“Two-sided” can mean three different things in Adobe InDesign: facing pages shown as left/right spreads, a document printed on both sides of a sheet, or a booklet whose pages are rearranged for folding and binding. For a normal book, magazine, or brochure layout, enable Facing Pages. For physical front-and-back printing, also configure duplex printing. For a folded booklet, use File > Print Booklet rather than manually rearranging pages.

Adobe’s current InDesign documentation treats these as separate parts of the workflow.

Choose the right InDesign workflow

What you want Use this
Left and right pages appear together while you design Facing Pages
A sheet prints on its front and back Your printer’s Duplex or Print on Both Sides setting
Pages are rearranged for folding and stapling File > Print Booklet
A trifold or sequential foldout is imposed Print Booklet > Consecutive
A simple flyer has different front and back artwork Two normal document pages, with duplex printing handled at output

Facing Pages changes the document’s editing layout; it does not turn on double-sided printing. A facing-pages document can still be exported as an ordinary PDF with pages in normal reading order.

Create a new facing-pages document

  1. Choose File > New > Document.
  2. Choose the Print category, if it is available in your release.
  3. Set the finished page size, orientation, and number of pages.
  4. Turn on Facing Pages.
  5. Set your margins and columns.
  6. Expand Bleed and Slug and enter the bleed specified by your printer.
  7. Select Create.

Open Window > Pages to verify the result. In a typical left-to-right publication, the first page may appear alone, followed by paired interior spreads, with the final page or back cover at the end. The exact arrangement depends on page count, binding direction, and document settings.

When Facing Pages is enabled, margin fields normally become Inside and Outside. Inside is the binding-side edge; Outside is the edge facing away from the spine. The inside margin often needs additional space, especially for perfect-bound publications, but the printer’s specifications take priority.

Convert an existing document to facing pages

  1. Open the document.
  2. Choose File > Document Setup.
  3. Enable Facing Pages.
  4. Confirm the page size and page count.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Open Window > Pages and inspect every spread.

Switching the document structure does not intelligently redesign every object. Check text frames, images, margins, page numbers, parent-page assignments, and any artwork crossing the spine. For a substantial conversion, File > Adjust Layout can help reposition objects automatically, but it still requires a manual review. See Adobe’s guidance for changing document setup.

Design inside and outside pages correctly

A left/right spread is not simply one wide canvas. It consists of two pages separated by a spine or gutter.

  • Keep important text and logos away from the spine. A headline near the fold can become difficult to read or lose letters in binding.
  • Use crossover artwork deliberately. A photograph or background can continue across the spine, but align it with the printer’s trim and binding tolerances.
  • Use parent pages for recurring elements. A parent spread can contain left- and right-page variants for headers, folios, running titles, guides, and text frames.
  • Use separate parents where needed. A cover, contents page, chapter opener, and ordinary interior spread often need different layouts.

For automatic page numbers, place the page-number marker on the appropriate parent page. To change where numbering begins or to create front matter, use Layout > Numbering & Section Options. You can use Roman numerals for front matter and Arabic numerals for the main text. Changing a starting number can also affect whether a page falls on the left or right side, so check the Pages panel afterward. Adobe documents these controls in its numbering and section options guide.

Make a simple front-and-back document

For a two-sided flyer, card, form, or one-sheet handout, you usually do not need a continuous book-like spread.

  1. Create two pages at the finished size: page 1 for the front and page 2 for the back.
  2. Leave Facing Pages disabled if the pages are independent rather than a continuous spread.
  3. Set bleed and safe areas according to the printer’s specification.
  4. Export a PDF with pages in normal order.
  5. In the printer dialog, select Print on Both Sides, Duplex, or the equivalent option.

For portrait pages that turn like a book, Flip on Long Edge is commonly correct. Flip on Short Edge is more typical for pages that turn upward, such as some calendar-style layouts. Driver labels and behavior vary, so print one marked test sheet before running the final job.

Print facing pages as spreads

To print each left/right pair together for a proof or a printer that specifically requests reader spreads:

  1. Choose File > Print.
  2. In the General section, select Spreads instead of individual pages.
  3. Check the paper size and scaling.
  4. Enable the printer’s duplex setting if the spreads must print front and back.
  5. Print a test sheet.

If a spread is larger than the selected paper, InDesign may print only the portion that fits unless you select Scale To Fit. This is a proofing or special-output workflow, not the default method for making a folded booklet.

Make a folded booklet

For a saddle-stitched or bound booklet, keep the InDesign file in normal reading order. Do not manually move the last page next to the first page or otherwise build printer spreads by hand.

  1. Choose File > Print Booklet.
  2. Choose the booklet type that matches production:
    • 2-up Saddle Stitch for pages folded and stapled through the spine.
    • 2-up Perfect Bound for signatures intended for adhesive binding.
    • Consecutive for sequential panels and foldouts.
  3. Select Print Settings to configure paper size, marks, bleed, color output, and odd/even sequences.
  4. Return to the Print Booklet dialog and inspect spacing, margins, bleed, creep, and signature settings where available.
  5. Print the result or save the imposed output as a PDF, if appropriate.

Adobe says Print Booklet performs imposition in the print stream. It can print or save the imposed result as a PDF, but it does not create a new InDesign document containing the rearranged pages. The source file remains easier to edit, number, proof, and revise.

