To make a symmetrical paper snowflake, start with a square sheet, fold it into a six-section wedge, cut small shapes from the edges, and unfold it slowly. The classic method takes about 10–15 minutes for one snowflake, including preparation, according to BBC Good Food and Kids Activities Blog. The two details that matter most are aligning the thirds-fold and leaving bridges of paper so the snowflake does not fall apart.

What you need

  • One square sheet of lightweight paper, or a rectangular sheet that you can trim into a square
  • Scissors
  • A pencil, optional, for drawing cut lines
  • A ruler, optional, for sharper creases
  • A flat work surface

For a first attempt, ordinary printer paper is the best compromise: it is easy to fold, easy to cut through several layers, inexpensive, and sturdy enough to display. Use thinner paper for very detailed designs and cardstock when durability matters more than easy cutting.

If children are participating, use age-appropriate blunt-tip scissors where appropriate and supervise any child using scissors. The Natural History Museum and DIY.org both recommend adult supervision and adapting the complexity of the cuts to the child’s fine-motor skills.

Choose the right paper

Paper Advantages Limitations Best use
Standard printer paper Easy to find, fold, and cut May wrinkle or tear if heavily cut Best default for beginners
Lightweight wrapping paper Colorful and easy to cut Fragile and less crisp Temporary decorations
Tissue or crepe paper Very easy to cut and often translucent Tears easily Layered window displays
Cardstock or poster paper Sturdy and suitable for reuse Harder to fold and cut through all the layers Large hanging snowflakes
Coffee filter Already round, inexpensive, and thin Can be floppy and less sharply creased Child-friendly experiments and colorful flakes

This is a trade-off rather than a single best-paper rule. Thin printer paper is favored for easy cutting, while heavier paper is useful when a more durable decoration is wanted.

How to make a six-pointed paper snowflake

  1. Make a square

Start with US Letter paper, which is 8.5 × 11 inches, or A4 paper, which is commonly used in many other countries. Fold one corner diagonally across the sheet until one short edge lines up exactly with an adjacent long edge. Crease the diagonal, then cut away the leftover rectangular strip. The remaining piece should be a square.

For the easiest first attempt, use an 8.5-inch square or make one by trimming US Letter paper. NASA’s printable Webb mirror snowflake activity also supports an 8.5 × 11-inch sheet or an 8.5 × 8.5-inch square.

  2. Fold the square diagonally

Bring one corner of the square to the opposite corner to make a large triangle. Match the corners carefully before pressing the crease. A sharp, accurate first crease makes every later fold easier.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  3. Fold the triangle in half

Fold the triangle in half again so its pointed corners meet. Press the new crease firmly with a finger or the smooth edge of a ruler. You now have a smaller wedge-shaped triangle.

  4. Fold the triangle into thirds

This is the step that creates the sixfold arrangement, so do not rush it. Place the smaller triangle with its point toward you or pointing away from you, and keep the orientation consistent while you work.

    1. Fold one long side inward toward the center so the wedge is divided approximately into thirds.
    2. Turn the paper over.
    3. Fold the opposite side across the first flap. Adjust the fold before creasing so the exposed edges line up and the result is balanced.

The finished shape should look like a narrow triangular wedge with a pointed end and a wider end. It should not look like a long rectangle or have one flap sticking noticeably farther out than the other.

Stage What the folded paper should look like What to check
Triangle before the thirds-fold A small, layered triangle or wedge The long sides are clearly visible
After the first side folds inward One flap lies toward the center Do not make the final crease yet
After turning the paper over The opposite flap is ready to cross the first Keep the center point in the same place
Finished six-section wedge A narrow, balanced triangular wedge The two sides overlap evenly and the broad end is a clean stack of layers
Think of this final wedge as one sector of the finished snowflake. Its center point will become the middle of the snowflake, while its wide end will become part of the outside edge.

Sources describe this operation in slightly different ways and may count the folds differently. The important result is the approximate 60-degree wedge, not the number used in the instructions. The British Council guide describes the 60-degree geometry, while Martha Stewart and BBC Good Food show the practical overlapping-fold method.

    • Superior quality, reliability, and dependability for high-volume printing at home, at school and in the office; HP Copy&Print20 print and copy paper prevents yellowing over time to ensure a long-lasting appearance for added archival quality
  5. Trim the folded wedge

The wide end may have uneven points, flaps, or small “rabbit ears.” Cut straight across that wide end to make a clean triangular wedge before adding decorative cuts. This controls the outer silhouette and prevents a rectangular-looking snowflake.

You may trim the narrow point slightly if you want a small opening in the center. Remove only a little paper; cutting off too much can weaken the center.

