Make fan art by turning your idea into a finished illustration in stages: choose a subject, work from references, sketch the composition, refine the forms, add color or value, and review the result before sharing. You can draw on paper or digitally; the best medium is the one you can use comfortably. Making the picture and having permission to adapt or publish a protected character are separate questions.
How to make fan art in 10 steps
1. Choose a subject and an idea
Pick a character or fictional world, then decide what you want your picture to express. You might show a favorite moment, invent a pose, try a costume variation, or place the character in a scene of your own. A specific idea gives the drawing direction before you get caught up in details.
2. Gather references thoughtfully
Use official images to study details such as clothing, colors, facial features, and proportions. References can help you understand what makes a character recognizable, but avoid tracing or reproducing another artist’s fan art without permission. Build your own pose and composition rather than copying a finished image line for line.

Use paper and pencils if you enjoy drawing by hand, or a drawing application and stylus if you prefer working digitally. Consider what you have access to, how easily you want to revise the picture, and whether you want a physical original or a digital file. Neither medium is required: the U.S. Copyright Office recognizes painting and digital art as forms of visual art that can be fixed.

4. Make small thumbnails
Draw a few quick, small versions of the composition. Test different poses, viewpoints, and placements before committing to a larger drawing. Make sure the subject reads clearly and leave room for any background elements you want to include.
5. Block in the big shapes
Sketch the gesture, proportions, pose, and major forms lightly. Focus on the overall silhouette and how the parts relate to one another; small details can wait. If the pose or proportions feel off at this stage, it is easier to adjust them before refining.

6. Refine the drawing
Clarify anatomy, expression, clothing, and distinctive features. Use your references to check character details while making your own choices about the composition and presentation. Keep the original idea in view so the result feels like your interpretation, not a close copy of one reference image.

7. Clean up lines or forms
For traditional work, erase construction marks and strengthen the lines you want to keep. Digitally, you can use separate sketch and line layers if that fits your process. Choose whichever method lets you see the finished forms clearly.

8. Add values or color
Establish light and shadow, then choose a palette that supports the mood of the scene. Check that important shapes remain readable and that the subject stands out from the background. Viewing the work at a reduced size can reveal whether the contrast is strong enough.
9. Finish and review
Inspect proportions, edges, stray marks, and the background. Save a working copy so you retain the version you can continue editing. If you made the art digitally, export a shareable image from the editable source file.

10. Share with care
If you post the illustration, credit the franchise as context and identify what you created. Check the relevant rights-holder and platform policies before sharing. A credit line does not replace permission, and whether a particular use is lawful depends on its facts.

Under U.S. copyright law, original visual art can receive protection when it is fixed in a tangible form. The U.S. Copyright Office says, “Copyright protection exists from the moment you make visual art,” and gives painting and digital art as examples of fixation. An artist generally owns copyright in their original contribution, subject to exceptions such as work made for hire and contracts. The Copyright Office’s guidance for visual and graphic artists explains these principles.

That protection for your own creative contribution does not settle whether you may use a character or artwork owned by someone else. Copyright owners have rights that include making copies, preparing adaptations, distributing copies, and publicly displaying protected work. Using another person’s protected work in those ways generally requires permission unless an exception or limitation applies. See the Copyright Office’s copyright overview.
Fair use is not a simple test based on whether a picture is personal, noncommercial, credited, or drawn in a different style. U.S. law calls for case-specific consideration of four factors: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality used, and the effect on the potential market. The factors are set out in 17 U.S.C. §107; no single shortcut guarantees that a fan work is fair use.
Copyright protection does not require registration, though the Copyright Office describes additional legal benefits from registration. This legal overview is U.S.-specific. Other countries have different rights and exceptions, and rights-holder fan-content policies and platform terms can vary.
