A 2-liter plastic water bottle may be recyclable, but your local recycling program decides whether it accepts it. Empty the bottle, check your city or hauler’s instructions for bottles and caps, and use an accepted curbside, drop-off, or deposit-return option.
Check whether your local program accepts the bottle
Recycling rules vary by municipality and hauler. Look up the accepted-material list for your address and confirm it covers plastic beverage bottles. If curbside collection does not accept the bottle, your area may offer an approved drop-off location or, where a deposit system applies, a return route.
Before choosing a route, check these details in your local program’s current instructions:

Prepare the bottle for collection
Empty it
Pour out any remaining water. EPA’s general guidance says accepted containers should be empty and rinsed or scraped free of food debris. For a water bottle, follow local cleanliness rules; this does not mean extensive washing is universally required.
Check the cap and label instructions
EPA says plastic bottle caps and labels can typically stay on, but local programs may have different requirements. Follow your provider’s instructions rather than assuming one preparation rule applies everywhere.

Do not assume you need to crush it
There is no universal rule established here about crushing a bottle. If your municipality or recycling facility gives a specific instruction, use that; otherwise, follow its standard bottle-preparation guidance.
What the number on the bottle means
The resin identification number identifies the type of plastic and may help with sorting. It is not a promise that local collection accepts the bottle. As the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains, “The resin number is contained in a triangle that looks very similar to the recycling symbol. However, this symbol does not necessarily mean it can be collected for recycling in your community.” See EPA’s common recyclables guidance and recycling FAQ.

What happens after collection
In the United States, recycling involves collection, processing, and remanufacturing. Plastic bottles may be sorted after collection and sent to a plastics reclaimer; the exact route and accepted materials vary by location. EPA describes this system in its recycling basics overview.

EPA reported that 29.1% of PET bottles and jars—910,000 tons—were recycled in the United States in 2018. That is a historical national estimate for PET bottles and jars, not a current rate and not a figure specific to 2-liter water bottles. EPA also reported that 13.6% of plastic containers and packaging generated in 2018 was recycled; this broader category is not comparable to the PET bottle-and-jar figure as a measure of two-liter bottle recycling. The figures are from EPA’s plastic materials data.

Reduce disposable bottle waste in the future
EPA’s waste-management hierarchy puts reducing and reusing ahead of recycling. For future use, it suggests options such as carrying a reusable bottle or thermos, using tap-water filtration, and refilling instead of repeatedly buying disposable bottles. These are ways to reduce future waste, not requirements for recycling the bottle you already have. See EPA’s reducing and reusing guidance.