  6. Plan a simple pattern

Use a pencil to mark cut lines on the folded wedge, or cut freehand. Start with large shapes rather than tiny details. Triangles create crisp crystalline points, half-circles create scallops, diamonds create geometric openings, and narrow slits suggest branches.

Cut the smallest interior details first and the largest outside sections last. Once large pieces have been removed, the folded paper becomes floppy and harder to control. This conservative approach is also recommended by the Natural History Museum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Cut without severing the wedge

Use small, deliberate snips along the long edges and wide end. Every cut will be repeated through the layers, so one small cut can create six matching openings when the paper is unfolded.

Never cut completely across the folded wedge, and never remove an entire folded edge. Leave paper bridges between the center and the outside rim. If a cut joins one long edge to the opposite edge, the snowflake can separate into pieces.

  8. Unfold slowly

Open the snowflake one layer at a time, starting from the outside. Do not pull quickly on the center or force stuck layers apart. The repeated creases and cut edges make the paper fragile, especially if you used tissue paper or made many narrow cuts. Both BBC Good Food and Kids Activities Blog recommend unfolding carefully.

Display paper snowflakes with small pieces of double-sided tape on a window, clear string or fishing line from a ceiling, or as part of a garland, gift decoration, mobile, or layered wreath. HGTV also recommends pressing finished flakes flat under a heavy book.

Where to cut on the folded wedge

Cut into the edges to make openings, but leave a continuous framework of paper. The diagram is a guide to orientation rather than a required pattern.
Part of the wedge Good choice Important rule
Long folded edges Small V-notches, half-circles, diamonds, and short branch cuts Cut into the edge, but do not cut all the way from one side to the other
Wide end Large notches or a clean trim that shapes the outside Leave enough paper near the center so the six arms remain connected
Inside the wedge Diamonds, small triangles, and short slits Keep openings separated by visible strips of paper
Narrow point A tiny snip for a center hole Optional; do not remove a large section

Three starter designs

  • Beginner: Cut two or three large triangles from each long edge and one or two notches from the wide end.
  • Intermediate: Combine triangles with half-circles and diamonds. Alternate the shapes instead of packing them closely together.
  • Advanced: Add narrow branch-like slits and vary the outside silhouette, but retain several bridges between the center and edge.

Because the paper is folded, you do not have to draw six identical arms. The folding creates the repetition automatically. This is why the craft is best described as folded paper cutting rather than conventional fold-only origami.

How to design your own snowflake pattern

  1. Draw only on the folded wedge, not on the unfolded sheet.
  2. Begin with triangles, diamonds, and half-circles that are large enough for your scissors to follow comfortably.
  3. Leave a continuous outer rim or several strong bridges between the center and the edge.
  4. Keep neighboring cuts separated if the remaining paper looks thin.
  5. Cut internal details first and large silhouette cuts last.
  6. If making an animal or character snowflake, simplify it into a few recognizable shapes instead of attempting every detail.

Coloring the areas to be removed with pencil can make a design easier to follow. The Natural History Museum’s animal snowflake guidance uses this approach and emphasizes that excess cutting can cause the design to collapse.

Fix common paper-snowflake problems

Problem Likely cause Fix
The arms are uneven The two thirds-folds were not aligned before creasing Refold a fresh sheet. Fold one side, turn the paper over, and adjust both flaps until the broad end forms an even stack before pressing the creases. A ruler or paper guide can help.
The snowflake looks rectangular The folded wedge was not trimmed, or its wide end was cut unevenly Before decorating, trim the wide end into a clean triangle. On the next attempt, shape the outside edge with deliberate notches rather than leaving the original flap ends.
The snowflake falls apart A cut went all the way across the wedge, or too much surrounding paper was removed Reinforce the back with tiny pieces of transparent tape or glue, accepting that the repair may show. If a section has separated cleanly, use the pieces in a garland or layered decoration. Next time, leave bridges and never remove an entire folded edge.
The paper tears while unfolding The paper is too thick, the cuts are too close together, or the layers were opened too quickly Use standard printer paper, make fewer and larger cuts, leave more paper between openings, and unfold from the outside inward very slowly.
The folded paper is too thick to cut Cardstock or too many folds have created too many layers Switch to thinner paper or use fewer folds. Coffee-filter activities commonly limit the folding to three or four folds because extra layers become difficult to cut.
The cuts are too difficult for a child The paper is small, thick, or filled with tiny details Use a larger sheet, thin printer paper, or a coffee filter. Choose blunt-tip scissors and large triangles or half-circles. An adult can pre-fold the wedge, draw the pattern, and handle the final trimming and unfolding.
The result has four or eight points instead of six The paper was divided by halves only rather than arranged into six radial sectors That design is still a valid folded-paper decoration. For the classic six-pointed form, refold a square using the additional thirds-fold so the wedge represents approximately 60 degrees.

