In Photoshop CS2, the most reliable way to create an animated GIF is to prepare one layer of artwork per frame in Photoshop, then send the layered document to the bundled Adobe ImageReady CS2. In ImageReady, you create animation frames from those layer states, set timing and looping, preview the result, optimize it, and export it with File > Save Optimized As.
This is a period-correct CS2 workflow. Do not follow modern Photoshop instructions such as Window > Timeline or File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) unless you are using a newer Photoshop release.
Before you start
Photoshop CS2 is obsolete software, and its menus are substantially different from current Photoshop. CS2 was bundled with ImageReady CS2, which was the principal tool for web animation and animated GIF creation. Some installations expose animation controls in Photoshop, but ImageReady is the safest route for this version.

#1 Best Overall
Prepare the following:
- A Photoshop CS2 document in RGB Color mode.
- One layer per intended frame, or a layered document whose visibility states represent the frames.
- The same canvas dimensions and alignment for every frame.
- A sensible final size. Resizing before building a large animation is usually less cumbersome.
- A short sequence with redundant frames removed.
- A saved, layered PSD master.
A single flat image cannot become a meaningful animation by itself. You must create additional artwork states or import multiple images.
GIF uses indexed color with a practical limit of 256 colors per frame, so photographs, gradients, and soft transparency may show color loss, banding, or dithering. GIF is generally better for short loops, simple graphics, diagrams, icons, banners, and small demonstrations than for video-like content. Adobe’s CS2-era documentation describes both the 256-color limitation and the use of layer states in animation workflows.
1. Create the frames in Photoshop CS2
For a simple three-frame example, imagine an object moving from left to center to right:
- Create the artwork for the first position on a layer named
Frame 01. - Duplicate or redraw it for the second position on
Frame 02. - Create the third position on
Frame 03.
Keep each frame aligned to the same canvas. If every frame needs the same background, keep that background on a separate shared layer. If the background is part of the changing artwork, include it in each frame’s visibility state.
Save the editable file as a PSD before moving to optimization. The exported GIF is a delivery file, not a convenient source for future editing.
2. Send the document to ImageReady CS2
Use Photoshop CS2’s command or button for transferring the open document to ImageReady. Its location and appearance can vary by platform and installation, so look for the Photoshop-to-ImageReady transfer control rather than a modern Photoshop menu path.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Open the Animation palette
In ImageReady, display the Animation palette from the Window menu if it is hidden. The palette contains the individual animation frames and their playback controls.
Each animation frame records a particular visibility state. The layers provide the artwork; the Animation palette determines which state appears, in what order, and for how long. Having three layers does not by itself guarantee that a three-frame animation has been created.
4. Build the animation
- Set the document to the visibility state for frame 1: show only the artwork that should appear first, along with any permanent background.
- Create the first animation frame if ImageReady has not created it automatically.
- Duplicate the current frame or create a new frame using the Animation palette controls.
- Select the next animation frame and change layer visibility to show the intended artwork for that frame.
- Repeat until every frame has its own visibility state.
Be careful to edit visibility while the correct animation frame is selected. A common mistake is changing the document globally and accidentally making every animation frame identical.
Set frame delays
Click the delay value beneath each frame and choose a duration such as 0.1 sec, 0.2 sec, 0.5 sec, or a longer value. Use shorter delays for rapid movement and longer delays for pauses or instructional labels.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- 0.05–0.1 seconds: fast motion or flashing transitions, although players may round or handle very short delays differently.
- 0.2–0.5 seconds: useful for simple slides, diagrams, and step-by-step demonstrations.
- 1 second or more: deliberate pauses or readable labels.
Always test the saved GIF in a browser or another animated-GIF-capable viewer; playback timing is not perfectly consistent across all players.
Set looping
Choose the looping option in the Animation palette. Select Forever for a continuously repeating GIF, or choose a finite number of repetitions when the animation should stop.
For a smooth loop, make the last frame lead naturally back to the first. You can also duplicate the final or first artwork and give it a longer delay to create a pause. An Adobe CS2-era workflow document describes adding a copy of the first image at the end and assigning it a zero-second display time as an optional loop-smoothing technique; test the result because player behavior can vary.
5. Preview before exporting
Use ImageReady’s playback controls to check:
- Frame order and direction.
- Layer visibility in every frame.
- Delays and pauses.
- Looping behavior.
- Alignment, backgrounds, and cropped edges.
Inspect the optimized preview as well as the original artwork view. ImageReady’s purpose is to let you compare the source and compressed output before saving. Historical ImageReady documentation distinguishes the editable PSD from the optimized output.
6. Optimize and export the animated GIF
Open the Optimize palette if necessary and select GIF as the output format. Adjust the palette, color count, dithering, transparency, matte color, and image dimensions while watching the optimized preview.

