Short answer: refill a UV printer cartridge only when the printer or cartridge supplier explicitly documents that the system is refillable. Otherwise, adding ink with a syringe may leave the printer reporting “empty,” contaminate the ink path, invalidate support, or damage an expensive printhead.
Modern UV cartridges are more than liquid containers. They can include identification chips, valves, filters, vents, expiration data, color-specific ports, and pressure-management features. Some printers also use separate cleaning, moisturizing, or waste-ink cartridges. The late-1990s inkjet refill idea transfers only partially.
First: identify what “refilling” means
People use refill to describe several very different practices:

- Topping up the original cartridge: adding ink while retaining its chip, filter, valve, and seals.
- Refilling a reusable cartridge or tank: using hardware designed for repeated filling, usually with a resettable or replaceable chip.
- Using a third-party prefilled cartridge: replacing the manufacturer’s cartridge with a compatible alternative without manually transferring ink.
- Converting to bulk ink: installing bottles, tubing, dampers, filters, pressure controls, chips, and sometimes new color profiles.
These options differ substantially in cost, risk, maintenance, and effect on warranty or service. A cartridge that physically accepts liquid is not necessarily refillable in the operational sense.
Why UV ink is not old dye ink
Many UV-curable inks contain pigments, photoinitiators, and other components that harden when exposed to ultraviolet light. They are formulated to cure on the substrate rather than simply dry by evaporation. See the general explanation of UV ink chemistry in eufyMake’s UV-ink information.
That changes the refill problem:
- Light exposure: residue at a cartridge opening, syringe, tube, damper, nozzle plate, or printhead can cure when exposed to sunlight or another UV source. Work in a protected area and keep containers closed.
- Ink chemistry: viscosity, surface tension, pigment-particle size, curing response, and chemical compatibility must suit the printhead and delivery system.
- Pressure and filtration: a cartridge may depend on a particular vent, valve, filter, and air balance. Overfilling or damaging one component can cause leaks or uncontrolled flow.
- White ink: white pigment can settle and may require agitation, circulation, or more frequent maintenance. Do not assume that a CMYK refill procedure also works for white.
- Maintenance consumption: cleaning, charging, purging, and head protection may consume ink even when the printer is idle. Epson documents both cleaning consumption and an ink reserve used to protect the printhead.
Canon describes daily and weekly maintenance as necessary for optimum UV-printing performance. HP’s UV-ink procedure includes shaking ink and repeated empty/fill cycles after an ink change. These are examples of printer-specific requirements, not universal instructions.

Can your cartridge actually be refilled?
Before opening anything, record the following:
- printer make and exact model;
- cartridge part number and capacity;
- ink series and color configuration;
- chip type, reset status, and expiration behavior;
- valve, vent, membrane, filter, and seal design;
- separate cleaning, moisturizing, circulation, or waste cartridges;
- the manufacturer’s position on refilling and third-party consumables;
- warranty, service, and firmware implications.
For example, the official eufyMake E1 cartridge instructions describe the cartridges as proprietary and say third-party accessories are not supported. They also describe color-specific foolproofing ports, so forcing a cartridge into another slot can create a color mismatch or damage the system.
xTool’s O1 guidance likewise tells users to replace low cartridges, use the correct cartridge configuration, and run the software’s fill-ink operation. Those instructions are not a documented invitation to refill the cartridge manually.
Cartridge chips may track ink information independently of the amount of liquid inside. Epson warns that non-genuine ink can cause erratic operation or damage that is not covered by warranty. Read the documentation for the exact printer rather than assuming that a chip from another model will work.

