To make a scented candle, choose a wax and candle-safe vessel, use fragrance intended for candle making, and follow the wax supplier’s instructions for fragrance load, temperatures, wick, and cure. Weigh the materials, center the wick, and test the finished candle through its burns before relying on it or giving it away.
There is no universal fragrance percentage, wick size, pour temperature, or cure time: wax, fragrance, wick, dye, and vessel work together. For a first project, keep the formula simple and change one variable at a time when testing.

What you need to make a scented candle
Gather these supplies before heating wax:
- Candle wax: Choose wax intended for container candles and read its current processing and fragrance-load guidance.
- Candle-formulated fragrance: Choose a fragrance specified for candle making and check its documentation.
- Heat-safe candle vessel: Use a vessel designed for candle use, not an unverified household glass or decorative container.
- Wick: Select one using guidance for your wax and vessel, then test the complete formula.
- Digital scale and thermometer: Weigh materials and monitor the wax as you work.
- Pouring pot: Use a suitable vessel for melting and pouring wax.
- Wick adhesive and centering tool: Secure the wick at the center and keep it upright while the candle sets.
A beginner candle-making kit can simplify shopping, but its components are only a starting combination. Follow the suppliers’ instructions and test the finished candle.

Step 1: Choose the wax and vessel first
A small container candle is a manageable first project. Choose a wax intended for container candles and a vessel designed for candle use. Ask the wax supplier for its maximum fragrance load, melting and fragrance-addition instructions, pouring guidance, wick recommendations, and curing advice.
Waxes differ in their fragrance capacity, processing requirements, appearance, and scent character. The National Candle Association describes wax choice as a formulation decision: its overview notes, for example, that paraffin is valued for scent holding and throw, beeswax can contribute a subtle honey note, and gel wax can be transparent. These are general descriptions, not guarantees for every product or blend. Choose based on supplier guidance and test results.
Step 2: Select a scent made for candles
Fragrance oils: a practical starting point
Choose a fragrance oil that its supplier specifies for candle making. Check the current product documentation and the chosen wax’s fragrance-load limit; a pleasant smell from the bottle does not establish how it will smell or perform in a burning candle.
You can start with one fragrance or make a small custom blend. Record the components and ratios, then test the blend in the wax and vessel you plan to use. Compare both cold throw, the aroma of an unlit candle, and hot throw, the aroma while it burns.
Essential oils require product-specific guidance
Do not assume an essential oil is suitable for candles simply because it is natural or smells pleasant. Use a specific oil only when its supplier documents its candle application, and follow the relevant product and wax guidance. Test its scent and burn performance in the complete formula.
Step 3: Measure fragrance by weight
Weigh the wax and fragrance rather than estimating by volume. Follow the wax supplier’s stated fragrance-load basis and maximum; the research does not establish a percentage suitable for all waxes. More fragrance is not automatically better, and exceeding a product’s limit can compromise the formula.

Record the weight of each ingredient so you can reproduce and compare test batches. If you want to evaluate a different load, make it a separate test formula within the supplier’s guidance.
Step 4: Prepare the wick and container
- Make sure the candle vessel is clean, dry, and intended for candle use.
- Attach the wick at the center of the vessel’s base.
- Use a centering tool to hold the wick upright while the wax sets.
- Choose the wick using supplier guidance for the wax and vessel, then verify it by testing the complete candle.
Wick choice is not independent of the other ingredients. As the National Candle Association notes in its Science Projects guidance, “Every element of a candle — size, shape, wick, wax, fragrance, dye, etc. — impacts its burning behavior.”
Step 5: Melt the wax safely
Use a suitable pouring pot and a controlled heating setup, with a thermometer. Follow the wax supplier’s instructions for melting and keep the work area away from children, pets, and combustibles. Never leave heating wax unattended.
Step 6: Add and mix the fragrance
Follow the wax supplier’s current instructions for when and how to add fragrance. CandleScience generally recommends adding fragrance at 180–190°F (82–88°C) for most fragrances and waxes, but this is supplier guidance, not a universal recipe; check the instructions for your chosen wax. CandleScience also notes that pouring temperature depends on the specific wax.
Mix as directed by the product supplier, then record the temperature and process so you can repeat the test. Do not substitute a temperature from another wax’s instructions.
Step 7: Pour and let the candle set
Pour according to the wax supplier’s instructions, keeping the wick centered. Place the vessel on a level, heat-resistant surface and let the candle cool undisturbed. Use the supplier’s curing recommendation; there is no single cure duration established for all waxes and formulas.

