The Scrappy Star Wall Quilt finishes at 40½ inches square, with a 32-inch finished center block. It is designed for assorted red, white, and blue prints, so suitable scraps can work in place of newly purchased fabric. The instructions below outline the materials and main construction sequence; use the published pattern for its complete cutting quantities and layout.

The pattern, published by American Patchwork & Quilting Editors on May 9, 2022, was inspired by Jo Kramer and Kelli Hanken of Jo’s Country Junction and tested by Diane Tomlinson. It specifies assorted white, red, and blue prints for a scrappy star and pieced border. Yardages and cutting directions assume 42 inches of usable fabric width.
#1 Best Overall
Before buying fabric, sort your stash by color and check whether the pieces you have can supply the pattern’s cuts. The instructions also call for additional 4½-inch squares from scraps in all three colors; they do not state a fixed number for those extra squares in the material summary.
Gather the specified materials
| Material | Amount | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Assorted white prints | 1 yard total | Pattern yardage assumes 42 inches of usable width. |
| Assorted red prints | ½ yard total | Pattern yardage assumes 42 inches of usable width. |
| Assorted blue prints | ¾ yard total | Pattern yardage assumes 42 inches of usable width. |
| Binding fabric | ½ yard | Prepare strips as directed in the pattern. |
| Backing fabric | 2¾ yards | Pattern specification. |
| Batting | One 49-inch-square piece | Pattern specification. |
| Additional scraps | 4½-inch squares in white, red, and blue | The material summary does not give a total count. |
These are the pattern’s listed amounts, not a requirement to buy a coordinated bundle. If your scraps provide the required cuts, use them; check the full cutting instructions before deciding whether you need more fabric.

Make the triangle-squares
- Pair marked white squares with the corresponding colored squares as directed in the pattern.
- Draw a diagonal on each marked square. To reduce stretching while marking, the pattern suggests placing 220-grit sandpaper underneath the fabric.
- Sew a quarter-inch seam on each side of the marked diagonal, then cut along the line to make two triangle-square units. Each unit is intended to measure 4½ inches square, including seam allowances.
The pattern’s optional oversize-and-trim method uses 5-inch squares in place of the specified 4⅞-inch squares. Follow that method’s trimming directions in the published instructions rather than substituting sizes without trimming.

- Arrange the triangle-squares with the larger squares to form four block quarters, following the pattern layout.
- Join the pieces in each quarter, then sew the four quarters together to make the center block. Its finished size is 32 inches square.
- Make the pieced borders from rows of 4½-inch squares and attach them around the center as shown in the pattern. Use quarter-inch seam allowances throughout.
Because the exact cutting counts and arrangement determine the star and border, refer to the pattern diagrams and complete cutting list while laying out the pieces.
