To move an image in Canva, select it and drag it to a new position. If the image is inside a frame or grid, select Crop—or double-click the image—then drag the photo inside the frame to change which part is visible. These are different actions: the first moves the image element, while the second moves the photo within a fixed shape.

Move an image on the Canva page
On desktop
- Open your Canva design.
- Click the image once. A selection outline and handles should appear around the whole image.
- Drag the selected image to its new location.
- Release it when Canva’s dotted alignment guides show the placement you want.
- To resize it, drag a corner handle. This generally preserves the image’s proportions better than dragging a side handle.
Dragging a normal image changes its position on the page; it does not change the contents of the photograph. Canva’s alignment guides help you line an element up with the page, its center, edges, or nearby objects. See Canva’s alignment guide for an explanation of the dotted guides.
On mobile
- Tap the image to select it.
- Drag it with one finger to the desired position.
- Use the handles to resize it.
- Use the bottom toolbar or the overflow menu for options such as Crop, layer order, locking, or positioning. The exact controls can vary between the iOS and Android apps, account types, and design formats.
If nearby objects make selection difficult, zoom in or temporarily move the overlapping object. Canva documents separate desktop and mobile editing workflows, so toolbar locations may not match exactly. Its editing help covers related selection, crop, and position controls.

Move a photo inside a frame or grid
A Canva frame has two parts: the frame itself, which controls the shape and boundary, and the photo inside it. Selecting and dragging the frame moves the entire frame. To change the photo’s composition without moving the frame:
- Double-click the framed image, or select it and choose Crop.
- Drag the photo inside the frame until the subject is positioned correctly.
- Use the crop or zoom controls if you need to show more or less of the photo.
- Click outside the frame or choose Done, if Canva displays that control.
For example, if a portrait’s face is cut off in a circular frame, do not drag the circle to another part of the page. Enter crop mode and move the portrait inside the circle. Canva’s guidance on combining images and its editor help describe this type of frame-specific adjustment.
Move an image in front of or behind another object
Sometimes an image seems impossible to move because another element is covering it. Changing its layer order is different from changing its position:

- Select the image, if possible.
- Open Position or the layer controls.
- Choose the available command to bring it forward, send it backward, bring it to the front, or send it to the back.
When the image is completely hidden, use the Layers panel when available to select it directly. Layer controls change which object appears on top; they do not change the image’s location on the page. Canva’s editing help includes page settings, guides, and layer-related editor controls. Toolbar labels and locations can change between the web editor, mobile app, and design types.
Move a locked, grouped, or background image
Locked image
If an image does not select or cannot be dragged, look for a lock indicator or lock control in the toolbar. Unlock it if you have permission to edit the design, move it, and lock it again if it should stay fixed.
A page background may not behave like an ordinary image element. Depending on how it was added, you may need to change it through the page or background controls, replace it, or select it through the Layers panel rather than dragging it directly.

Grouped image
Selecting a group moves all of its objects together. To move only the image, enter the group if Canva allows it, or ungroup the elements and select the image separately. Do not ungroup automatically: it can disrupt alignment and make later editing harder. Regroup the elements afterward if they should remain together.
Move several images together
On desktop, select one image, then hold Shift while selecting additional images or elements. Drag the resulting selection to move it as a unit. Canva documents this multi-selection method in its editing instructions.
Group the selected elements when you expect to move them together repeatedly. Keep them separate when each image needs independent positioning, cropping, or layer control. Mobile selection gestures and grouping controls can differ, so use the controls shown in the app.
Position an image more precisely
For most layouts, alignment guides are enough. For more controlled placement:
- Zoom in when positioning small images or creating equal margins.
- Use Position for page, center, edge, and layer-alignment options where available.
- Use numerical position controls only if your current Canva editor displays them; they are not presented identically in every design type or platform.
- Check the design at its final viewing size, especially for social graphics, thumbnails, and presentations.
Move slowly when an image appears to snap into place. That behavior is usually Canva’s alignment guides helping the element line up with another object or the page. If you need a different location, zoom in and adjust it again rather than assuming the image has changed size or crop.
Move a person or object inside a single photo
A JPEG or PNG containing a person, product, text, and background is normally one flattened image. Dragging it moves the entire file. It does not independently move the person or product inside the photograph.

For that advanced task, Canva’s Magic Grab can identify and isolate parts of an image so they can be moved or resized. Before using an AI editing tool, duplicate the page or keep the original image available. Inspect the result closely, especially around hair, transparent objects, shadows, reflections, text, and overlapping subjects. Moving a subject may require Canva to reconstruct the background, which can produce halos, repeated patterns, distorted details, or broken shadows.

Why your Canva image will not move

When an edit becomes confusing, use Undo. For significant AI or layout changes, duplicate the page or design first so the original arrangement remains available.

How do I move a picture freely in Canva?
Select the image itself, not its frame or group, and drag it to the desired location. Use the alignment guides to line it up with the page or other elements.
How do I move a picture without moving the frame?
