To make a paper X-Wing, first choose the result you want: a folded display model made from one square sheet, or a separate cut-and-fold flyer made from a printed A4 template. For traditional origami, follow one complete tutorial from start to finish; the available designs have different paper sizes and fold sequences, so their steps should not be mixed.

Choose the X-Wing model that fits your goal

Guide Paper and result Difficulty and format
ICSF illustrated guide 15 cm square of thin paper, colored on one side and white on the other; folded display model. Illustrated 11-page guide. It warns that later folds become very thin and fiddly.
Pikes Peak Library District activity Origami paper; folded display model. Short 10-step activity presented for ages 9–12. The handout recommends a video for its paper-collapse step.
OrigamiOK instructions 20 × 20 cm square paper; estimated finished size 7.5 × 8.78 cm. Advanced, 32 steps, estimated 30 minutes.
Jetfolds printable A4 printer paper printed with a template; a cut-and-fold model intended to fly. Printable template and linked video tutorial; requires cutting as well as folding.

For a one-sheet origami model, pick the guide whose paper size and complexity suit you. The Pikes Peak activity is the shortest route listed here; OrigamiOK provides a longer advanced sequence. The ICSF guide is another illustrated option, but its later creases are especially narrow. None of these display-model instructions is interchangeable with the Jetfolds flyer template.

What you need for a folded display model

  • A square sheet sized for your chosen guide: 15 cm for the ICSF instructions or 20 × 20 cm for OrigamiOK.
  • For the ICSF design, thin paper colored on one side and white on the other.
  • A flat surface and enough time to align each crease carefully, especially as the folds get narrower.

Use the paper dimensions specified by the tutorial rather than assuming all X-Wing designs use the same size. The guides describe different models, so changing the sheet size or borrowing a fold from another sequence may alter the result.

Fold the model using one tutorial from beginning to end

  1. Set out the paper specified by your chosen guide. Use the 15 cm square for the ICSF model or a 20 × 20 cm square for the OrigamiOK model. If you are following the library activity, use origami paper as its handout directs.
  2. Work through the folds in order. Match each fold to the diagram or step in your selected instructions. Do not substitute a step from a different X-Wing design.
  3. Make creases crisp and aligned. This matters particularly in the later, narrow folds of the ICSF sequence; its guide specifically notes that these become very thin.
  4. Pause at any collapse or base-forming step. Compare the paper with the guide’s illustration before pressing the fold flat. The Pikes Peak handout suggests using its tutorial video for its collapse step rather than guessing.
  5. Finish the remaining steps in the same guide. Follow its final shaping instructions without importing steps from a second model.

If you want a paper X-Wing that flies

The Jetfolds X-Wing PDF is a different project from square-paper origami: it uses an A4 sheet printed with markings, then cut and folded. Its instructions include adjusting stabilizers and throwing the finished model firmly. Follow that template and its linked video as a complete project; the cutting and flight adjustments do not belong to the display-model folds above.

For a particular Star Wars X-Wing variant

If fidelity to a named design matters more than choosing the shortest sequence, Chris Alexander’s Star Wars Origami pages distinguish the T-65 and T-70. His T-65 page describes it as his first entirely original design and provides downloadable model paper and a tutorial. The T-70 page notes that its upper and lower wings are asymmetrical and describes it as one of the most complex models in Star Wars Origami 2.
