You don’t need to collect dolls to enjoy watching a woodworker turn a plain cylinder into a finished kokeshi. Make’s 2015 feature follows Yasuo Okazaki making a naruko-style doll: shaping its head and body on a lathe, adding the head while the body is still mounted, and finishing the piece with painted details.
Why the making is worth watching
The appeal is the transformation. A wooden blank becomes a recognizable figure through controlled turning, sanding and painting. The lathe makes the early changes especially clear: the wood spins as Okazaki shapes the head, neck and body, then paints lines onto the surface.
The unusual moment comes before the body leaves the lathe. Okazaki attaches the head while the body is still mounted, creating a loose fit. Make says the head makes a “kyu-kyu” sound when turned, an explanation the feature attributes to a sale listing rather than to Okazaki.
How Okazaki makes the doll
- Shape the head and neck. Okazaki starts with a wooden cylinder and turns the upper section into the doll’s head and neck.
- Turn and sand the body. He shapes the body on the lathe and sands it smooth.
- Paint the turning lines. While the body remains on the lathe, he paints lines onto the spinning surface.
- Attach the head. Before removing the body from the lathe, he attaches the head. The loose fit is associated with the “kyu-kyu” sound described in the feature.
- Add the finishing details. After turning, he paints finer features, signs the bottom and rubs the doll with what the author says appears to be wax.
This is a view of a skilled maker’s process, not a beginner woodturning tutorial or safety guide. Make does not identify the lathe, tools or supplies used.

What is a kokeshi doll?
Make describes kokeshi as cylindrical wooden dolls without arms or legs, decorated with painted patterns. Its feature attributes that description to Collectors Weekly, whose account also compares the turning process to making chair or table legs. The naruko style shown in the video is one form of kokeshi; the article does not offer a broader comparison of regional styles.
What does the article say about kokeshi history?
Make relays Collectors Weekly’s account that kokeshi originated in rural Tohoku, in northeastern Japan, during the Bunka-Bunsei eras, dated 1804–29. That historical framing is presented through the 2015 feature’s cited secondary source, not as a newly verified primary-source history. The feature also repeats a broad claim about postwar popularity among American tourists, but does not establish it with a dedicated historical source, so it is best treated cautiously.
