Microsoft Paint can remove an image background and save the result as a transparent PNG on supported, up-to-date Windows 11 installations. It can also delete selected areas and place text without an opaque box behind it. However, Paint is not documented as having a general opacity slider for making an entire picture or text 50% see-through.
First decide which effect you need: removing background pixels, making a text box background transparent, or applying adjustable opacity. The correct Paint workflow is different for each.
What “transparent” means in Paint
These commonly confused effects are not the same:

| Semi-transparent picture or text | The pixels remain but are partly see-through, such as 40% or 50% opacity. |
Newer Paint versions support the first three workflows. For adjustable opacity, use an application with a dedicated transparency control.

This is the quickest method for isolating a person, product, object, or other foreground subject.

- Open Paint.
- Choose File > Open, or paste an image onto the canvas.
- Select Remove background in the toolbar.
- Let Paint detect the foreground subject and remove the surrounding background.
- Inspect the result. Transparent areas are shown as a checkerboard pattern.
- Use selection or eraser tools to clean up leftover background areas or restore the outline manually.
- Choose File > Save as and save the result as a PNG.
Microsoft describes Paint’s background-removal feature as working across the whole canvas or within a selected area. The result is not guaranteed to be perfect: hair, fur, thin objects, shadows, glass, and backgrounds with similar colors can be removed incorrectly. For complicated edges, zoom in and clean them with a small eraser, or use a more capable editor.

Remove only a selected part of an image
Manual selection works well when the area is rectangular, geometric, or a clearly separated patch of background.
- Open the image in Paint.
- Choose Select.
- Pick Rectangle or Free-form selection.
- Outline the area you want to remove.
- Press Delete or use the erase command available in your Paint version.
- Repeat the process for additional areas.
- Confirm that the deleted regions show the checkerboard pattern.
- Save the finished image as a PNG.
Do not confuse this with the older Transparent selection instruction found in many Paint tutorials. That setting concerns whether a moved or copied selection carries a solid background with it; it does not make the whole picture transparent. The exact control can differ between classic Paint and newer Windows 11 builds, so follow the underlying workflow rather than expecting an identical checkbox.
Add text without an opaque box
If you want letters over an image without a white or colored rectangle behind them, use Paint’s Text tool.

- Open the image or create a new canvas.
- Select the Text tool, usually shown by the A icon.
- Drag to draw a text box.
- Choose the font, size, alignment, and color.
- Set the text-box background to transparent instead of opaque if that option appears in your version.
- Position and format the text before clicking outside the text box to commit it.
This makes the area behind the text transparent. It does not make the lettering itself translucent.
On Paint versions with layers, adding the text to a new layer is safer. You can keep the text separate from the background, hide or reorder the layer, and erase selected parts of the lettering for a distressed or cut-out effect. Newer Paint versions support adding, removing, reordering, hiding, duplicating, and merging layers. See Microsoft’s Paint layers and transparency announcement for the feature details.

Not through a documented, general opacity control. Current Paint can make pixels transparent by removing them, but that is different from reducing their opacity smoothly. Erasing half of some letters creates missing pixels or a rough pattern; it does not produce the same result as setting text to 50% opacity.
For a faded image, watermark, or genuinely semi-transparent lettering, use an application with an opacity or picture-transparency control. Microsoft documents a transparency setting in desktop PowerPoint and Word that ranges from 0% opaque to 100% fully transparent. The practical workflow is to create or place the artwork there and adjust its transparency, or use a dedicated raster editor with layer opacity and alpha controls.
Paint is fine for a simple, fully opaque watermark. It is a poor fit when you need a precisely adjustable watermark, feathered edges, soft shadows, or professional compositing. Microsoft also documents background tools in Photos and Designer, although their availability and interfaces can vary.

Use layers for safer editing
When your Paint version includes the Layers panel, use it whenever you are adding text or making several edits:

- Open the Layers panel.
- Add a new layer above the image.
- Place the text or artwork on that layer.
- Keep it separate while you position, erase, or refine it.
- Hide, duplicate, reorder, or merge layers only when you are satisfied.
Layers do not automatically provide a universal opacity slider. Their main advantages here are separation and easier recovery from mistakes.
Save transparency correctly
Save the finished file as PNG. PNG preserves transparent pixels; JPEG does not and will replace them with a solid background.
- Keep an untouched copy of the original before removing a background or deleting pixels.
- Use the checkerboard canvas as an initial confirmation that pixels are transparent.
- After saving, reopen the PNG over a dark or colored background to verify that the transparency survived.
- If another application displays the result with a white background, check whether that application supports alpha transparency or flattened the image during import.
Microsoft’s transparency update specifically added support for opening and saving transparent PNG files.
If the transparency tools are missing
Paint is updated through the Microsoft Store, and controls can vary by Windows build, app version, rollout status, and hardware. Older Windows 10 installations and classic Paint may not include the newer layers, checkerboard transparency, or background-removal workflow.

- Confirm that you opened Microsoft Paint, not an image viewer or another Microsoft graphics app.
- Open the Microsoft Store and check for Paint updates.
- Reopen the image after updating.
- Look for Remove background, the checkerboard canvas behavior, and the Layers panel.
- If automatic removal is unavailable, use Rectangle or Free-form selection followed by Delete.
Object Select may provide another way to isolate an object, but Microsoft lists it among features with specific Copilot+ PC and updated-app requirements. You do not need a Copilot+ PC for the basic manual selection workflow, and you should not assume every Windows 11 computer has the same Paint controls. The deleted area is white instead of checkerboard
Undo if possible, update Paint, reopen the original, and remove the background again. Then save explicitly as PNG and reopen that PNG over a contrasting background. A white result can mean the installed Paint version does not preserve alpha transparency, the canvas was flattened, white was painted instead of pixels being deleted, or the destination app is merely displaying transparency as white.
Remove background is not visible
Update Paint and check that an image is open on the canvas. The feature may be absent from an older build or particular rollout. Use manual selection and deletion, or try Photos or Designer if available on your Windows installation.
The edges are jagged
Zoom in, use a smaller eraser, and avoid repeatedly resizing the cutout. Paint is a basic raster editor, so a dedicated editor is preferable for hair, fur, glass, shadows, or other fine edges.

Paint removes part of the subject
Undo and try a selection containing only the intended object if your version supports selection-scoped background removal. You can also crop the working area or restore missing pixels manually from the original copy.

Text has a rectangle behind it
Set the Text tool’s background to transparent if that option is available. If it is not, place the text on a separate transparent layer or use another application.
The text becomes fixed and cannot be edited
Paint may commit or rasterize text when you click outside its text box. Set the position, size, font, and color first. A separate layer makes later edits easier, but rasterized Paint text is not the same as editable document text.
Paint, Paint 3D, and alternatives
Older tutorials often recommend Paint 3D or a Transparent selection checkbox. Those instructions may not match the current Microsoft Paint installed on your PC. Start by checking the tools in your current Paint app instead of assuming Paint 3D is required.
For a quick cutout, current Paint’s background removal may be enough. For a simple geometric deletion, manual selection is more predictable. For percentage opacity, refined masks, feathering, batch work, or professional compositing, choose PowerPoint or Word for documented picture transparency, Photos or Designer for supported background-editing features, or a dedicated image editor for deeper control. Availability, licensing, and feature sets vary, so verify the option in the application installed on your PC.
