A wine bottle citronella “candle” is usually a small outdoor torch, not a candle made with poured wax: torch fuel feeds a wick held at the bottle neck. To make one, clean and dry a sturdy empty bottle, fit a wick through a holder that suits its opening, add outdoor citronella torch fuel without filling the bottle to the neck, then let the wick soak before lighting it outside. The fit varies by bottle, so check the holder before assembling.
What you’ll need
- A clean, empty wine bottle
- A torch wick and a compatible wick holder
- Outdoor citronella torch fuel
- A funnel for pouring fuel
- Optional small stones, gravel, marbles, or beads for ballast
- Thread-seal tape if required by your chosen holder design
Missouri Wines and PBS’s Growing a Greener World both list torch fuel and replacement wick among the project materials; both also identify a funnel as useful. Missouri Wines’ 2025 guide and the PBS demonstration use different holder approaches, so match the wick to the holder and verify that the holder fits your bottle rather than assuming one fitting is universal.

The bottle opening is the key variable. One option is a lid with a hole for the wick, as in the Missouri Wines instructions. Other projects use plumbing fittings: PBS describes a reducing connector, while a separate Missouri Wines guide specifies a 1/2-by-3/8-inch copper reducing coupler. These are examples of designs, not standard sizes guaranteed to fit every wine bottle. Missouri Wines (2025), PBS, and Missouri Wines (2020)
Before adding fuel, test that the holder sits snugly at the neck and keeps the wick upright. If using a threaded fitting, follow the fitting design’s directions for thread-seal tape. Do not force a mismatched part into the opening; use a holder intended for the bottle or choose another bottle.

Assemble and fill the torch
- Clean and dry the bottle. Remove any residue and let the inside dry before adding fuel.
- Add optional ballast. Put a small amount of clean gravel, stones, marbles, or beads in the bottom if you want weight at the base. Keep the bottle stable on a level surface.
- Prepare the wick holder. Pass the wick through the holder according to its design. Check that the wick is held securely and the assembly rests snugly at the neck.
- Remove the holder before filling. Set the wick assembly aside so fuel will not spill or overflow when it is reinstalled.
- Add outdoor torch fuel carefully. Use a funnel and leave enough headroom for the holder; do not fill so high that inserting it pushes fuel out. Follow the fuel container’s own directions for use and handling.
- Reinstall the wick assembly. Seat the holder securely without forcing it. Keep the bottle upright and wipe away any spilled fuel before proceeding.
- Allow the wick to absorb fuel. Hello Glow advises letting it soak for several hours before first lighting. Hello Glow’s instructions
Light and use it safely outdoors
- Use the torch outdoors only. The Gardener explicitly says its open-flame torch is for outdoor use and limits exposed wick height to 2 cm. Follow your holder and fuel instructions as well; do not expose more wick than those directions allow. The Gardener
- Place the bottle on a stable, level surface where people, children, pets, or passing objects cannot knock it over. A tipped torch can spill burning fuel.
- Never leave a lit torch unattended. Keep it away from anything that can catch fire and follow the fuel label’s safety precautions.
- Extinguish it as directed by the torch or fuel instructions. Hello Glow recommends keeping the copper cap on when the torch is not in use; only use a cap or snuffer intended for your holder. Hello Glow
Citronella fuel does not establish a guaranteed mosquito-free area. The cited DIY instructions do not provide a quantified repellency result, so treat the torch as decorative open-flame equipment rather than relying on it as proven mosquito protection.

The holder does not fit
Do not assume a plumbing coupler or lid will fit every bottle. Check dimensions and stability before adding fuel; select another compatible holder or bottle if the assembly is loose or forced into place.

Fuel rises or spills when the holder is inserted
Remove the wick assembly before filling and leave sufficient empty space at the neck. If fuel spills, do not light the torch; clean it up and follow the fuel container’s instructions.
The wick will not stay lit
Make sure the wick is compatible with the holder and has had time to absorb fuel. Wait several hours before the first lighting, as Hello Glow recommends, and follow the wick and fuel product directions.