The compatibility test: a simple decision tree
- Does the manufacturer or cartridge supplier explicitly document refilling?
If no, stop and use an official cartridge, a documented compatible cartridge, or professional support. - Is the cartridge designed for reuse?
Look for a defined filling port, replaceable seals, a specified fill quantity, and a supported chip procedure—not merely a hole that can be drilled. - Is the exact ink series documented for your printer?
“UV ink,” “works with the same printhead,” or “universal” is not sufficient. - Does the ink supplier identify the tested printer, printhead, channels, curing conditions, and maintenance fluid?
If not, treat compatibility as unverified. - Can you recover from a failed refill?
You need a spare cartridge, approved flush, test media, and a plan for chip errors, leaks, or poor curing.
Compatibility must cover the printhead, ink path, dampers, tubing, filters, pump, capping station, UV wavelength and power, substrate adhesion, white-ink behavior, profiles, firmware, and cartridge electronics. A technical data sheet is useful evidence, but it does not prove that an ink works in every printer using the same head. Nazdar’s technical material illustrates this printer- and system-specific approach.
Equipment for a supported refill
If your system is genuinely documented as refillable, prepare:
- the exact printer-specific UV ink;
- a dedicated syringe or filling tool for each color;
- compatible luer fittings;
- nitrile gloves and protective eyewear;
- an opaque or UV-shielded work area;
- lint-free wipes;
- approved UV maintenance or flushing solution;
- a sealed waste container;
- replacement plugs, seals, or caps;
- a documented replacement or reset chip, if required;
- a scale if filling by specified weight;
- test media and the SDS for ink and cleaning fluid.
Never use one syringe for multiple colors. Keep separate tools for white, varnish, cleaning fluid, and different ink chemistries. Cross-contamination can block filters or nozzles.
Follow the SDS and manufacturer PPE instructions. Canon and Epson both specify protective measures when ink or maintenance fluid may contact the operator.
A conditional refill workflow
The following is a decision-controlled workflow, not a universal manufacturer-approved recipe. Exact quantities, tools, chip steps, and software commands are model-specific.
1. Record the printer’s starting condition
Photograph cartridge labels and positions. Record ink levels, warnings, error codes, dates, ink series, and color profile. Print a nozzle check or diagnostic pattern.
Do not begin with a printer that already has missing nozzles, leaks, curing faults, or unexplained color shifts. Refilling can make the original fault harder to diagnose.
2. Read the manual and SDS
Confirm whether refilling is authorized, whether the cartridge can be removed and reinstalled, whether ink must be shaken or circulated, which fill or charge routine is required, and which maintenance fluid is approved. xTool’s documented O1 procedure, for example, includes shaking the cartridge before installation, using nitrile gloves, preserving protective film, installing the correct cartridge, and running the software fill-ink operation.

3. Control light and contamination
Work away from direct sunlight and unnecessary UV sources. Keep ink containers closed except during transfer. Do not use open cups, dusty surfaces, or improvised household containers.
4. Remove the cartridge carefully
Do not pry, drill, squeeze, aggressively shake, or dismantle the cartridge unless the manufacturer or supplier specifies that method. A cartridge may contain a spring-loaded valve, vent, filter, pressure-balancing feature, chip, and fragile seals. Epson warns that dropping, striking, dismantling, or vigorously shaking cartridges can cause leaks or damage.
Epson cartridge-handling precautions
5. Match the ink exactly
Use the same ink series unless you have a documented conversion procedure. Do not mix manufacturers, curing families, flexible and rigid white formulations, cleaning fluid and ink, or unrelated water-based, dye, pigment, and UV systems.
If changing ink, follow the supplier’s flushing and transition procedure. HP describes repeated empty/fill cycles to move old or non-homogeneous ink from the printheads, pump, and tubing before linearization and testing.

Do not fill to the top. Preserve the designed air space and pressure behavior. Overfilling can cause leaks, pressure imbalance, ink on electrical contacts, uncontrolled flow, or contamination inside the printer. If no reliable volume or weight specification exists, do not proceed.
7. Seal and inspect
Install the approved seal or plug. Clean the exterior without wetting the chip. Inspect for seepage, swelling, or damage. Keep the cartridge upright and do not install one that leaks.
8. Resolve the electronic state
The printer may continue to display “empty” because the chip is one-time-use, the cartridge has an expiration date, a serial number is stored, firmware requires authentication, or the level estimate is separate from the physical ink volume.
Use only a documented model-specific reset or replacement-chip process. Do not treat battery, pin-shorting, firmware, or chip-programming hacks as normal procedures; they can damage the printer or defeat safety and service controls.

