Patchwork coasters are a practical way to use fabric scraps: piece or fold cotton into a decorative top, add batting and backing, then stitch and finish the edges. Choose a simple pieced top for a straightforward first project, folded patchwork for a layered look, or a stained-glass design if you want to add bias tape and more detailed fabric placement.

Choose a patchwork method

Method How the top is made Typical finish Best fit
Pieced top Sew small fabric shapes together, then layer the top with batting and backing. Sew around the layers, turn through an opening, and close it. A basic scrap-fabric project.
Folded patchwork Fold fabric squares and arrange them over a fabric-and-batting base. Stitch around the perimeter, turn right side out, and press. A layered design without piecing every shape into a seam.
Stained-glass design Position fabric shapes with bias strips between them. Quilt the layers and bind the edge. A more detailed design with a defined, bound finish.

These are construction options, not tested performance rankings. Quilting is a finishing choice, not a requirement for every coaster.

Gather fabric and supplies

For a simple set, start with cotton scraps for the tops, coordinating cotton for backing, quilting batting, and thread. A small pieced project may also use fusible web to hold shapes in position while sewing. Keep fabric and batting scraps from other projects in mind before buying new materials.

  • For pieced or folded coasters: cotton scraps, backing fabric, batting, and sewing thread.
  • For stained-glass patchwork: assorted cotton, a cotton base and backing, batting, thread, bias tape, and fusible web.
  • Optional tools: a rotary cutter can help cut shapes; bias tape makers and a mini iron are useful for the stained-glass method, but are not necessary for a basic coaster.

One tutorial author reports that an old towel felt more absorbent than cotton batting, while batting gave a smoother surface. That is the author’s project experience, not a comparative test; choose an interlining based on the material and finish you want.

Make a simple pieced-top coaster

This approach joins fabric pieces into a top, then encloses batting and backing in a stitched sandwich. One published tutorial makes a set of four coasters from three rectangles per top, using scrap fabric, batting, and Steam-a-Seam; its piece sizes and layout belong to that particular pattern, not to all patchwork coasters. See the Quilting in the Rain coaster set tutorial.

  1. Cut and sew small fabric pieces into a top. Arrange scraps before sewing so the colors and prints work together.
  2. Layer the patchwork top, batting, and backing. Align the edges and pin or baste the layers as appropriate for your materials.
  3. Sew around the perimeter, leaving an opening large enough to turn the coaster.
  4. Trim bulky corners without cutting the stitching, turn the coaster right side out, and press the edges flat.
  5. Close the opening with stitching. Add quilting through the layers if you want additional stitched detail.

Try folded patchwork

For a folded effect, place folded fabric squares over a fabric-and-batting base rather than piecing all the visible shapes into a flat top. A published Simply Sewing/Gathered project specifies a 1 cm seam allowance unless its instructions say otherwise. Use that allowance for that pattern; other designs may specify a different measurement. Follow the folded patchwork coaster project.

  1. Cut the fabric squares and prepare the base from fabric and batting, following the chosen pattern’s dimensions.
  2. Fold the squares and arrange them on the base, overlapping them to create the patchwork surface.
  3. Stitch around the perimeter to secure the layers, leaving an opening for turning if the pattern uses a turned edge.
  4. Clip the corners carefully, turn the coaster right side out, and press it.

Make a stained-glass coaster with binding

This design uses bias tape to outline fabric shapes and give the surface a stained-glass appearance. It takes more placement and pressing than a basic pieced top. Clover’s project uses assorted cotton fabric, a cotton base and backing, batting, thread, bias tape, and fusible web. See Clover’s stained-glass coaster project.

  1. Cut the fabric shapes and arrange them on the base before attaching anything, checking that the planned bias strips can separate the sections.
  2. Use fusible web and bias strips as directed in the pattern to secure and outline the shapes.
  3. Layer the top with batting and backing, then quilt through the layers.
  4. Bind the perimeter with bias tape for a finished edge.

Decide whether to quilt the layers

Quilting adds stitching through the coaster top, batting, and backing. It can be done by machine or by hand; Janome describes a quilt sandwich with hand quilting as an option. If you prefer a simpler finish, a turned edge can enclose the layers without quilting across the surface. See Janome’s four-patch coaster project.

Set expectations for everyday use

These project instructions explain how to construct coasters, but they do not establish standardized performance for hot mugs, condensation, absorbency, or furniture protection. Do not treat a fabric coaster as a tested heat barrier, waterproof mat, or guaranteed surface protector. If protecting a surface from heat or moisture is essential, use a product with performance information suited to that need.