Saddle-stitch page counts

For 2-up Saddle Stitch, the page count must be divisible by four. If it is not, InDesign adds blank pages to complete the final signature.

Document pages Result
4 No added pages
8 No added pages
10 Two blank pages may be added
12 No added pages

Do not confuse a blank page intentionally included in your document with a blank printer spread added during imposition. If an intentional blank page is truly empty, InDesign may not recognize it as intended. Add a text or placeholder frame, or enable Print Blank Pages in Print Settings. Confirm the desired result with the printer.

Make a trifold brochure

  1. Create six pages representing the six panels.
  2. Use the actual finished panel dimensions rather than treating the entire sheet as one oversized page.
  3. Design the panels in normal reading order.
  4. Choose File > Print Booklet.
  5. Select 3-up Consecutive.
  6. Review the imposed front and back before printing.

A standard trifold is not always made from six mathematically identical panels. The panel folded inward may need to be slightly narrower, particularly with thicker paper. Obtain the printer’s template or panel-width specification before finalizing the artwork.

Bleed, safe areas, and crossover artwork

  • Bleed is artwork extending beyond the trim edge so that small cutting variations do not create white slivers.
  • Crossover artwork continues across a gutter or spine.
  • Safe area is the region where essential text, logos, and other important details should remain.

There is no universal bleed or inside-margin value that overrides a printer’s production specification. Requirements vary with paper, trim, binding, folding, and finishing. In Print Booklet, Adobe provides controls for page spacing, bleed between pages, margins, creep, and fitting marks and bleeds. Use those controls only in accordance with the printer’s instructions.

Prevent accidental repagination

In the Pages panel, InDesign can automatically reshuffle pages when pages are added, deleted, or moved. The relevant controls are:

  • Allow Document Pages to Shuffle
  • Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle

These controls determine whether pages return to normal two-page spreads or remain as special “island spreads.” Island spreads can be useful for foldouts, gatefolds, and multi-page panoramas, but disabling shuffling casually can create confusing page-order problems. Adobe explains this behavior in its guidance on redistributing spreads and pages.

For ordinary books and magazines, keep normal shuffling enabled unless you have a specific production reason to create a nonstandard spread.

  1. Choose File > Print Booklet.
  2. Open Print Settings.
  3. Set Sequences to Odd Pages Only.
  4. Print the first side.
  5. Mark the sheet’s top edge and label its front and back.
  6. Reload or flip the sheet according to the printer’s feed direction.
  7. Return to Print Settings and choose Even Pages Only.
  8. Print the second side.

Results depend on whether the printer outputs sheets face up or face down, reverses page order, and feeds paper from a particular edge. If the back is upside down, change the reload direction or try the alternate long-edge/short-edge setting. Never assume one setting works for every printer.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause What to do
The back side is upside down Wrong flip edge, reload direction, or driver rotation Mark a test sheet, record how it exits, then test the alternate edge or reload direction.
Pages are in the wrong order Reader spreads were confused with printer spreads Keep the source in reading order and use Print Booklet when folding or binding is required.
Unexpected blank pages appear Saddle-stitch count is not divisible by four, or a blank page was not recognized Check page count, add an object to an intentional blank page, or enable Print Blank Pages.
Pages no longer pair correctly Shuffling was disabled, an island spread was created, or pages were dragged incorrectly Open Window > Pages, inspect the panel menu, and re-enable the appropriate shuffle option.
Objects moved after Facing Pages was enabled The document structure changed without fully converting the layout Use Adjust Layout where appropriate, then inspect every spread manually.
The spread is clipped when printed The spread exceeds the selected paper size Choose suitable paper or select Scale To Fit for a proof, understanding that scaling changes the output size.
The printer requests a different PDF The printer may want individual pages, reader spreads, or imposed printer spreads Ask which structure and PDF standard they require before exporting or imposing.

Export and send the file to a printer

Before exporting, ask the printer whether it wants:

  • Individual PDF pages in reading order
  • Reader spreads
  • Printer spreads already imposed
  • A particular press-ready PDF/X standard

Unless the printer specifically requests imposition, send pages in normal reading order and preserve the required bleed. Confirm color settings, crop marks, font handling, trim size, binding direction, and whether a physical proof is required. Do not assume that an exported facing-pages PDF should be manually rearranged.

For right-to-left publications, binding direction changes page order and spread orientation. Set the appropriate direction for the publication and approve a printer proof before production. Mixed page sizes and foldouts are possible through InDesign’s Page tool, but they complicate bleed and imposition and should follow a printer-supplied template.

Final checklist

  • Have you decided whether you need facing pages, duplex output, or booklet imposition?
  • Is Facing Pages enabled only when the layout needs left/right spreads?
  • Are the page count and binding method correct?
  • Are inside margins and safe areas appropriate for the binding?
  • Does the bleed match the printer’s specification?
  • Is the source document still in normal reading order?
  • Are intentional blank pages preserved?
  • Has a physical duplex or booklet test been printed?
  • Does the printer want individual pages, reader spreads, or printer spreads?

Menu names can vary slightly between InDesign releases, but the distinction remains the same: Facing Pages controls how you design, duplex settings control how sheets are printed, and Print Booklet controls how pages are imposed for folding and binding.