- Exceptional Productivity: Enhance your printer’s performance with our high-quality UV DTF Ink. UV DTF Ink is widely used in various industries, such as packaging, labeling, signage, automotive, electronics, and promotional products.
9. Run the documented fill or charge routine
Use the manufacturer’s ink-fill, charge, purge, or initialization function. Expect some ink consumption during charging and cleaning. Do not repeatedly run cleaning cycles to force acceptance of an unverified cartridge.
10. Test before production
- nozzle check;
- color bars;
- white-ink or varnish test, where applicable;
- small print on the intended substrate;
- adhesion and curing check;
- visual inspection under normal lighting;
- repeatability test after the printer sits idle.
Look for banding, missing nozzles, satellites, misting, weak white density, varnish mismatch, tackiness, poor adhesion, color shift, excessive odor, leaks, and pressure instability. Do not judge the result from the liquid color in the cartridge: HP cautions that uncured liquid may not resemble the final printed and cured appearance.

The printer says “empty”
Likely causes include a non-resettable chip, stored serial number, expiration, firmware authentication, or an ink estimate unrelated to actual volume. Reinstall the original cartridge if safe, obtain the correct documented replacement or reset chip, or contact the printer vendor. Do not repeatedly insert and remove the cartridge.
The printer accepts it but prints poorly
Stop production. Check for the wrong ink series, mixed ink in the delivery path, air, a blocked filter, settled white pigment, partially cured ink, incorrect head height, unsuitable media, a wrong profile, insufficient UV exposure, or a contaminated nozzle plate. If ink was changed, follow the documented flush and transition procedure.
Ink leaks
Stop the printer if safe. Isolate power according to the service manual, contain the spill, protect skin and eyes, and prevent UV exposure from curing the spill in place. Replace damaged seals or the cartridge; do not improvise a permanent repair.
White ink separates or becomes weak
Check the printer’s agitation or circulation routine, idle-time instructions, ink age and storage, and the white-ink filter and line. Many systems require more white-ink maintenance than CMYK, but the exact routine must come from the printer manual.
Ink is low while the printer still runs
Find the manufacturer’s minimum level and replacement procedure before continuing. xTool warns that continuing to operate with low ink or moisturizing fluid may damage the printer.

Current model examples
eufyMake E1
eufyMake’s official documentation identifies E1 cartridges as proprietary and says third-party accessories are unsupported. That makes a generic refill kit a poor recommendation unless the owner knowingly accepts unsupported experimentation. Check the official product collection and ink collection for current U.S. listings and availability; prices and packages can change.
xTool O1 Omni
xTool’s O1 support documentation instructs users to use the correct cartridge, follow PPE precautions, and run the printer’s fill-ink process. Its official ink listing has shown model-specific 125 mL cartridges, but stock and shipping status can change. See the current ink page and support instructions. Neither procedure should be generalized to another UV printer.
Safety, storage, and disposal
Treat UV ink as a chemical consumable whose handling requirements depend on its formulation and SDS—not as ordinary office ink. Use gloves, protective eyewear, suitable ventilation, closed containers, and a controlled work area without food, drinks, children, or pets.
For skin contact, follow the SDS; Epson advises washing with soap and water. For eye contact, flush immediately and seek medical help if discomfort or vision problems continue. xTool’s O1 guidance specifies flushing eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seeking medical attention.
Store ink as the manufacturer specifies, protected from inappropriate light, heat, contamination, and freezing. Dispose of contaminated wipes, waste ink, cartridges, and cleaning fluid according to the SDS, local hazardous-waste rules, and the printer manufacturer’s instructions.
When the correct answer is “do not refill”
Buy the official cartridge when the printer uses proprietary or encrypted cartridges, the manufacturer rejects third-party accessories, the printer is under warranty, the system has automated moisture or white-ink management, the formulation cannot be verified, or there is no documented chip path. For an occasional hobby user, official consumables may also be cheaper overall because one failed refill can exceed the apparent ink saving.
Use a professional ink supplier or conversion service when changing multiple channels on a commercial printer or when the conversion requires flushing, dampers, filters, pressure adjustment, profiling, and service support. Nazdar’s UV-ink technical data and maintenance-solution data demonstrate the level of system-specific documentation commercial users should expect.
