You can turn an old sweater into a stuffed animal by choosing a pattern that suits its knit, stabilizing wool before cutting when needed, sewing the pieces with an opening for turning, then stuffing and closing the toy. A sewing machine is optional. The main material decision is the sweater: wool can be felted to help keep cut edges from unraveling, while cotton and acrylic do not felt like wool.
Choose a sweater and a pattern that work together
Start with a clean sweater in good enough condition to provide the pattern pieces. Check that it has enough usable fabric, and consider how its colors, ribbing, or motifs might fit the animal. A sweater memory bear or other keepsake can make use of distinctive fabric, but keep extra material until you have checked the cut pieces.
Match the pattern to the fabric’s thickness and stretch. A simple animal silhouette can be drawn by hand; a knit-specific pattern gives more guidance for sweater fabric. The Wee Little Chicks pattern, for example, lists lightly felted wool or cashmere sweater knit as an option.

- A clean sweater and a pattern suitable for its knit.
- Scissors, thread, and a hand-sewing needle. A sewing machine is optional.
- Stuffing, such as polyester fiberfill (sometimes called polyfil) or wool batting.
- Optional felt for details.
- Optional fusible interfacing and an iron, if the pattern calls for stabilizing the fabric.
Prepare the sweater before cutting
If you are using a mostly wool sweater and your project depends on felting to stabilize the knit, felt it before cutting. The Shiny Happy World sweater tutorial describes a hot, soapy wash approach and notes that cotton and acrylic do not felt like wool. Felting changes the garment, and results can vary with fiber blends and construction, so check the care label and test an inconspicuous area where appropriate rather than assuming one wash method suits every sweater.

If you are not felting the sweater, choose a pattern that can handle the fabric as it is. Knit edges may unravel or stretch, so avoid cutting until you are confident the pattern and construction are a reasonable match.
Cut and sew the pieces
- Lay out the pattern. Position pieces to make useful use of color blocks, ribbing, or motifs, if desired. Keep extra fabric until all pieces are checked.
- Cut the fabric. Follow the pattern’s piece and seam instructions; there is no single seam allowance that applies to every design.
- Sew the body. Stitch the pieces by hand or machine, leaving the pattern’s opening for turning and stuffing. Keep the seams consistent and avoid stretching the knit as you work.
- Turn and fill. Turn the sewn body right side out. Add fiberfill or wool batting in manageable portions and distribute it evenly.
- Close the opening. Sew the opening shut securely, following the pattern’s finishing instructions.
The Nicole Stevenson sweater tutorial also describes a recycled-sweater stuffed-animal project and its closure method. Follow the instructions for your chosen pattern rather than applying one stitch or seam measurement to every knit.

Choose face details with the recipient in mind
For a toy intended for a child under two, the Shannon Fabrics stuffed-animal guide recommends embroidered eyes rather than safety eyes.
