A whipped woven circle is built from eight straight-stitch spokes, then filled by weaving thread clockwise over one spoke and under the next two. The result is a raised, textured circle that can finish a flower center or add detail to an appliqué eye.

Materials for a whipped woven circle
The American Patchwork & Quilting tutorial demonstrates the stitch with a size 24 chenille needle, chosen for its larger eye, and variegated pearl cotton. These are the materials shown, not stated requirements. A related pillow project uses turquoise perle cotton No. 5 for the circle inside a goat’s eye; it also outlines the eye in gold perle cotton No. 3. Those thread sizes are examples from that project, not universal specifications.

How to stitch the circle
1. Make the spoke foundation
Work eight straight stitches of roughly equal length, radiating from a shared center to create a wheel. The spokes form the framework for the woven surface, so keep their outer ends arranged around a circle.

2. Start weaving at the center
Bring the needle up close to the center of the spokes. Work clockwise: pass over one spoke, then under that spoke and the next adjacent spoke. Continue around the circle with the same over-one, under-two movement.
3. Fill the spokes and finish
Repeat the weaving path until the spokes are covered. Keep the needle and thread above the appliqué foundation as you weave; catching the foundation can pull or stitch down the fabric underneath. When you reach the outside edge, go over one spoke and take the needle back into the background to secure the finish.

Adjusting the look
The tutorial notes that pulling the working thread more taut creates more texture. The source does not quantify the effect, so use tension as a visual choice: adjust it while working to create the surface you want without treating a particular tightness as a required setting. Variegated cotton provides changing color along the thread; a solid color is another straightforward design choice, though the tutorial does not compare their results.
Where to use the stitch
The circle’s compact, dimensional texture suits a flower center or a feature on an appliqué design. The tutorial suggests a flower center or bird appliqué eye, and a related pillow project places one inside a goat’s eye. These examples show the stitch used as surface embellishment rather than as a structural seam.
