Set your Canon EOS camera’s Picture Style to Monochrome. On many models, the quickest route is MENU → Shooting menu → Picture Style → Monochrome. Some cameras also offer Q/Quick Control → Picture Style → Monochrome.

If you may want the color photograph later, do not shoot JPEG-only: choose RAW or, for the safest beginner-friendly option, RAW+JPEG.

Turn on black-and-white shooting

These steps apply to Canon EOS cameras that support Picture Style, including many older DSLRs and EOS R-series mirrorless models:

  1. Turn the camera on.
  2. Move the mode dial to P, Tv, Av, or M. Full Auto and scene modes may hide or restrict Picture Style controls.
  3. Press MENU.
  4. Open the Shooting menu and select Picture Style.
  5. Choose Monochrome, then press SET or OK.
  6. Take a test photograph and check the LCD preview.

On many EOS bodies, you can instead press Q, highlight Picture Style, choose Monochrome, and confirm. The exact menu tab, button, and wording vary by model and firmware; Canon’s Picture Style guidance describes the general workflow.

Choose the right file format first

The most important decision is not the menu—it is whether you want a finished black-and-white JPEG or the option to recover the original color.

Goal Recommended setting
Finished black-and-white files straight from the camera JPEG + Monochrome
Maximum editing flexibility RAW
Immediate B&W JPEG plus a recoverable color original RAW+JPEG + Monochrome
Unsure whether the final image should be color or monochrome RAW or RAW+JPEG

What happens to JPEG files?

A JPEG captured with Monochrome is a rendered black-and-white image. The original color information is not normally recoverable from that JPEG. Canon specifically warns users to cancel Monochrome before shooting if they want color JPEGs.

What happens to RAW files?

A RAW file retains the camera’s underlying color capture data. Monochrome affects the camera-rendered preview and JPEG output, while Canon software can use or change the Picture Style when developing the RAW file. Third-party applications may interpret the embedded preview or Canon settings differently.

RAW+JPEG is the best experiment-friendly choice: the JPEG gives you an immediate black-and-white result, while the RAW file preserves the possibility of making a color version or a different monochrome conversion later. Remember that RAW files must be developed or exported before normal sharing or printing.

If you cannot find Picture Style

Try these fixes in order:

  1. Switch the mode dial to P, then open the full MENU again.
  2. Exit Full Auto, a scene mode, or another simplified shooting mode.
  3. Make sure the camera is in still-photo mode rather than movie mode.
  4. Look in the full Shooting menu instead of only the Q screen.
  5. Check the manual for the exact EOS model.

Older EOS DSLRs may have a physical Picture Style button; newer models may place the control in the Q menu or a touch-oriented shooting menu. Still photography and video can also use separate or modified image controls. Not every EOS body has the same Picture Style implementation, so a model-specific manual is the final authority. Canon’s EOS 40D support page, for example, shows Monochrome on an older Picture Style-equipped DSLR.

Improve the monochrome look

After selecting Monochrome, some EOS cameras let you press INFO, SET, or an on-screen edit control to adjust the Picture Style. Available controls differ by model, but commonly include:

Canon EOS Rebel T7 DSLR Camera EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is II Lens Kit
  • 24.1 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor with is 100–6400 (H: 12800)
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC technology
  • 9-Point AF system and AI Servo AF
  • Optical Viewfinder with approx 95% viewing coverage
  • Use the EOS Utility Webcam Beta Software (Mac and Windows) to turn your compatible Canon camera into a high-quality webcam. Compatible Lenses- Canon EF Lenses (including EF-S lenses, excluding EF-M lenses)
  • Sharpness: changes perceived edge definition.
  • Contrast: increases or reduces separation between light and dark tones.
  • Filter effect: changes how colors in the original scene translate into gray tones.
  • Toning: adds a tint such as warm or cool monochrome on supported models.

A filter effect is a digital tonal-rendering choice, not the same thing as placing a colored physical filter on the lens. Test any setting on skin, foliage, sky, and strongly colored subjects before relying on it. Canon manuals for cameras such as the EOS 5D and EOS-1D Mark III document these types of Monochrome parameters, but the choices are not identical across EOS generations.

Do not ignore white balance

White balance still influences the camera’s processing and the tonal relationships in the resulting image. Canon manuals recommend choosing a suitable white balance for natural-looking monochrome results. With RAW, white balance remains adjustable during development, although the selected setting can affect the preview and JPEG rendering.

Watch exposure carefully

Monochrome does not solve exposure problems. Use an appropriate shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and flash exposure. If your camera provides them, check the histogram and highlight warnings: clipped highlights and blocked shadows can be especially conspicuous in black and white.

Return the camera to color

Use the same control:

MENU → Picture Style → Standard

Depending on the model, you can also select Auto, Neutral, or another color Picture Style. Confirm the setting before your next shoot.

Changing Picture Style does not repair photographs already captured as monochrome JPEGs. Existing JPEGs remain black and white. A RAW file from the earlier shoot can generally be developed in color, provided you still have the original RAW file.

In-camera black and white or conversion later?

Use Monochrome in the camera when:

  • You want to compose while seeing a black-and-white preview.
  • You need ready-to-share JPEGs immediately.
  • You are deliberately committing to a monochrome project.
  • You want to use the camera’s built-in contrast, filter, or toning controls.

Shoot color RAW and convert later when:

  • You are undecided about the final treatment.
  • Color relationships may matter later.
  • You want to compare different grayscale mixes.
  • You need maximum control over highlights, shadows, color channels, and white balance.

For Canon owners who want to process RAW files later, Canon’s own Picture Style resources and Canon Digital Photo Professional are sensible first options. You do not need to buy editing software to activate Monochrome in the camera. A paid editor may be worthwhile only if you need broader cataloging, synchronization, advanced local adjustments, compositing, or a non-Canon workflow.

Common problems and fixes

“The LCD is black and white, but my computer shows color.”

Check the file extension. You may be viewing a RAW file in software that ignores Canon’s Picture Style or uses its own RAW rendering. Compare the RAW with any separately recorded JPEG, or open the RAW in Canon Digital Photo Professional and inspect the Picture Style settings. The embedded preview and the developed RAW do not have to look identical in every application.

“I changed to Monochrome, but old photos are still black and white.”

Picture Style affects new captures. It does not retroactively change an existing JPEG. A RAW file may be reinterpreted during development, depending on the software.

“I cannot get the color back from a JPEG.”

That is expected when the JPEG was captured with Monochrome. The rendered JPEG does not retain the original color data. Look for the corresponding RAW file if you recorded one.

“The camera is still recording color.”

Make sure you changed the still-photo Picture Style rather than a movie setting or preview-only option. If the camera is recording RAW only, your viewing application may be ignoring Canon’s Picture Style metadata. If you are recording RAW+JPEG, check the JPEG and RAW files separately.

The safest practical setup

If you are trying black and white for the first time, set the camera to RAW+JPEG, choose Monochrome, and take a short test series. You will see the scene in monochrome while composing, receive immediate B&W JPEGs, and retain the RAW originals if you later decide that a color version or a different conversion works better.
