iMovie can create a time-lapse effect by speeding up video you have already recorded. It is an editor, not an interval camera: if you have not captured the scene yet, record it with a camera or phone time-lapse mode first, then bring the resulting clip into iMovie. On Mac, custom speed controls make very short results practical; the standard iPhone and iPad control reaches 2×.
This guide covers the Mac, iPhone, and iPad workflows, speed planning, audio, Cinematic-mode limitations, troubleshooting, and export choices.

Before you start
Know what iMovie is doing
iMovie retimes an existing video clip. It does not document a feature that captures one frame at intervals for hours. A phone or camera’s dedicated time-lapse mode is the better choice for a true long-duration capture; iMovie is useful afterward for trimming, titles, music, color adjustments, and export.
Plan the finished length
Use this simple calculation before editing:
Final duration = original duration ÷ speed multiplier

- 10 minutes at 10× produces about 1 minute.
- 30 minutes at 30× produces about 1 minute.
- 2 hours at 120× produces about 1 minute.
These examples are planning arithmetic, not promises about a particular iMovie version. Stable footage, consistent exposure, and enough motion in the scene will make the accelerated result easier to watch.
Make a time lapse in iMovie on Mac
- Open iMovie and create a new movie project, or open an existing one.
- Import the source video if it is not already in your media library. iMovie can import from an iPhone or iPad through its Import window; see Apple’s Mac import guide.
- Drag the video into the timeline.
- Click the clip to select it.
- Click the Speed button in the adjustment bar.
- Open the speed pop-up menu and choose Fast. Apple’s default Fast setting is 2×.
- Choose another preset, or choose Custom and enter a speed value when you need a much shorter clip. Mac therefore provides more aggressive retiming control than the standard mobile slider. See Apple’s Mac speed guide.
- Preview the result, then drag the on-timeline speed slider to fine-tune it. The clip’s changing duration is visible as you adjust it.
- Trim the beginning and end to remove tripod setup, camera movement, or time after the action finishes.
- Mute or replace the original audio if it becomes distracting, then export the movie.
Speed only part of a clip
Hold R and drag across the range you want to retime. Apply the Speed control to that selection, using a custom value if necessary. This lets you keep an introduction at normal speed, accelerate repetitive action, and slow an important moment. The Smooth option can make the change between normal and accelerated sections more gradual.

Reverse plays the selected clip backward; it is a creative option, not a requirement for a time lapse. If it is enabled accidentally, turn it off before exporting. The Preserve Pitch checkbox keeps the original pitch when changing speed.

Make a time lapse in iMovie on iPhone
- Open an iMovie movie project.
- Tap the video clip in the timeline.
- Tap the Speed button.
- Drag the speed slider to the right. The value shown beneath the clip is relative to normal speed: 2× is twice as fast and 1/2× is half speed.
- Play the clip to check the pacing.
- Tap Reset if you want to return the clip to normal speed, then adjust again.
- Tap outside the inspector when finished.
Apple’s iPhone guide documents a maximum of 2× for this standard control, so a 10-minute clip can be reduced only to about 5 minutes there. You can divide a clip into multiple ranges and give each range its own speed. For the exact controls, see Apple’s iPhone speed guide.
Make a time lapse in iMovie on iPad
- Open a movie project and tap the clip in the timeline.
- Tap Speed.
- Drag the slider right to accelerate.
- Use the yellow range handles or Add to apply different speeds to separate sections.
- Preview the edit and tap Reset to restore normal speed for the whole clip if needed.
Apple’s current iPad guide documents 2× as the fastest standard setting and 1/8× as the slowest. Freeze-frame controls can create an intentional pause, but they are separate from the time-lapse effect. See Apple’s iPad speed guide.
Choose a speed that looks intentional
Start with the target duration
Work backward from where the video will be shown. A one-minute social post, a short painting-process clip, and a longer landscape study may need very different multipliers. On Mac, enter a custom speed that matches your calculation. On iPhone or iPad, the 2× ceiling may leave a long recording far too long; transfer it to a Mac or use a tool with a higher documented speed range rather than assuming repeated 2× applications will multiply without limit.

- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Vary speed by content
- Trim stationary setup and teardown first.
- Split where the scene changes.
- Use a faster setting for repetitive portions and a slower one when viewers need to understand a gradual change.
- Keep transitions restrained. Continuous motion usually sells a time lapse better than a collection of unrelated transition effects.
- Preview at full-screen size; a movement that seems acceptable in the small viewer may feel too abrupt when enlarged.
Improve unstable footage
Speeding video does not repair shaky capture, a low frame rate, or abrupt camera movement. Crop or stabilize where your available iMovie controls allow it, and consider removing sections with distracting bumps. A tripod or other stable support matters most when recording the original footage.
Handle audio deliberately
Accelerated speech, traffic, or room sound is often unpleasant. For most time lapses, mute the clip or detach its audio and add music, narration, or a carefully chosen piece of natural sound separately.
On iPhone and iPad, iMovie preserves pitch by default when speed changes. In Project Settings, enable Speed changes pitch if you intentionally want the pitch to rise or fall with the retiming. On Mac, use Preserve Pitch in the speed controls when the original sound should remain intelligible. These settings affect the audio treatment; they do not make a noisy recording into clean music.

Cinematic mode and other editing limits
Complete Cinematic focus and depth-of-field adjustments before changing speed, or duplicate the project first. Apple warns that retiming a Cinematic video on iPhone or iPad removes the ability to edit its Cinematic effects afterward. On Mac, changing speed prevents later focus adjustment, although depth of field can still be adjusted. The clip itself remains usable; only those later Cinematic controls are restricted.
Fix common iMovie time-lapse problems
The Speed button is missing
- Make sure a video clip in the timeline—not a background or audio track—is selected.
- On Mac, click the clip before looking in the adjustment bar.
- On iPhone or iPad, tap the clip so the bottom inspector appears.
- In a Magic Movie or storyboard project, open the clip’s editing controls first; Apple documents those controls in its Magic Movie and storyboard guide.
- If labels differ substantially, update iMovie through the App Store. Apple’s iMovie Support page links to current device guides.
- If playback or the project behaves inconsistently, duplicate the project before making further changes.
2× is not fast enough
Apple’s documented standard iPhone and iPad control stops at 2×. Move the footage to a Mac and use a higher preset or Custom speed, or choose a dedicated time-lapse/editor app with a suitable documented range. If you have not recorded yet, capture the scene with a dedicated camera time-lapse mode instead of making an extremely long ordinary video.
The result is jerky
Reduce the speed, remove abrupt camera movement, and crop or stabilize the source where possible. A low frame rate or uneven exposure can still produce a stuttering result after retiming; iMovie’s speed control cannot recreate frames that were never recorded.

The subject disappears too quickly
Lower the multiplier or split the clip so important moments run more slowly. A time lapse should compress waiting, not erase the information viewers came to see.
The clip plays backward
On Mac, reopen the speed controls and disable Reverse.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You cannot extend the clip later
Trimming removes material; it cannot create frames beyond those in the source. Apple notes that a video cannot be lengthened past its available source frames in its trim and arrange guide.
Export the finished time lapse
Share a finished movie on iPhone or iPad
- In the Projects browser, tap the project.
- Tap Share, then Share Video.
- Tap Options.
- Choose an available resolution and frame rate; optionally choose HDR.
- Tap Save Video or Save to Files, or send it with AirDrop or another service.
Available resolution, frame-rate, and HDR choices depend on the project’s source media. Apple recommends HDR only when the target device supports it; turning HDR off improves compatibility. For export details, see Apple’s iPad video-sharing guide.
- 1080p: a practical choice for general sharing and smaller files.
- 4K: use it when the source supports it and you need maximum detail or expect to crop.
- Frame rate: match the source and destination when possible.
Avoid Mail or Messages when quality matters: Apple documents that those routes create a 360p, 30-fps video.
Share Video versus Export Project
Share Video creates the finished movie that viewers watch. Choose Export Project when you need to continue editing on another Apple device or in Final Cut Pro; Apple says the export contains the project and its media as one file. Shared iPad has a limitation that prevents sharing projects to iMovie for macOS. See Apple’s project-export guide.

Quick Recap
When iMovie is not the right tool
- Use a camera’s built-in time-lapse mode when the scene must be recorded over many hours with interval capture.
- Use a dedicated mobile time-lapse application when the mobile 2× ceiling is too restrictive.
- Use a more advanced desktop editor when you need optical-flow interpolation, motion tracking, granular keyframing, complex stabilization, or precise control over hundreds of still frames.
- Consider Final Cut Pro for a more complex Apple-device workflow while keeping the original project available for further editing.
