Handwork—activities such as knitting, sewing, pottery, embroidery, papercraft, and woodwork—can offer a creative, purposeful way to spend time, and some people also value the social connection it brings. Studies report encouraging wellbeing findings, but they do not prove that handwork reliably produces lasting mental-health improvements for everyone.
What are the possible benefits of handwork?
Handwork can bring together making, attention, practice, and personal meaning. A 2024 scoping review of 25 studies on needlecraft—including sewing, crocheting, knitting, lacemaking, embroidery, and quilting—grouped reported experiences into four themes:
- Mental wellbeing: Participants described experiences related to wellbeing.
- Social connection and belonging: Needlecraft could be associated with contact with others and a sense of being valued or included.
- Purpose and achievement: Making something may offer satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.
- Identity, family, culture, and legacy: Needlecraft may connect with personal identity and relationships across generations or communities.
These are themes mapped across studies, not effects guaranteed for every person. A scoping review describes the shape of a research area; it does not establish that needlecraft is a clinical treatment.
A broader 2025 scoping review analyzed 181 studies of handmade activities across fields including psychology, marketing, technology, design, and health. Its breadth makes handmaking relevant to discussions of individual and societal wellbeing, but the number of studies is not proof of one consistent effect across different crafts or people. Can crafting help with stress or mental health?
There is some encouraging evidence, especially from studies in which crafts were part of an intervention. A 2025 systematic review by Bukhave and colleagues included 19 eligible studies of crafts-based interventions, including pottery, embroidery, knitting, papercraft, and woodwork. The authors reported short-term improvements across varied outcomes, such as anxiety, stress, depression, mood, wellbeing, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.
The studies varied in participants, activities, outcomes, and quality. Interventions were delivered or supervised by art therapists, nurses, or occupational therapists and lasted from 10 minutes to 16 weeks. Only one study assessed whether improvements continued in the weeks after treatment. The review therefore supports cautious interest in crafts-based interventions—not a claim that a hobby reliably improves mental health long term, or that it replaces clinical care. What does knitting research say?
An international online survey received responses from 3,545 knitters recruited through a knitting website. Respondents commonly said they knitted for relaxation, stress relief, and creativity. More frequent knitting was associated with feeling calm and happy; group knitting was associated with perceived happiness and better social contact and communication.
Those results are associations, not proof that knitting caused the reported feelings. The sample was self-selected and consisted mostly of white adult women who knitted frequently, so it should not be treated as representative of everyone. Read the survey study in the British Journal of Occupational Therapy.

Which handwork activity should you choose?
No evidence here establishes one craft as best for wellbeing. Use practical fit and personal interest to choose; these considerations can make an activity easier to try, but are not proven predictors of a health outcome.
- Materials and space: Consider what you can readily obtain and where you can work comfortably.
- Movement and tools: Think about whether the motions and equipment suit your access needs and preferences.
- Task style: Decide whether you prefer repetitive motions or varied steps and decisions.
- Company: Consider whether you want a solo activity or a group setting.
- Personal meaning: Choose something that connects with your interests, culture, or the kind of object you want to make.
If you want to try knitting, needles and yarn are simply tools for getting started—not a purchase that guarantees a wellbeing benefit. The same principle applies to any craft: choose an activity because it appeals to you, and adapt or stop if it does not feel comfortable.

How strong is the overall evidence?
The evidence is promising but mixed in kind. Intervention studies report short-term improvements, while surveys and scoping reviews offer insights into people’s experiences and the range of research. These approaches do not establish the same thing: self-reported associations cannot show cause and effect, and reviews that map themes do not prove treatment efficacy. The 2025 systematic review concludes that crafts-based interventions may benefit mental health and wellbeing, while calling for more high-quality research, including research into how the interventions work.
