Mechanical monster hands for a costume can be made from oversized wooden fingers linked to the wearer’s own fingers with wire. In Nathan Sellers’s project, eye hooks route the wires, elastic bands pull the fingers upright again, and a key ring anchors the wire at the wearer’s end. It is a hand-operated costume prop, not a powered robotic hand.
How the finger mechanism works
Each wooden finger is built from articulated segments. Hooks on the inside of the segments guide a wire; when the wearer moves a real finger, the wire pulls and curls the corresponding costume finger. Elastic bands attached to hooks on the backs of the joints provide the return action, bringing the wooden finger upright when the pull is released.

Sellers placed a hook on either side of each joint on the back of the finger to hold the elastic bands, and a hook toward the top of each segment on the inside to route the wire. He described the inside placement as a way to create leverage. The wire passes through the hooks, attaches at the top hook, and is tied to a key ring at the lower end.
Materials and tools reported for Sellers’s build
- 2×4 and 2×6 lumber; the 2×6 was used for the palm.
- 60 stainless steel eye hooks.
- About 10 feet of picture-hanging wire, called “mirror cord” in the Make: article.
- Elastic bands for returning the fingers upright.
- A key ring to anchor the lower end of the actuation wire.
- A Dremel tool for shaping the fingers.
These are the quantities and materials reported for Sellers’s project, not a complete bill of materials or a universal specification. The Make: article does not establish how much lumber or elastic to buy for another build.

Fit the wire to the wearer
Wire length determines how far the costume fingers curl when the wearer moves their own fingers. Sellers noted that the measurement needs to suit the position of the hand and the desired curl, so treat each wire as a fit-dependent linkage rather than cutting all wires to an assumed standard length. Check the motion with the hand in its intended wearing position and adjust the length until the curl is useful without preventing the return action.
Shape the wooden fingers without sacrificing movement
Sellers began with a basic design and worked out the lengths of the finger segments. He added an extra 1/2 inch to each segment to account for the joint system in his design. That allowance belongs to his construction; the source does not provide enough dimensions to use it as a complete cutting plan.

After assembling the segments, he used a Dremel tool to make the fingers look less blocky and more natural while retaining mobility. This is a balance between appearance and articulation: material removed around a joint can affect how freely the segments move, so preserve clearance where the fingers bend.

Make: published Gareth Branwyn’s account of Sellers’s project on October 17, 2015. It describes the finished hands as large, three-fingered wooden props and includes a brief movement-test video. The article also says Sellers used the arms as part of a 7-foot monster costume. These are descriptions of that project, not independently verified performance results.

The Make: article links to Sellers’s original Instructable, but its step-by-step text is not available in the accessible account. Exact dimensions beyond the quoted segment allowance, a complete construction sequence, a full parts list, and safety guidance therefore cannot be established from that source. Use the described mechanism as a concept, and plan and check your own build rather than treating the reported quantities as instructions for every wearer.
