You can make simple photo or artwork magnets at home by printing an image, attaching it to adhesive magnetic sheet, and trimming it to shape. This low-equipment method is a practical starting point for testing a small product idea; it does not require a press or specialized printer. Before selling, check the finished magnets, work out your actual costs, and make sure your listing and product meet the rules that apply to you.
1. Choose a simple magnet to start with
Flat magnets made from a printed photo, illustration, or reproduction of your own painting are relatively straightforward to assemble. They also let you make a small batch without investing in specialized equipment. A painted landscape, color study, or small abstract design can become a printed magnet, but the image should be clear and legible at the final size.

There is no evidence here that one magnet style sells better than another. Start with a design you can reproduce consistently, then use customer response to decide whether to expand your range.
2. Gather materials
For the basic method, set out:
- A printed photo or design, such as a scan or photograph of your original artwork.
- Adhesive magnetic sheet material intended for craft use.
- Scissors or a suitable cutter for trimming.
- Optional laminate or another image-protection layer, if it suits the materials you choose.
Search for adhesive magnetic sheets for crafts and check the actual product details before buying. Compare the sheet dimensions, adhesive construction, and compatibility with your chosen image method. Product listings show that this type of material is marketed for craft projects, but they do not establish a particular sheet’s holding strength, durability, or suitability for every use.

A separate magnet attached to a printed image, or a laminated-photo approach, is another option described in a DIY photo-magnet guide. These alternatives may change the assembly process and finish; the available information does not establish that one is better or cheaper. You do not need a press, sublimation printer, resin, or specialized kit for the adhesive-sheet method.

3. Prepare and print the image
Decide the finished magnet dimensions before arranging the artwork. Crop the image to the shape you want, leave enough room for trimming, and print a test copy if you are unsure how the colors or small details will appear at that size. These are practical preparation tips, not print-setting specifications from the source material: choose settings appropriate to your printer and paper.

If you are reproducing a painting, photograph it or scan it in even light, then review the image for glare, cropping, and color shifts before printing. Keep the original artwork’s proportions in mind so the design does not look unintentionally stretched.
4. Attach the image and trim the magnet
- Cut out the printed image, allowing a small margin if your design needs one.
- Peel back the magnetic sheet’s adhesive liner as directed by its manufacturer.
- Align the image carefully, then press it onto the adhesive surface to reduce wrinkles or trapped air.
- Trim the assembled piece to the final shape with scissors or a suitable cutter.
- If you are using an optional protective layer, follow its instructions and check that it does not interfere with the finished item.
The craft method is simple in outline, but the result depends on the particular paper, adhesive, magnetic material, and cutting tools. Follow the material makers’ directions rather than assuming all sheets or finishes behave alike.

5. Check the finished item
Before offering a magnet for sale, inspect it as a product rather than relying on appearance alone. Check that the image is aligned, the edges are neat, and the image stays attached during ordinary handling. Try the magnet on the kind of surface you expect a buyer to use and confirm that it holds as intended. This is a sensible quality-control check, not a reported performance test for any particular magnetic sheet.
- Look for lifting corners, bubbles, loose layers, or sharp and uneven edges.
- Check that the printed image looks acceptable at the finished size.
- Package a sample as you plan to ship it and see whether the packaging protects it from bending or scuffing.
6. Calculate costs and create a compliant listing
Work out your own price
There is no established universal selling price, profit margin, or demand figure for handmade magnets. Calculate your costs for the actual product and sales channel instead. Include the materials used per item, packaging, your assembly time, shipping costs you cover, and marketplace charges. Then decide what price makes sense for your work and test how buyers respond; a calculation cannot guarantee sales.

Build the listing accurately
Etsy’s listing setup asks sellers for item details, photos or video, category, price, quantity, and shipping and processing information. Use clear photographs of the finished magnet, state its dimensions and materials accurately, and set a processing time you can meet. Etsy says listed items must fit its seller rules: they must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller, and mass-produced resale is not allowed in the handmade category. Review the current policies for the category and product you plan to list.

Etsy says it does not require its sellers to have a business license, but sellers remain responsible for laws that apply to their business. That statement is specific to Etsy and does not determine what another marketplace or your local rules require.

Safety and rules depend on the product
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission states: “The CPSC published a final rule in the Federal Register (87 FR 57756) that establishes a mandatory safety standard for magnets: Safety Standard for Magnets (16 CFR part 1262).” The rule applies to defined subject magnet products, not automatically to every decorative refrigerator magnet. Scope depends on the product’s design and intended use.
For a qualifying loose or separable magnet in a covered subject magnet product that fits entirely within a small-parts cylinder, the 2022 standard specifies a flux-index limit of less than 50 kG² mm². That is a scoped compliance requirement, not a general performance target for all craft magnets. If you plan to sell in the United States, assess whether your particular product falls within the rule and what testing, certification, or other obligations apply. For sales in the EEA or Northern Ireland, Etsy’s listing guidance notes that traders may need manufacturer and safety information under GPSR; check current official guidance for your situation.
