it cannot tilt or vibrate while the display is running.
- Start with an angled layout. The historical stage arrangement used a pane set at 45 degrees. Use that as a starting geometry, not a universal requirement. Adjust the angle and position until the reflected image lands where you want it in the scene.
- Set up the background. Put the ordinary set, backdrop or visible scene behind the pane. It should remain visible through the plastic rather than being hidden by a dark opaque panel.
- Hide the image source. Position a separate figure or image source outside the viewer’s direct sightline. The viewer should receive its light through reflection, not see the source itself.
- Illuminate the hidden subject. Aim the adjustable LED light at the hidden source. Increase its illumination until the reflection is readable, then reduce competing light on the pane and in the concealed area.
- Align from the audience side. Move the pane, background and hidden source in small increments while looking from the chosen viewing position. The apparent figure should sit in the intended part of the scene rather than drifting off the background.
- Test the room lighting. Dim surrounding light if it creates bright reflections on the sheet. Keep enough light on the visible scene for it to remain legible, but avoid lighting the hidden compartment so strongly that its edges become visible.
Lighting and contrast: the controls that matter most
Make the hidden image brighter than its surroundings
The reflected subject must compete successfully with the transmitted background. Light the hidden image directly and shade the area around it so the reflection has a clear outline.

Suppress reflections you do not want
Windows, lamps and bright clothing can reflect from the same pane and weaken the illusion. Reposition those sources, darken the surrounding enclosure or change the viewer’s angle before increasing the hidden light indefinitely.
Keep the pane visually unobtrusive
Dust, fingerprints and scratches scatter light and reveal the sheet. Clean it with a method suitable for the plastic you are using, and avoid bending it into a shape that introduces distracting highlights.

Troubleshooting
The ghost is too dim
- Increase light on the concealed image rather than lighting the entire enclosure.
- Reduce ambient light falling on the pane and the background.
- Check that the hidden source is actually in the pane’s reflective path from the viewer’s position.
The ghost is visible, but the background disappears
- Lower the hidden-source light slightly.
- Increase the background’s visibility without illuminating the concealed area.
- Recheck the pane angle so the reflected image and transmitted scene overlap instead of one covering the other.
You can see the hidden source directly
- Move it farther outside the direct sightline.
- Add a mask or enclosure that blocks a direct view while leaving the reflective path open.
- Test again from the exact position where the display will be watched.
The image appears in the wrong place
- Adjust the pane angle in small increments.
- Move the hidden source along the direction that changes its reflected position.
- Realign from the intended eye level; a setup aligned from above may not work from a seated viewpoint.
The effect only works from one spot
That is normal for a compact adaptation. Widening the viewing zone requires a different geometry and may reduce the brightness or alignment of the reflection. Design the display for a defined audience position when possible.
Why it is called Pepper’s Ghost
The illusion was first performed in 1862. It is named for John Henry Pepper, who helped turn the apparatus into a practical stage effect. Henry Dircks is also part of the apparatus’s history, so Pepper should not be described as its sole inventor. Historical descriptions of the theatre version place a large sheet of glass at the front of the stage at a 45-degree angle, with a concealed illuminated subject providing the reflected image.

Pepper’s Ghost is not a hologram
A hologram generally refers to an image produced by holographic recording or projection techniques. Pepper’s Ghost uses ordinary light, a transparent reflecting surface and careful positioning. The figure appears to float because reflected and transmitted light share the viewer’s line of sight; it is not a freestanding three-dimensional image.

Before you finish the display
- View it from the actual audience position, not only while working from the side.
- Secure the pane and any overhead or elevated parts against tipping.
- Check that the light does not overheat the enclosure or shine directly into viewers’ eyes.
- Mark the successful pane and light positions so the alignment can be restored after cleaning or transport.
