An “infinite” Instagram carousel is not literally endless. It is a finite post whose artwork flows continuously from one slide to the next, creating a seamless swipe effect. The most reliable Canva method is to design one wide image, divide it into equal Instagram-sized frames, and upload those frames in order.

For a five-slide portrait carousel, create a 5400 × 1350 px Canva design, place guides at every 1080 pixels, export the finished artwork, and crop it into five separate images.

What an infinite Instagram carousel really is

Instagram carousel posts contain a finite number of photos or videos. “Infinite carousel” is a creative term for a design that looks continuous as the viewer swipes left; it does not add unlimited slides or create a true looping feed post. Instagram’s official help documentation describes a carousel as one post containing multiple photos or videos and currently indexed guidance says it can contain up to 10 items. Because platform limits and interfaces can change, check the limit in Instagram immediately before publishing.

• Standard carousel: Each slide is designed independently.
• Seamless carousel: A photo, illustration, background, line, or text treatment continues across slide boundaries.
• Looped carousel: The final slide is designed to visually connect back to the first.
• True infinite carousel: Not available as a normal Instagram feed post.

What you need before starting

• A Canva account. Canva Free can handle the basic workflow.
• An Instagram account and access to the app or website for uploading.
• A slide count, preferably three to five for a first attempt.
• A consistent frame size: portrait or square.
• Your photographs, illustrations, logo, fonts, colors, and copy.
• A way to crop the finished wide image into equal sections.

Plan the sequence before opening Canva. A simple five-slide structure might be:

1. Slide 1: Hook or headline.
2. Slide 2: Continuation or context.
3. Slide 3: Main visual or teaching point.
4. Slide 4: Supporting detail.
5. Slide 5: Conclusion or call to action.

Choose the carousel size

Use one identical frame size for every slide. A practical working specification is 1080 × 1350 pixels for portrait posts or 1080 × 1080 pixels for square posts. These are production dimensions, not permanent Instagram requirements. Instagram’s accepted aspect ratios, cropping behavior, compression, and profile-grid presentation can change.

Use this formula:

Total width = frame width × number of slides
Total height = frame height

Examples for portrait slides:

3 slides: 3240 × 1350 px

5 slides: 5400 × 1350 px
6 slides: 6480 × 1350 px

Portrait designs occupy more vertical space in the feed and suit educational content, but require careful previewing. Square designs are simpler and more forgiving. Neither format guarantees better reach.

The most accurate method: one wide Canva canvas

1. Calculate the canvas

For the worked example, use five portrait slides:

Slides: 5
Each frame: 1080 × 1350 px
Total canvas: 5400 × 1350 px

2. Create a custom Canva design

1. In Canva, select Create a design.
2. Choose Custom size.
3. Enter 5400 for width and 1350 for height, using pixels.
4. Select Create new design.

Labels vary between Canva’s web, desktop, and mobile interfaces. If you do not see the exact options, search Canva for Instagram Post, Instagram Carousel, or Custom size. Canva documents custom dimensions and image export options including JPG and PNG on its Instagram post page.

3. Mark the slide boundaries

For this five-slide design, the frame boundaries are:

0 px | 1080 px | 2160 px | 3240 px | 4320 px | 5400 px

Canva does not expose a persistent pixel ruler or dedicated slicing tool in every account and interface. Use temporary vertical lines, rectangles, or a guide-based grid to mark the 1080-pixel intervals. Label the sections temporarily if that helps you work.

Duplicate the design before adding guides so you retain a clean master. Remove every guide, label, border, and crop mark before exporting.

4. Design across the full width

Build the composition as one uninterrupted image:

1. Place the background first.
2. Add panoramic photographs, illustrations, textures, curves, ribbons, arrows, or oversized typography.
3. Allow at least one strong visual element to cross two or more frame boundaries.
4. Keep essential text, faces, products, and logos away from cut lines.
5. Make sure each frame has enough contrast and visual balance when viewed alone.

A seamless effect should support the content rather than obscure it. A letter or face split exactly at a boundary often looks accidental, while a road, wave, line, or decorative object can cross a boundary naturally.

5. Inspect every frame independently

Before exporting, examine each 1080-pixel section as if it were a standalone Instagram image. Check that:

• The first slide makes sense as a feed thumbnail.
• Text remains readable on every frame.
• Faces, products, and logos are not awkwardly cut.
• Edges align with the next frame.
• The final slide has a useful conclusion or call to action.
• No temporary guides or labels remain.

Worked example: five portrait slides

Suppose you are creating a five-slide painting tutorial with a brushstroke continuing across the entire composition.

• Canvas: 5400 × 1350 px
• Frame 1: pixels 0–1079
• Frame 2: pixels 1080–2159
• Frame 3: pixels 2160–3239
• Frame 4: pixels 3240–4319
• Frame 5: pixels 4320–5399

The brushstroke may cross all five sections, but the title and first instructional point should remain inside the first frame. After export, crop the master image into five 1080 × 1350 files.

Split the wide design into individual Instagram images

This is the step many Canva tutorials omit. Exporting one wide PNG does not make Instagram interpret it as multiple carousel slides. You must create separate image files.

Method A: Export once, then crop

1. Download the clean wide Canva design as PNG or JPG.
2. Open it in an image editor or image-splitting tool.
3. Crop equal sections using exact widths: 1080 px per frame.
4. For the portrait example, keep every crop at 1080 × 1350 px.
5. Save the files with zero-padded numbers:

6. View the files side by side in sequence before uploading.

This method gives the best continuity because every frame comes from one uninterrupted master composition. Avoid resizing the wide image before splitting it, and use a crop process that preserves exact pixel boundaries.

