You can make a printer-free edible picture on a cake in two main ways: paint brushworked artwork directly onto the cake with buttercream and food coloring, or trace a design in buttercream on waxed paper, freeze it, then transfer it to the cake. Choose painting for a freehand look and a frozen buttercream transfer when you want to follow a template.

Choose the method that fits your design
| Method | Best suited to | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Buttercream painting | Visible brushwork and artwork made directly on the cake | Apply buttercream and food coloring to paint the design on the cake. King Arthur Baking’s guide describes this approach. |
| Frozen buttercream transfer | A line drawing or template-defined image you want to move onto the cake as one piece | Trace and fill the design in buttercream on waxed paper, freeze it, then place it on the cake. Wilton’s instructions describe the method. |
These are practical differences in how the picture is made, not a measured comparison of speed, difficulty, or final quality. Both methods are described for cakes and buttercream; the instructions should not be assumed to apply unchanged to other foods or frostings.

A transfer lets you trace artwork away from the cake, then move the finished buttercream picture onto its surface. Wilton’s instructions use a pattern under waxed paper on a stable work surface, tinted buttercream, and freezing before the transfer is moved.

- Prepare the pattern. Secure a design beneath a sheet of waxed paper on a stable work surface. If the design contains words, reverse the lettering on the pattern: the transfer will be turned onto the cake, so mirrored lettering on the working side will read correctly after placement.
- Tint the buttercream. Color buttercream with food coloring. Use food-decorating color rather than craft pigment or ordinary paint.
- Trace and fill the design. Pipe or apply colored buttercream over the pattern on the waxed paper. Work through the outlines and filled areas to build the image.
- Freeze before moving it. Wilton recommends buttercream that firms adequately in the freezer; its instructions discuss a recipe made with both shortening and butter. That is guidance for its method, not a guarantee that every buttercream recipe will firm or transfer identically.
- Place it on the cake. Once frozen, move the buttercream image onto the cake and turn it so the design faces outward.
This is traced buttercream artwork, not a photographic printing process. For Wilton’s complete illustrated directions, see How to Make a Buttercream Transfer.
Paint directly on the cake with buttercream
For a brushworked picture, paint directly on the cake surface using buttercream and food coloring. King Arthur Baking’s tutorial covers this approach and lists food coloring among its supplies. Use coloring intended for food, and choose a brush intended for food contact rather than assuming an ordinary art brush is suitable.

Because the artwork is applied directly to the cake, this method does not involve tracing and freezing a separate image. It is a natural choice when you want the visible character of brushwork rather than a template-traced picture.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a template or stencil thoughtfully
A paper pattern can guide a buttercream transfer. Stencils are another related cake-decorating option: the Colorado 4-H cake-decorating manual includes stencil placement and frozen buttercream transfer in its training material. Its available description does not establish a full stencil procedure or specify a suitable stencil material, so follow directions for the particular stencil and decorating medium you use instead of assuming every stencil is food-safe or suited to direct contact with cake.

Keep every decoration food-safe
Use food coloring and decorating products labeled for food use. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns bakers not to use glitter or dust on food unless it was manufactured as edible, and advises checking the label and ingredient list. The FDA says, “If the label simply says ‘non-toxic’ or ‘for decorative purposes only’ and does not include an ingredients list, the product should not be used directly on foods.” Read the FDA guidance on decorative products used on food.
Useful supplies depend on the method: food coloring for either approach; for transfers, waxed paper and tools for applying colored buttercream; for painting, a food-contact-safe decorating brush. A paper design can help with tracing, while bags and decorating tips may help apply buttercream. Check that any tool or decoration that touches the cake is appropriate for food use.
