Hammered leaf and flower prints are made by pounding fresh plant material against paper or fabric so its pigment transfers to the surface. Use a firm, protected work area, begin with gentle taps, and test unfamiliar plants on a scrap first. The method works on both paper and fabric, but the results vary by plant and may fade over time.
Choose paper or fabric for your print
Pick the surface based on what you want to make and how it will be used. Paper is a practical choice for cards, framed art, and experimenting with different plants. Fabric can be used for projects such as tote bags, bunting, pillowcases, and handkerchiefs, but printed fabric may fade with washing.
| Surface | Useful for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | Cards, framed prints, and trials | Plain paper is demonstrated by the Natural History Museum; a craft guide suggests heavyweight watercolor paper. These are options, not a tested ranking. Natural History Museum; Mud & Bloom |
| Cotton or linen fabric | Tote bags, bunting, pillowcases, and handkerchiefs | The Royal Horticultural Society recommends supporting fabric on a large wooden board or thick cardboard, then drying and ironing it after printing. RHS |
Gather materials and prepare a safe work area
- Fresh leaves and flowers. Thin material is generally easier to transfer than thick material.
- A medium mallet, rubber mallet, or household hammer.
- A firm board or other protected work surface.
- Paper towels, protective paper, wax paper, or folded fabric to protect the work and cover the plant material.
- For paper, tape can help keep botanicals flat and still. Use plain, unprinted towels if a pattern could mark the print.
For a children’s activity, an adult should supervise whenever hammers or mallets are in use; safety goggles are also recommended. Keep fingers clear of the plant area while hammering.

Select fresh botanicals and test them first
Fresh, thinner leaves and newer blooms are useful starting points. The RHS suggests flowers including cosmos, lavender, marigold, salvia, nasturtium, geranium, zinnia, nigella, verbena, and poppy, and leaves including geranium, lemon balm, chamomile, honeysuckle, cosmos, and maple. UF/IFAS Extension Orange County also suggests violas or pansies, impatiens, coleus, ferns, and dianthus. Darker-colored flowers often produce more vivid impressions, but the pigment and plant juice vary by species, season, and rainfall.
Make a small test print on scrap paper or fabric before arranging a finished composition. A thick flower may need more pounding than a thin leaf, and one plant’s result does not reliably predict another’s.

How to make a print on paper
- Set a firm board on a stable work surface. Put protective paper or a towel on the board, then place your print paper on top.
- Arrange one leaf or flower on the paper. For a more secure setup, tape the plant flat to plain, moistened paper as in the Natural History Museum’s method; flip the paper so the tape side faces the board.
- Cover the botanicals with a paper towel or another protective layer. If using the museum method, keep the plant area facing the board while you hammer.
- Start with gentle taps and gradually increase force, working across the whole leaf or flower. Avoid striking your fingers. Adjust the amount of moisture if the paper tears or the plant falls apart.
- Lift the layers and inspect the transfer. If plant scraps stick, let them dry before brushing them away.
If you are making a multi-leaf composition, print leaves one at a time so each transfer can be checked before you move on.
How to make a print on fabric
- Lay cotton or linen on a large wooden board or thick cardboard.
- Arrange fresh flowers and leaves on the fabric. Cover them with another piece of fabric, or fold the working fabric over the arrangement.
- Pound the covered botanicals until their pigment transfers. Work across each plant rather than concentrating all the force in one spot.
- Leave the fabric to dry for at least 24 hours. Once dry, shake off loose plant matter.
- Iron the print to finish it and enhance the color. Use a heat setting appropriate for the fabric and avoid scorching it.
Drying, ironing, and how long prints last
Ironing is a finishing or heat-setting step, not a guarantee that a print will be permanent or wash-fast. The USDA Forest Service advises ironing each section for 45 to 60 seconds at a setting suitable for the fabric, taking care not to scorch it. The RHS recommends drying fabric for at least 24 hours before shaking away dry plant matter and ironing. Follow the guidance for your chosen material and test a small sample first.

Paper prints can fade with time. Printed fabric may also fade when washed, particularly in hot water, so a framed or displayed piece is a better choice than an item expected to withstand frequent laundering. Exact durability is not established, and results vary with the plant and process.
