Sinterklaas is a Dutch folk figure and winter celebration associated with Saint Nicholas. In the Netherlands, the main gift-giving evening is December 5; in Belgium, the feast is commonly observed on December 6, with gifts often discovered that morning. Traditions vary by family and region, and the familiar story has changed over time.
When is Sinterklaas celebrated?
The dates differ across the two countries. In the Netherlands, December 5 is the main gift-giving evening, called pakjesavond or Sinterklaasavond. In Belgium, December 6 is the feast day; children commonly find gifts on the morning after the night of December 5 to 6. The historical feast day of Saint Nicholas is December 6, and the older Dutch pattern was to put out shoes on December 5 and open gifts the next morning, as the Rijksmuseum explains.
| Place | Common timing | Typical gift moment |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | December 5 | Gifts are exchanged on pakjesavond. |
| Belgium | December 6 feast day | Gifts are often found in the morning after December 5. |
These are broad patterns, not rules for every household. Arrival events also depend on the town and year. For example, Sint in Amsterdam describes its local arrival as a mid-November event; its page’s 2024 date is historical, not a standing annual schedule.

What happens when children put out their shoes?
In the run-up to the feast, children may leave a shoe where Sinterklaas can find it. They might add a drawing, letter, or wish list, and sometimes leave something for the horse. In Flemish heritage accounts, that offering can include a carrot, turnip, and sugar lumps; Sint in Amsterdam mentions a carrot or apple and water. These details belong to the story and vary by family.
Children may sing Sinterklaas songs and later find sweets or a small present in or near the shoe. How often shoes are set out and what goes inside them are household choices, not a fixed ritual followed everywhere.

How do pakjesavond and Sinterklaas treats work?
Dutch pakjesavond can center on a sack or delivery of presents, along with poems written for recipients and handmade surprises. In some families, a poem is read before its related gift is opened. Treats associated with the celebration include pepernoten or kruidnoten, chocolate letters and figures, marzipan, speculaas, mandarins, chocolate coins, and hot chocolate. Which foods appear depends on local and family custom.
How do customs vary within the Netherlands and Belgium?
There is no single household script. Families differ in when children may set out shoes, whether the evening includes poems or handmade surprises, and which foods they serve. Regional practice matters too: the Flemish heritage register notes that Sint-Maarten, around November 11, is prominent near Ieper and Aalst, where Sinterklaas may be less prominent or not observed.

That regional variation is one reason not to treat “Dutch” or “Belgian” practice as uniform. The national dates describe common patterns; they do not establish how every town or family celebrates.
Who is Sinterklaas, and what is history versus folklore?
Sinterklaas is the Dutch folk figure associated with Saint Nicholas, whose historical identity is linked to Myra, in what is now Turkey. The gift-bringing character and the customs around him developed over centuries; they are not an unchanged ancient ceremony.

The NPO Kennis history reports a reference to shoe-setting at Utrecht’s Sint Nicolaaskerk in 1427, where gifts of money were associated with the poor before the custom moved into homes. During the Reformation, efforts to suppress veneration of saints did not end the celebration: it persisted in private. After 1800, the celebration was officially permitted again and many elements of the familiar modern festival developed.
Amsterdam City Archives says the city became Protestant in 1578 and authorities tried to end the Catholic feast, but the celebration continued as the figure shifted toward a generous gift-giver. The archive reports that the writer Bredero described shoe gifts in 1617, including figs, nuts, cakes, a spinning top, writing materials, a slate, and books. A Sinterklaas market on Dam Square continued until 1836. Amsterdam’s annual steamboat visit began in 1934, according to the city archive.

How did the modern portrayal of Piet change?
The familiar modern Sinterklaas story includes Piet, but the figure’s origins are not settled. NPO Kennis links the emergence of the recognizable modern Sinterklaas to teacher Jan Schenkman’s 1850 picture book, which included an early depiction of a black assistant. Portrayals of Piet have changed and have been publicly debated, including criticism of stereotyping and racist appearance. It is more accurate to describe this as a changing tradition than to present any one depiction as timeless or as having a simple, definitively established origin.