When the result looks correct, use:
- File > Save Optimized As.
- Choose Images Only in the output or format selection.
- Choose GIF and save with a
.gifextension.
Do not rely on a normal Photoshop Save As > GIF operation for this CS2 workflow. A normal GIF can contain only one still image. The animation export must contain multiple frames, timing information, and loop metadata. A historical web-production reference also identifies Save Optimized As, Images Only, and GIF as the animated-GIF export path.
After saving, open the actual GIF in a web browser or animated-GIF-capable viewer. Some basic image viewers display only the first frame and can make a valid animation appear static.
Importing existing images as frames
Separate image files
If you have files such as frame01.jpg, frame02.jpg, and frame03.jpg:
Recommended Free Tools
- Create a new Photoshop document at the desired final dimensions.
- Open or copy each image into that document as a separate layer.
- Align every layer to the same canvas.
- Rename the layers in sequence.
- Save the layered PSD and transfer it to ImageReady.
- Create the Animation palette frames from the layer visibility states.
Different image dimensions, color modes, or canvas positions can produce cropping and unwanted movement.
Existing layered PSD
Preserve the layer order, identify whether the bottom layer is a permanent background or part of frame 1, and set the initial visibility state before creating animation frames. Verify that hidden frame layers are not accidentally visible in every frame.

Make the GIF smaller and cleaner
- Reduce dimensions: Smaller width and height are often the most effective way to reduce file size. Check small text and thin lines at the final display size.
- Remove frames: Every additional frame can increase the file size. Delete redundant frames and use longer delays where that communicates the same motion.
- Reduce colors: More colors generally improve appearance but increase size. Fewer colors can cause banding or posterization.
- Choose dithering carefully: Dithering can make gradients look smoother, but it may add visible texture or noise. Flat logos and line art often need little or none.
- Handle transparency deliberately: Anti-aliased edges prepared against white can produce a pale halo on a dark webpage. Use a matte color close to the intended background, or avoid semi-transparent edge pixels when crisp transparency matters.
- Compare optimized output: Do not judge quality only from the full-color source document. Inspect the optimized preview and the saved file.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The exported GIF is static | Only one animation frame exists, all frames are identical, or the wrong export command was used. | Reopen the PSD in ImageReady, verify multiple frames and different visibility states, then use File > Save Optimized As, Images Only, and GIF. Test in a browser. |
| All frames look identical | Layer visibility was not changed separately for each selected animation frame. | Select each frame in the Animation palette and set its visibility state. Keep a fixed background shared where appropriate. |
| The animation plays backward | The animation frames are in reverse order. | Reverse or manually reorder the frames in the Animation palette, then preview again. |
| The animation jumps | Layers have different dimensions or positions, a background is missing, or optimization is involved. | Standardize canvas dimensions and alignment, ensure required backgrounds are visible, and test a less aggressively optimized export. |
| The file is too large | Excessive dimensions, colors, frame count, or repeated pauses. | Reduce dimensions first, then remove unnecessary frames, reduce colors, test dithering, and shorten redundant pauses. |
| Transparent edges have a halo | The exported matte color does not match the display background. | Use a matching matte color, avoid unsuitable anti-aliased edges, and test against light and dark backgrounds. |
| ImageReady is missing | The CS2 installation is incomplete, modified, or unable to run on the operating system; alternatively, the application may not be CS2. | Check the original authorized CS2 installation components. Do not expect a current Photoshop installation to recreate ImageReady, and consider a separate modern or free alternative if the legacy software cannot run. |
If Photoshop CS2 exposes the Animation palette directly
Some CS2 installations or documentation describe an Animation palette associated with Photoshop/ImageReady workflows. If yours provides it in Photoshop, you can use this variation:
- Open the layered PSD in Photoshop CS2.
- Show the Animation palette through the Window menu.
- Create or duplicate frames.
- Set layer visibility for each frame.
- Set delays and the loop count.
- Use the available transfer, optimization, or File > Save for Web command, depending on the installation.
- Select GIF and save the optimized output.
Because controls differ between installations, ImageReady remains the more dependable period-specific path.

Modern Photoshop uses the Timeline panel and may offer commands such as Create Frame Animation, Make Frames From Layers, and newer export interfaces. Adobe’s current tutorial documents that workflow, but it should not be substituted for the CS2/ImageReady instructions above. See Adobe’s current animated-GIF tutorial only if you are using a newer release.
Alternatives when ImageReady will not run
If preserving the CS2 interface is not essential, choose an alternative based on the job:
Quick Recap
- Current Adobe Photoshop: a supported Adobe workflow with modern Timeline tools. Official Photoshop page.
- Photopea: a browser-based layered-image editor that may suit users who cannot run legacy software, although it does not reproduce ImageReady exactly. Photopea.
- GIMP: free, open-source desktop raster software with a different animated-GIF workflow. GIMP.
- Adobe Express: a browser-based, template-oriented option for simple content, with less frame-by-frame control. Adobe Express.