Step 8: Cure and test the complete candle
Test the finished formula from its first burn through later burns before relying on its performance or gifting or selling it. CandleScience’s How To Conduct a Basic Burn Test guidance emphasizes that wax, fragrance, fragrance load, dye, wick, and container dimensions all affect burn behavior.
Use a draft-free area and a heat-resistant surface for testing, and never leave a burning candle unattended. Record:
- Wax and fragrance, including fragrance load
- Wick, vessel dimensions, and any dye
- Processing details and cure time
- Flame behavior, soot, burn rate, and melt pool
- Scent while unlit and while burning
- Any concerns about the vessel
Change one variable at a time. If you change a component, treat it as a new formula and test it again.

| Problem | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weak scent while burning | Whether the fragrance is intended for candles; wax instructions and load; cure recommendation; and wick and vessel combination | Check supplier guidance and test the complete formula. Do not exceed the wax’s fragrance limit simply to increase scent. |
| Uneven burning or tunneling | Wick selection, vessel, drafts, and the full formula | Check the supplier’s wick guidance, remove drafts as a testing variable, and test a changed formula through its burns. |
| Smoke or soot | Wick length, drafts, debris, and wick suitability | Follow the maker’s directions, check the wick and surroundings, and retest any changed formula. |
| Scent changes when lit | Fragrance choice and the interaction of fragrance, wax, wick, and vessel | Compare cold and hot throw and verify the fragrance’s candle-use documentation. |
Safe burning practices
A candle has an open flame. Keep it within sight and away from combustibles, children, and drafts; use a stable, heat-resistant surface and follow the maker’s directions. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep the melt pool clear of debris.
The National Candle Association recommends trimming the wick to ¼ inch before use. Its consumer guidance also advises generally not burning a candle for longer than four hours at a time.

There are two sensible ways to assemble supplies:
- Buy a beginner candle-making kit if you want a bundled starting point. Check that it includes candle-use fragrance, wax, a suitable wick and vessel, and clear instructions. Do not assume the combination works with every formula; test it.
- Buy components separately if you want to choose the wax, fragrance, vessel, and wick system yourself. Useful categories include container candle wax, candle wicks, and candle vessels. Compatibility and testing matter more than selecting components by scent strength alone.
A digital scale for candle making, thermometer, and pouring pot help you follow supplier instructions consistently. A starter kit or individual supplies are both reasonable options; neither replaces testing the complete candle.

FAQ
Can I use any scented oil or perfume in a candle?
No. Use fragrance whose supplier specifies it for candle making, and follow the wax supplier’s load and process instructions. Do not assume perfume or an unverified scented oil is suitable.
What is the best fragrance percentage for a homemade candle?
There is no universal percentage. Follow the maximum and load basis specified for your wax, and test the complete formula.
How hot should wax be when I add fragrance?
CandleScience generally recommends 180–190°F (82–88°C) for most fragrances and waxes, but that is supplier guidance rather than a universal rule. Check the current instructions for your selected wax.
Why does my candle smell stronger when cold than when lit?
Cold and hot throw differ, and performance depends on fragrance, wax, load, wick, vessel, and cure. Check supplier guidance and test the complete formula, changing one variable at a time.
How long should I cure a candle?
Use the cure recommendation for your specific wax and formula. The research does not establish one duration that applies to every candle.
The Bottom Line
Making a scented candle is a small formulation experiment: wax, fragrance, load, wick, and vessel work together. Follow the chosen suppliers’ instructions, weigh materials, let the candle cure as recommended, and test the complete formula through its burns before relying on it or giving it away.
