To sew plush fabric successfully, keep every piece’s nap facing the same direction, cut in a way that protects the pile, and stabilize shifting layers before stitching. The right technique depends on whether you’re working with short-pile minky, textured plush, fleece, or long-pile faux fur—there is no single cutting tool or needle that suits them all.

Before cutting, check the pile length, backing, stretch, and how easily the surface slips. Short-pile microfiber plush such as minky behaves differently from long-pile faux fur. Plush has a nap: strokes in opposite directions can reflect light differently, making adjacent pieces look like different shades.

Mark the top of each pattern piece, then arrange pieces so the nap runs consistently across the project. The American Sewing Guild’s faux-fur guidance recommends a with-nap layout. For microfiber plush, the Sewing & Craft Alliance guide notes that the fabric is usually a knit, with more stretch crosswise than lengthwise. Follow the pattern layout; when fit depends on stretch, orient the greatest stretch around the item.
Cut without damaging the pile
Long-pile faux fur
Turn the fabric pile-side down and cut from the backing with the point of sharp scissors or a sharp craft knife. Cut the backing rather than slicing through the hairs, using small cuts where possible. This helps preserve the fur’s length along the cut edge.
Textured and short-pile minky
For textured minky, the Choly Knight minky guide recommends small cuts through the backing to avoid cutting the pile. For short-pile minky, Kullaloo’s minky advice recommends sharp fabric scissors. Because materials vary, test a scrap rather than assuming a rotary cutter or one cutting method will work for every plush.

The Sewing & Craft Alliance suggests at least a 1/2-inch seam allowance if a pattern specifies less, in the context of microfiber plush, to help reduce curled seam edges. Do not alter a pattern automatically: preserve its dimensions when fit or the pattern’s construction depends on them.
Keep layers aligned while sewing
Stretch and a slippery surface can make plush layers creep out of alignment. Test a seam on scraps first, then use the controls that suit your fabric and machine:
- Pin frequently. The Sewing & Craft Alliance suggests pins about every inch, placed perpendicular to the seam.
- Baste the layers if pins alone do not prevent shifting.
- Try a walking foot to help feed the layers evenly; it is an optional aid, not a requirement. Check that it is compatible with your machine.
- If the fabric slips under the presser foot, Choly Knight suggests trying lower presser-foot pressure where your machine allows it.
Choose a needle by fabric and stitch symptoms
Needle recommendations vary by plush type and by guide. For the microfiber plush covered in its guide, the Sewing & Craft Alliance suggests starting with a size 80/12 universal needle and trying a ballpoint if stitches skip. Choly Knight recommends stretch needles for fleece and minky. For faux fur, the American Sewing Guild advises matching needle size to fabric weight and using a universal or ballpoint needle.

- IMPROVED NEEDLE THREADER: Easier than ever to use, the automatic needle threader reliably pushes the thread through the needle. The convenient, jam resistant drop-in top bobbin easy to load and helps ensure your bobbin stays in place

Use the recommendation most relevant to your material, follow your machine’s guidance, and test on scraps. If stitches skip, change one factor at a time—such as needle type—so you can tell whether the adjustment helps.
Manage loose fibers and machine cleanup
Plush can shed fibers as you cut and sew. Shake cut pieces to dislodge loose pile, keep a lint remover nearby, and clean the machine during the project, including the bobbin case. Follow your machine’s cleaning instructions when removing lint.
