You can make sound effects with a phone or microphone, everyday materials and audio-editing software. The core process is to decide what the sound needs to communicate, record several versions, then edit and shape the best take. You do not need the literal object shown on screen—or specialized gear—to get started.

Start with the sound the audience needs
Describe the effect by what it should sound like: a sharp transient, low rumble, gritty scrape, soft rustle, resonant ring or sustained texture. If you are matching an action in a video or film, aim for the sound that sells the moment rather than assuming the real action will record well.
That approach is called Foley: performers record and mix sounds during post-production to create or enhance what a scene needs. The source can be a different object or movement from the one shown. Foley is one option among several; you can also process recordings or combine them with synthesized sound. A 2023 DCASE Foley sound-synthesis challenge evaluated submissions for audio quality, fit-to-category and diversity, reflecting that a useful effect is judged by both how it sounds and how well it serves its intended role. The challenge received 17 submissions; that figure applies only to that event, not to the size of the Foley field. Read the DCASE 2023 report.

Choose a sound source and recording device
Try an object, surface, material or movement that might produce the texture you want. No household prop is guaranteed to make a particular effect: record it and listen before deciding whether it works. Change the material, angle, distance or force if the result is not right.
Use a recording device you already have if it captures a usable signal. For computer recording, a USB microphone can connect directly. A microphone with an XLR connection requires an audio interface; some 3.5 mm microphones need an adapter to work with a computer’s combined headset port. Check the connection before buying anything. For a sound you need to capture away from your desk, a portable recorder is one possible category, but a particular model is not required.

The recording device captures the sound; editing software trims and transforms it. They are separate parts of the workflow, and neither a new microphone nor a specific program is essential for a first attempt.
Prepare the room and set the input level
- Reduce avoidable noise. Turn off humming equipment where practical. Curtains, rugs, bedding and clothes can absorb reflections and make a room less echoey.
- Set the input before the real take. Audacity’s beginner guidance suggests normal speech peaks between −18 dB and −6 dB. Treat that as a speech starting point, not a universal target for effects: a sudden impact or other sharp transient can peak much higher than the sound around it.
- Keep peaks below 0 dB. A signal that reaches 0 dB clips, and clipped peaks cannot be repaired after recording. A quiet take can be amplified later, but that also raises room noise.
- Capture room silence and test first. Record a few seconds without performing, then make a short test take. Stop and listen for hum, echo, distortion and unwanted handling noise before recording the full session.
- Monitor safely. Headphones let you listen without sending playback into the microphone. If input monitoring is on, speakers can feed back into the mic and create a loud howl; put on headphones first and keep the playback level low.

Record variations, then select the useful take
Record multiple attempts and vary one or more qualities—distance, force, angle or material—while keeping the input level under control. Listen back rather than relying on how the sound seemed in the room. Keep the original recording so you can revisit it if an edit or effect does not work.
There is no standard number of takes. Stop when you have a version that communicates the intended sound and can be edited cleanly.

Edit and shape the effect
Trim unwanted lead-in or tail, split clips around useful events, and move or remove sections as needed. Then experiment with effects, comparing each result with the unprocessed recording. Undo or change settings if the sound moves away from the target.
Audacity distinguishes between destructive effects, which rewrite the selected audio, and realtime effects, which leave the recording intact so you can adjust or remove the effect later. When you are still exploring, keeping processing adjustable makes it easier to change direction. Audacity documents basic clip editing and applying effects. Adobe Audition also offers an SFX clip category and tools such as loudness matching and repair controls; those are software options, not prerequisites. Save an editable project and export for your destination
Keep the editable project as well as an exported audio file. The correct delivery format and technical settings depend on where the sound will be used, so check the requirements for your video, game, podcast or other destination rather than assuming one setting fits all.