Method B: Duplicate and crop inside Canva

1. Keep the wide design as your master.
2. Duplicate it once for each slide.
3. Resize or crop each duplicate to the individual frame size.
4. Reposition the wide artwork until the correct section is visible.
5. Export each page separately and name the files numerically.

This can be useful when you want a Canva-only process, but manually repositioning the artwork can introduce small gaps or shifts. Use Method A when exact alignment matters.

Method C: Build separate Canva pages from the start

Create one 1080 × 1350 or 1080 × 1080 page, duplicate it for every slide, and manually align shared objects across the pages. Separate pages are convenient when each slide is mostly independent or when the project includes different media types. They are less convenient for a panoramic photograph or illustration that must cross several boundaries.

Canva’s export documentation explains that JPG and PNG are not multi-page image formats. A multi-page JPG or PNG export may instead arrive as separate files in a ZIP. Choose PNG or JPG

• PNG: Usually preferable for small text, flat colors, icons, lines, and crisp graphic edges.
• JPG: Useful for photographic designs when a smaller file size matters and transparency is unnecessary.

PNG is not guaranteed to look better after Instagram resizes or recompresses the upload. Export at the intended dimensions, avoid repeated saving, and compare the original files with Instagram’s preview.

Upload the carousel to Instagram

1. Open Instagram and start a new post.
2. Choose the multiple-selection option.
3. Select the numbered files in order, beginning with 01-cover.
4. Confirm the sequence.
5. Choose and check the crop and preview.
6. Add your caption, tags, location, and other settings.
7. Review the post one final time, then share it.

Instagram’s official help page says the selected orientation affects the whole carousel, so do not mix portrait and square frames. It also says photos and videos can be reordered before publishing, but individual carousel items cannot be individually reordered, edited, or deleted after the post is live. Check especially that:

• Slide one is actually first.
• Every file has the same dimensions and aspect ratio.
• The preview has not cropped important content.
• The seams still align after Instagram’s preview crop.
• No image was selected in reverse order.

Make the last slide connect to the first

A looped-looking carousel requires planning the beginning and ending together. You can:

• Continue a road, wave, ribbon, line, or brushstroke from the last frame toward the first.
• Use matching colors at both ends.
• Repeat a motif on the first and last slides.
• Use a circular composition whose edges mentally wrap around.
• Place a partial object at the end that leads naturally into the opening frame.

Do not sacrifice usability for the loop. Slide one still needs a clear hook, and the final slide should still provide a conclusion, instruction, or call to action.

Can a carousel contain video?

Yes. Instagram supports carousels containing photos and videos, but a video-based seamless carousel is more difficult. Thumbnails may display differently, uploads can take longer, and a moving object may not align at the exact moment a viewer swipes. Canva lists formats such as MOV, GIF, MP4, MPEG, MKV, and WEBM on its Instagram creator page, with file specifications subject to change.

For a first attempt, use still images. If you add video, make every frame use the same ratio, create consistent video thumbnails, and test the complete upload before publishing.

Common problems and fixes

The slides do not line up

Cause: Unequal crop widths or resizing before splitting.

Fix: Return to the original wide export and crop every frame at exact 1080-pixel intervals.

The upload is reversed or out of order

Cause: Gallery, download, or ZIP sorting by date or filename.

Fix: Use zero-padded names such as 01, 02, and 03, then verify the order in Instagram’s selection screen.

Instagram crops the design

Cause: Mixed aspect ratios, an incorrect orientation choice, or important content too close to an edge.

Fix: Make every frame identical, keep key information inside a safe area, and inspect the preview before posting.

Text is split across a boundary

Cause: Essential copy was placed on a cut line.

Fix: Keep instructions and headlines within one frame. Reserve boundary-crossing elements for decorative artwork.

Guides appear in the exported files

Cause: Temporary lines, labels, or rectangles were not removed.

Fix: Maintain a clean master design and export only after hiding or deleting alignment aids.

The images look blurry

Possible causes: A reduced-scale Canva download, a low-resolution source image, repeated recompression, or Instagram processing.

Fix: Export at the intended dimensions, use high-resolution source material, avoid repeated saves, and compare the original export with Instagram’s preview.

Canva is slow or the file is too large

Reduce the slide count, remove unused videos and duplicated elements, use JPG for photo-heavy designs, and avoid unnecessarily oversized source assets. Three to five slides is a practical starting point; five to seven may be useful for a panoramic image or teaching sequence. Stay within Instagram’s current in-app carousel limit.

A Canva element has a watermark

That usually means the design contains premium content unavailable under the current account or plan. Replace it with free content, license the asset through Canva if offered, or use an eligible plan. Do not remove a watermark by unauthorized means. A stock asset is being reused incorrectly

Canva’s license permits use in social-media designs but generally does not permit distributing or reselling Pro content as a standalone asset. Publish the finished design rather than extracting and selling individual stock elements. Review the current Canva Content License Agreement for commercial use.

Do you need Canva Pro?

No. Canva Free can be enough for a basic seamless carousel if you use free elements, create a custom canvas, export the artwork, and crop it accurately.

Pro may be useful for premium assets, Magic Resize, background removal, brand tools, and scheduling, but it does not remove the need to split a wide master image. Final pre-publishing checklist

• All frames use the same dimensions and orientation.
• The wide canvas width equals frame width multiplied by slide count.
• Crops are equal and preserve the original pixel dimensions.
• Files are numbered with zero-padded names.
• Slide one works as a standalone hook.
• Text, faces, products, and logos are not awkwardly split.
• Guides and labels have been removed.
• The sequence and crop look correct in Instagram’s preview.
• The final slide has a useful conclusion or CTA.
• Any Canva stock content is used under the applicable license.
