To make ASCII words, type a word or short phrase into a text-to-ASCII or FIGlet-style banner generator, choose a lettering style, then copy or download the result. Paste it into a monospace area and preserve its spaces and line breaks so the letters stay aligned.

Make a text banner in four steps

  1. Enter your text. Open a text-to-ASCII or FIGlet-style generator and type the word or short phrase you want to display. These tools turn ordinary text into larger character-based lettering.
  2. Choose a style. Try the available designs—for example, Standard, Slant, Big, Block, or Script. Compare how each looks at the size and width where you plan to use it; the listed options are not evidence of controlled readability tests.
  3. Copy or download the output. Use the generator’s copy control or select and copy the rendered text. Some tools also let you download the result as a text file.
  4. Paste and check it in place. Keep all spaces and line breaks intact. Preview the banner in its destination, particularly if the text is long or the display area is narrow.

Keep the letters aligned after pasting

ASCII banners rely on columns of ordinary characters lining up. A proportional font, trimmed spaces, or changed line breaks can make the design look broken. A monospace font gives each character the same width, making it easier to preserve the layout. For a GitHub README, place the banner inside a fenced code block so the spacing is preserved.

Wide designs may wrap or require horizontal scrolling on narrow screens. If the banner does not fit, shorten the text or try a more compact style, then preview the new version where it will appear.

What is a FIGlet font?

FIGlet is a longstanding approach to drawing large letters with ordinary characters. A FIGlet font is a .flf file that defines how those characters are drawn. Some browser generators say they parse these font files to render text; how closely a particular tool matches original FIGlet output depends on that tool.

ASCII banner art is not an ASCII code converter

A banner generator changes the visual presentation of a word using rows of text characters. An ASCII character-value converter does a different job: it maps characters to numeric codes. If you want block lettering you can paste into a message or README, use a text-to-banner generator rather than a letters-to-numbers converter.