The National Science Teaching Association guide explains the connection between the angular division and the number of points: six-pointed designs use approximately 60-degree spacing, while other divisions produce different results.

Easy alternatives

Use a paper circle

A circle is an excellent alternative for young children or anyone who does not want to trim a rectangle into a square. The circle already has the correct outside shape, so there is no separate square-making step.

  5. Unfold slowly to reveal a six-pointed snow crystal.

Mass Audubon’s activity page uses this simplified circle-based method and provides downloadable templates.

Make a coffee-filter snowflake

Coffee filters are round, thin, and forgiving for simple designs. For a colorful version:

  1. Flatten a white coffee filter.
  2. Color it with washable markers.
  3. Lightly wet the filter to blend the colors, then let it dry completely before folding.
  4. Fold it in half, fold the semicircle into thirds, and fold once more if the layers are still easy to cut.
  5. Cut simple shapes from the edges. Do not cut through the opposite side.
  6. Unfold carefully.

The Whatcom Museum activity sheet demonstrates the marker-and-water method. The Museum of the Cape Fear recommends three or four folds and warns that extra layers become difficult to cut.

Use a printable template

Templates are useful when you need a particular motif or want a less experimental project, but the folding and cutting principles remain the same.

  1. Print the template at its intended scale rather than letting the printer automatically enlarge or shrink it.
  2. Fold the paper into the six-section wedge first.
  3. Trace the design onto the folded paper, or attach the template with staples or removable tape.
  4. Cut only the marked areas and keep the structural bridges intact.
  5. Remove the template before unfolding.

NASA’s Webb-themed printable is designed for either US Letter paper or an 8.5 × 8.5-inch square. Martha Stewart also describes scaling a printable design to the paper and attaching it to the folded layers.

Why paper snowflakes have six points

The paper craft imitates a common feature of natural ice crystals: sixfold radial symmetry. That means a pattern repeats around a central point in six sectors. As water freezes, ice crystals commonly develop a hexagonal molecular structure, and growth proceeds from six related crystal facets. Changing temperature and moisture as a crystal falls can create branches and intricate detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Real snowflakes are not all perfect six-armed stars. Some are irregular, some are lopsided, and some are aggregates made from multiple ice crystals that have collided and stuck together. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration explains the relationship between crystal growth, branching, temperature, and moisture, while the UCAR Center for Science Education describes single crystals, aggregates, and irregular flakes. The American Chemical Society presents the six-branched form as a useful classroom model.

So the familiar saying that no two snowflakes are alike should not be treated as a guarantee that every flake looks visibly unique. Natural flakes can look similar, and the paper version is intentionally repeated and symmetrical.

Safety and cleanup

  • Use scissors that match the child’s age and cutting ability; an adult should supervise sharp scissors.
  • Work on a flat, uncluttered surface and keep fingers behind the cutting path.
  • Do not give tiny cut-paper pieces, beads, or other loose decorations to children who may put objects in their mouths.
  • Keep spray starch and an iron away from unsupervised children. Let colored coffee filters dry fully before folding.
  • Save the trimmed paper strips for confetti, collage work, gift tags, or another paper project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my paper snowflake come out with eight points instead of six?

The paper was probably divided by halves only. A classic six-pointed snowflake needs the additional thirds-fold, which arranges the folded paper into approximately 60-degree sectors. Refold a fresh square and align the overlapping flaps before creasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make a paper snowflake from A4 or US Letter paper?

Yes. Both are rectangular, so first fold one corner across the sheet, crease the diagonal, and trim away the leftover strip to make a square. US Letter paper produces an 8.5-inch square; A4 produces a square based on its shorter side.

Is a paper snowflake an origami project?

It combines paper folding with paper cutting. It is often grouped with origami crafts, but it is not a conventional fold-only origami model.

Do real snowflakes always have six perfect arms?

No. Many individual ice crystals show sixfold symmetry because of ice’s hexagonal structure, but natural snowflakes can be irregular, lopsided, or made from several fused crystals.

The Bottom Line

For the most reliable result, use thin printer paper, make a square, align the thirds-fold carefully, trim the wedge before decorating, and leave paper bridges between every cut. Start with large triangles and half-circles; once the basic six-pointed shape works, experiment with branches, diamonds, colored filters, and templates.
