For an instantly recognizable ’80s-inspired look, pair vivid eyeshadow with blush swept high toward the temples, defined lashes, full brows, and a bold lip. You can make the color and liner dramatic for a period-inspired finish or soften them for a modern take; there is no single formula that represents everyone’s makeup in the decade.
What makes an ’80s makeup look?
The signature is expressive color: eyes, cheeks, and lips can all make a statement at once. L’Oréal Paris describes the decade’s look as “more-is-more,” while its contemporary interpretation is more toned down. Prepare your skin and apply a comfortable base

Sweep blush high toward the temples
Apply pink or plum blush high on the cheeks, then blend outward and upward toward the temples. Charlotte Tilbury’s tutorial describes draping blush from the apples toward the temples; Central Casting’s screen-style guidance places it from the cheek hollow toward the temple. Start lightly and build until the color is as prominent as you want.

Add vivid eyeshadow
Choose a bright pink, blue, or purple shadow and sweep it across the lid. For more dimension, blend a deeper shade into the crease and outward. Charlotte Tilbury demonstrates a pink base with a deep purple blown-out crease. The e.l.f. Cosmetics guide says primer can help intensify color.

Define the lash lines and add mascara
Use dark or colorful eyeliner along the upper and lower lash lines, then apply mascara. For a high-impact finish, make the liner heavier or smudge it; for a cleaner modern look, keep the line more precise.

Keep the brows full
Shape and brush the brows into a full appearance rather than thinning them out. L’Oréal Paris also calls out fuller brows in its modern ’80s interpretation.

Finish with a statement lip
Choose red, pink, fuchsia, or berry lipstick, or try a frosted finish. Use lip liner if you want a more defined outline.

What eyeshadow palette should you use?
