One leftover quilt block can become a pouch, pillow, potholder, mini quilt or clothing accent; a group of blocks can form a tote, table runner, sampler or donation quilt. Choose a project that suits the blocks’ size, number, condition and intended use, rather than treating an unused block as unusable.

Before cutting or joining anything, check how many blocks you have, their finished or unfinished dimensions, and whether they lie flat and feel sturdy enough for the item you have in mind. Also consider whether the design will still read well at a smaller scale, and whether the item will be decorative, frequently handled or used in the kitchen.

Ways to use a single block
Zipper pouch or project bag
A quilt block can become a pouch panel. In a 2019 project account, Veronica of Fiber Antics adapted a 12.5-inch unfinished block for a pouch using Sam Hunter’s Chunky Wee Zippy Pouch pattern. Her process used a quilted sandwich, scrap backing as the interior, binding in preparation for zipper insertion, and a zipper. The referenced pattern was described as offering three sizes and shapes plus a custom-size formula; check the pattern’s current availability and instructions at Fiber Antics.
Pillow
Use the block as the pillow front and add a back and closure suited to your chosen pattern. A pillow gives a special or visually striking block a place where it can be seen without needing enough blocks for a larger quilt.

Potholder, trivet or mat
Smaller blocks may suit a potholder, trivet, mug mat or placemat. Quilting educator Create with Claudia recommends insulated batting for potholders and trivets. Follow the batting manufacturer’s instructions and a suitable project pattern; the cited idea does not establish tested heat protection or food-safety performance. Her article also describes a table runner made from two blocks and suggests placemats as another use: Create with Claudia.
Mini quilt or clothing accent
Finish a block as a small wall quilt, or sew it onto a T-shirt or another garment. For clothing, consider how the block’s thickness and the garment fabric will behave together, and whether the finished item can be laundered as intended.
Ways to combine several blocks
Tote or shopping bag
Blocks can serve as bag panels, pockets or appliquéd accents. One York Heritage Quilters Guild project asked participants to bring blocks 6–10 inches finished for use on plain cotton shopping bags; embroidery was optional. Those dimensions belonged to that particular community project, not a universal bag-sizing rule. The example appears in the guild’s February 2024 newsletter edition: York Heritage Quilters Guild newsletter.

Blocks from different projects often vary in size or style. Sashing, borders, coping strips or filler blocks can bring them into a workable layout while helping the differences look intentional. Valley Quilters Guild describes using coping strips and additional small blocks when combining varied blocks; its page is useful as assembly guidance, not as a current event notice: Valley Quilters Guild.
A sampler can keep a varied group together as a personal quilt. If you would rather pass the blocks along, check with a local guild or charity before sending them; organizations set their own needs and acceptance rules.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make mixed blocks look deliberate
Lay out the blocks before sewing them together. Consider color, scale and theme, then decide whether the arrangement needs spacing or balancing pieces. Sashing and borders can help accommodate size differences; coping strips and filler blocks are other options for reconciling varied dimensions.
- Use a consistent sashing width to create visual separation between blocks.
- Add borders where they help the overall layout reach a useful size.
- Use coping strips or filler blocks to adjust dimensions rather than trimming away important parts of a design.
Not every block needs to join a quilt. A block with a strong design may work better on its own as a pillow, pouch or mini quilt than in a group that feels visually crowded.

Share or donate blocks you will not use
Some guilds collect blocks for community projects or quilt challenges. The Star Quilters Guild handout, dated June 23, 2015, attributes this encouragement to Tricia Lynn Maloney: “Take something imperfect and unloved and give it a home in a completed quilt!” Star Quilters Guild handout.
Guild programs are local and can change. For example, York Heritage Quilters Guild documented a shopping-bag project in its February 2024 newsletter, while San Francisco Quilters Guild’s October 2025 newsletter described a dated mystery-bag challenge with its own rule that at least half of the items used on the project front be orphan blocks. That was a rule for that challenge, not a general reuse guideline or current invitation: San Francisco Quilters Guild newsletter.
