To insert a picture in AutoCAD, use IMAGEATTACH, choose the JPG, PNG, TIFF, or other supported raster file, then set its insertion point, scale, rotation, and path. AutoCAD normally attaches the picture as an external reference rather than embedding the image inside the DWG, so the image file must remain accessible whenever the drawing is opened or shared.

This guide explains how to attach, scale, position, crop, fade, plot, and package an image reliably in AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, including the important differences between a visual reference and a dimensionally accurate plan.

Before you attach the picture

Save the DWG before adding the image, and place the image in a project folder rather than a temporary downloads folder or personal desktop location. Decide what the image is for:

  • Visual reference: a photograph, logo, screenshot, or image used for context.
  • Tracing: a scanned plan or sketch that will guide new CAD geometry.
  • Accurate drawing work: an image that must align to known dimensions or coordinates.

A normal photograph or scan does not automatically have a reliable real-world scale. You need at least one known dimension or control distance to scale it accurately. Georeferenced imagery, raster cleanup, and raster-to-vector conversion may require the AutoCAD Raster Design toolset or a specialized mapping workflow.

How to insert a picture with IMAGEATTACH

  1. Open the drawing and type IMAGEATTACH at the command line. Press Enter.
  2. Browse to the JPG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, or other image file and select it.
  3. In the Attach Image dialog box, choose how to specify the Insertion Point, Scale, and Rotation.
  4. Choose a Path Type. For a portable project folder, a relative path is usually the most practical option.
  5. Click OK.
  6. If any values were set to Specify On-Screen, pick the point and enter the requested scale or angle at the command line.
  7. Use ZOOM and the Extents option if the image is not visible in the current view.

The attachment dialog can show the image preview, pixel dimensions, resolution, image size in drawing units, found path, and saved path. Autodesk documents IMAGEATTACH as the command for inserting a reference to an image file; see the official IMAGEATTACH documentation.

Using the command line

If the ribbon or menu is different in your edition, use the command-line form:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
-IMAGEATTACH

The core prompts are:

  1. Enter the image file name.
  2. Specify the insertion point.
  3. Specify the scale factor.
  4. Specify the rotation angle.

Autodesk’s -IMAGEATTACH reference notes that the lower-left corner is used as the image insertion point and that a scale factor of 0.5 displays the image at half its initial size.

Using the menu or ribbon

Menu names vary by platform and workspace. In AutoCAD LT for Mac, Autodesk lists Insert > Raster Image Reference as an access method. If you cannot find the menu item, typing IMAGEATTACH is the most reliable method across supported desktop editions.

Drag-and-drop may also work in some editions, but its prompts and behavior can differ between Windows, Mac, and web environments. Treat it as a convenience, not the primary workflow.

Choose the correct image path

Because the raster file remains external, path management determines whether other people can see the image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Path type How it works Best use
Absolute path Points to a complete drive or network location. A fixed office location that will not move.
Relative path Stores the image location relative to the DWG folder. Projects that will be moved or shared as a folder.
No path Looks for the image in the same folder as the DWG. A simple package containing both files together.

A relative path is not a guarantee against every network, permission, or operating-system problem. The recipient must still have access to the folder, and the image filename and folder structure must remain consistent. Autodesk explains that raster images are linked through a path name and are not actually part of the drawing file.

How to scale an inserted image accurately

Do not assume that scale factor 1 means the image is at true size. AutoCAD’s initial size can depend on drawing units, INSUNITS, and resolution metadata stored in the image. If the image has no dependable resolution information, its initial size may be based on its pixel width in AutoCAD units.

Example: scale a scanned plan using a known wall

Suppose a scanned floor plan contains a wall that should measure 20 feet:

  1. Attach the image at a convenient initial size.
  2. Draw a temporary CAD line representing the known 20-foot wall, or identify two points in the drawing that define that distance.
  3. Measure the corresponding wall in the image with DIST or a temporary line.
  4. Run SCALE, select the image, choose a base point, and select the Reference option.
  5. Specify the image’s measured wall length, then enter 20 as the new length if the drawing is in feet.
  6. Check another known feature with DIST or the Properties palette.

You can also use ALIGN when you have known points. With two corresponding points, an alignment can establish location, rotation, and scale in many workflows. A single point controls location only; it cannot establish orientation or scale.

This produces metric accuracy only if the reference dimension is trustworthy and the source is not distorted. A perspective photograph is not an orthographic plan. A photograph taken at an angle may need rectification before it can serve as an accurate plan or elevation, while a skewed scan may need correction before tracing.

Move, rotate, and manage the image

Select the image to use grips, or open the Properties palette to edit common placement and appearance values. Depending on the AutoCAD edition, you may be able to change its position, scale, rotation, clipping, brightness, contrast, fade, and transparency there.

  • Position: enter precise X, Y, and Z values when the image must be placed at a known location.
  • Rotation: enter a numeric angle or rotate it against temporary construction geometry.
  • Layer: place reference images on a clearly named layer such as REF-IMAGE, so visibility and plotting can be controlled independently.
  • Locking: lock the image layer after alignment to prevent accidental movement while drafting.

Crop or clip the picture

Use CLIP to control which part of the image is displayed. Clipping does not edit the original JPG, PNG, or TIFF; it creates or changes a boundary in the DWG.

  1. Type CLIP and press Enter.
  2. Select the image.
  3. Choose New boundary.
  4. Choose a rectangular or polygonal boundary if those options are offered.
  5. Pick the boundary points and press Enter.

