A button-and-string closure can turn a plain envelope into a reusable-looking, decorative package. Make: introduced a project featuring two ways to add one, but its October 17, 2014 article is only an introduction—not the full instructions. It credits Erica Loesing for the tutorial on Design*Sponge, whose page is unavailable in the consulted sources. So the exact steps and materials for either method cannot be confirmed here.
What the two techniques are meant to do
Make: describes adding a button-and-string closure to a plain envelope and points readers to Erica Loesing’s Design*Sponge tutorial for the two techniques. Its introduction does not explain how those techniques differ or provide their assembly steps. The available description is in Make:’s article by Haley Pierson-Cox, published October 17, 2014.
Commercial button-and-string envelopes show the basic closure concept: string wraps around two buttons to hold the envelope shut. Xiamen Huake Printing Industry describes that mechanism for its recycled kraft envelope, but this product description is not a DIY tutorial and does not establish the method used in Loesing’s two techniques.
What you may need to plan a project
A plain envelope is the documented starting point. Buttons or discs and string are plausible components suggested by the closure’s name and commercial example, but the available tutorial introduction does not confirm a definitive supply list. No specific button size, string type, adhesive, cutting tool, paper weight, or assembly sequence is established.

Choose an envelope that fits what you intend to put inside and whose paper and flap suit your project. Huake lists several envelope sizes, including C3, C4, C5, C6, and DL, along with custom sizing and different paper choices; those are product options, not required dimensions or materials for this craft. Its recycled kraft envelope listing can help illustrate the commercial format, but it does not specify a DIY template.

The two-button wrap is a visible way to hold an envelope closed, but the cited product description does not establish how secure or durable a handmade version would be. A decorative tie should not be treated as proof that an envelope meets postal requirements or protects sensitive contents. Check the requirements of the intended carrier and add appropriate protection or packaging when needed.

For a faithful version of either of the two named techniques, the original Design*Sponge instructions would be needed; the accessible Make: introduction does not contain enough detail to reproduce them reliably.
