How to Make a Solar System Project: Choose a Scale and Build It

Plan a solar system project by choosing what to scale, measuring the available space, calculating planet sizes or distances, and labeling the model honestly.

To make a solar system project, first decide whether you want to show planet sizes, their distances from the Sun, or both. Choose a display space, set one consistent scale for the relationship you are modeling, then measure, place, and label the planets. A size model fits on a tabletop; a distance model can use a long string or an outdoor path. A combined model is more demanding because the real distances are enormous compared with planet diameters.

Choose what your project will show

A useful model makes clear which part of the solar system is to scale. Planet diameters and distances from the Sun are very different kinds of measurements, so a compact display usually scales one or the other rather than both.

Model type What is to scale Space and display Materials or format
Planet-size model Planet diameters relative to one another; gaps between planets are not necessarily to scale. Compact; suitable for a wall or tabletop. Drawings, cutouts, or objects sized using planet-to-Earth diameter ratios. NASA/JPL Education gives this approach in Make a Scale Solar System and Create a Solar System Scale Model With Spreadsheets.
Distance model Each planet’s average distance from the Sun. Needs a long line or open outdoor area, depending on the scale. Beads on string, chalk marks, cones, yard stakes, or other markers. NASA/JPL’s Solar System Bead Activity uses beads and string.
Combined size-and-distance model Both planet diameters and distances, using one consistent scale. Requires substantially more room than a size model. Use small planet representations and widely spaced markers. With Earth 1 cm across, Neptune would be about two miles from the Sun, according to NASA/JPL Education’s 2024 lesson.
Orbit-and-order activity Planet order and movement around the Sun, not necessarily measured distances. Can be adapted to a classroom or other open space. Make or use planet representations, arrange them in order, and move them around the Sun; NASA Science’s Make a Model Solar System also suggests optional asteroid-belt and Kuiper-belt additions.

For a straightforward art or classroom project, a planet-size model is easiest to fit. Choose a distance model if you want the spacing to be the main lesson. A combined model is worthwhile only if you can accommodate its large footprint.

Choose the space first, then the scale

Measure the wall, board, table, string, or outdoor route available before deciding on measurements. For a distance model, choose how many centimeters represent one astronomical unit (AU). One AU is the average distance from the Sun to Earth: about 150 million kilometers (93 million miles), as NASA/JPL describes in its project guidance. For a planet-size model, choose Earth’s model diameter and calculate the other planets from that reference.

NASA/JPL Education’s distance-model example uses 10 cm per AU; Neptune ends up about 10 feet from the Sun. The 10 cm-per-AU example comes from NASA/JPL Education’s spreadsheet lesson, whose publication date is not shown on the page. For comparison, NASA/JPL’s bead activity gives 1 AU as 149,597,871 kilometers (92,955,807 miles); its publication date is not shown on the page.

Scaling both sizes and distances can produce a dramatic result, but it may not suit a small project. NASA/JPL Education’s 2024 lesson explains that if Earth is 1 cm across, Neptune would be about two miles away. The same lesson suggests reducing Earth to only a few millimeters across to make a combined model more manageable. The smaller the model planets become, the harder they may be to see, so consider whether visitors need to recognize the objects as well as understand the scale.

Calculate your planet measurements

For a distance model

Multiply each planet’s distance from the Sun in AU by your chosen number of centimeters per AU:

Model distance = planet’s distance in AU × centimeters per AU

  • Fun learning tool: You and your kids had a great time painting and putting this together and learnt a lot about the planets in the process. It was a decent lesson representing the Solar system for a young child. Perfect for handmade craft, DIY decoration, school project, science projects and more.

For example, at 10 cm per AU, a planet whose average distance is 5 AU would be placed 50 cm from the Sun marker. Use one scale throughout, and keep units consistent. For a string model, measure each position outward from the Sun end rather than treating the beads as equal intervals.

Model planet diameter = chosen Earth model diameter × planet diameter relative to Earth

NASA/JPL’s spreadsheet lesson describes proportional calculations for planet sizes and distances. If you draw or cut out planets, keep the same size scale for every planet; do not suggest that the distances between them match unless you have calculated those too.

For a combined model

Use one scale for both diameters and distances. The diameter calculation uses Earth’s chosen model diameter as its reference; the distance calculation uses a matching distance scale. If the result will not fit, reduce the whole model’s scale rather than shrinking the distances alone. If you decide to show sizes and distances at different scales to fit the space, label that choice clearly instead of calling the entire display a single-scale model.

Build and label the display

  1. Gather materials. For a string model, NASA/JPL lists colored craft pony beads, five meters of string per learner, a small piece of cardboard, and a ruler or meter stick. Its project guidance also suggests chalk, cones, yard stakes, popsicle sticks, or other markers for showing positions. Ordinary household craft materials are enough; a special kit is not required.
  2. Mark the Sun and the planet positions. Use your calculations to measure outward from the Sun. On string, place a bead at each measured position. Outdoors, mark locations with chalk or set out markers. A scale distance model shows each planet’s orbital radius; it does not represent all the planets lined up on one side of the Sun at the same moment.
  3. Add the planet representations. For a size model, draw, paint, or cut out circles using the calculated diameters. For a distance model, use cards or small markers to identify each location; the marker itself does not need to be the planet’s true scaled size unless you are also modeling diameters.
  4. Label in order from the Sun. Add each planet’s name at its representation or position, and make the Sun’s location easy to find.
  5. Post the scale and explain simplifications. State what one centimeter represents, or give Earth’s model diameter, and say whether the display scales sizes, distances, or both. If a drawing is enlarged for visibility or a separate size scale is used, identify that as a simplification.

Adapt the project to the learner and setting

NASA/JPL Education lists its Make a Scale Solar System activity for grades 2–11 and estimates 30–60 minutes. Younger children can focus on making planet representations, putting them in order, and moving them around a Sun marker; NASA Science’s younger-student activity suggests optional additions such as the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt. For older students or a more measurement-focused display, calculating a distance scale makes the large gaps between planets visible.

If you are painting a wall or board rather than laying out measured markers, treat the artwork as a size or order illustration unless you calculate and label distances too. Clear labels let viewers enjoy the picture without mistaking it for a measured map.