Run CLIP again to edit, invert, or remove the boundary. Each image insertion can have its own clipping boundary. The full source file may still be referenced, so clipping is not necessarily a way to reduce the image file size.

  • Pen holder can rotate open and store small items that are easily lost, such as pen tips

Adjust brightness, contrast, fade, and transparency

Image appearance controls are useful when the picture competes with CAD geometry:

  • Brightness: helps reveal faint scan lines or make a photograph less dominant.
  • Contrast: can improve legibility, but excessive contrast may erase subtle information.
  • Fade: makes the image recede behind newly drawn lines.
  • Transparency: helps when overlaying the image, but too much can make details difficult to inspect.
  • Monochrome or grayscale display: may help with tracing, but does not change the source file.

Commands such as IMAGEADJUST, IMAGEFRAME, and IMAGE are available in editions that support them, although the exact interface can vary. The Properties palette and contextual image controls may provide the same settings.

Use IMAGEFRAME to control whether the image boundary is visible and whether it can appear in plotted output. Keep the frame visible while editing; hide or configure it appropriately for the final drawing. Always check both model-space display and plot preview.

Why the image disappears after you send the DWG

The most common cause is sending only the DWG. Since IMAGEATTACH creates a linked reference, the recipient also needs the referenced image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a missing image

  1. Open the drawing’s external-reference or reference-management interface.
  2. Find the missing image entry.
  3. Browse to the correct image file.
  4. Reload the reference or reopen the drawing.
  5. Save the DWG after correcting the path.
  6. Deliver the DWG and image together, preserving the folder structure used by the path.

The exact palette label can differ by AutoCAD edition. If the image was renamed, moved, stored on an unavailable drive, or placed on a network requiring credentials, correcting the path alone may not be enough until access is restored.

When the image is visible but does not print

Check the following in order:

  1. Confirm that the image layer is turned on, thawed, and configured to plot.
  2. Check whether the image is clipped outside the layout or plotted area.
  3. Review IMAGEFRAME and frame-related settings.
  4. Use plot preview to see whether the image is actually included.
  5. Test a simple PDF output.
  6. Check the image’s brightness, contrast, and fade; an image that looks acceptable on screen may print too dark or too faint.
  7. If the PDF works but the physical plot does not, investigate the plotter or driver’s handling of raster content.

Common problems and practical fixes

The image is too large or too small

Check the drawing units, INSUNITS, image resolution metadata, and insertion scale. Measure a known feature and correct the image with SCALE using Reference, or with ALIGN. Verify the result with DIST.

The image is blurry

AutoCAD cannot restore detail that is absent from the source. A low-resolution screenshot enlarged for a large-format drawing will remain soft. Use the highest practical source resolution, avoid repeated recompression, and use vector PDF or DWG content when precise linework is required. Display acceleration or zoom level can also affect perceived sharpness, so compare the source and plotted output before replacing the file.

The drawing became slow

Large raster files, several high-resolution references, repeated copies of one image, complex clipping boundaries, and slow network storage can all affect performance. Resize or compress the source outside AutoCAD, attach only the necessary reference, use a lower-resolution working copy for tracing, and keep presentation photography separate from production drawings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image cannot be selected

Turn on the image frame, unlock or isolate its layer, and check whether other geometry is covering it. Selection cycling or other selection settings may also interfere. The reference-management interface can help locate an image that is difficult to pick directly.

Image attachment versus other AutoCAD options

Need Recommended option Important qualification
Photograph, logo, screenshot, or ordinary scanned image Raster image reference with IMAGEATTACH The source remains an external linked file.
Scanned plan for visual tracing Raster image reference Scale must be established from a known dimension.
Issued drawing or multi-page document PDF underlay PDF pages are attached as references; they are not native editable DWG geometry and cannot simply be bound.
Editable lines, arcs, and blocks Native CAD, vector import, or a conversion workflow An attached raster image does not become editable geometry.
Georeferenced imagery, raster cleanup, or raster-to-vector work Raster Design toolset or specialized mapping workflow Basic image attachment may not provide the required correlation and editing tools.
Self-contained office-style object OLE, when specifically required Compatibility, plotting, file size, and cross-platform behavior can be less predictable.

PDF underlays are especially useful for issued sheets and manufacturer documents. Autodesk notes that PDF underlays are linked references, can be clipped, and cannot be edited like native drawing content. Use Autodesk’s PDF underlay documentation for edition-specific behavior.

AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and Raster Design

The basic IMAGEATTACH workflow is documented for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, but menu placement and image-management controls can vary between Windows, Mac, LT, web, and specialized toolsets. Autodesk states that full AutoCAD includes seven specialized toolsets, including Raster Design, while AutoCAD LT focuses on 2D drafting and does not include those specialized toolsets. Check the official feature comparison for the edition and region you use.

You do not need full AutoCAD or Raster Design merely to attach a logo, photograph, screenshot, or scanned reference. Full AutoCAD is more relevant when you need 3D, broader automation, or specialized toolsets. Raster Design is the more appropriate choice when the work involves serious raster editing, correlation, cleanup, or conversion. Current availability and pricing vary by region and date; consult Autodesk’s AutoCAD buying page or AutoCAD LT page rather than relying on an old price.

Final pre-delivery check

  • Is the image visible and correctly clipped?
  • Have you verified its scale with a known dimension?
  • Are its position and rotation correct?
  • Is the image on the intended layer?
  • Is the frame configured correctly for editing and plotting?
  • Does the plot preview show the desired brightness and contrast?
  • Does the image path resolve from the delivery folder?
  • Have you sent the image file with the DWG?
