For a more durable painted glass dish, use a paint made for glass and follow its manufacturer’s preparation and curing instructions exactly. Pébéo’s Vitrea 160, for example, requires degreasing, 24 hours of drying, and oven firing. Its maker says properly cured decoration is dishwasher-safe when its recommendations are followed—but no paint makes a dish’s decoration permanent under every condition.
Choose paint with a glass-specific cure schedule
Look for a product explicitly intended for glass and with manufacturer instructions for preparing and curing it. Pébéo Vitrea 160 is a water-based example with a defined oven-curing process. Other glass paints may use different methods, so do not assume Vitrea 160’s timing or temperature applies to them. See Pébéo’s Vitrea 160 product instructions.
Keep paint off food-contact areas
Pébéo instructs users to decorate only surfaces not intended to contact food. On a dish, leave the eating surface and rim unpainted; put decoration on the underside or on an exterior area that will not touch food. The maker’s note about accidental contact does not change this instruction.

How to cure Pébéo Vitrea 160 on a glass dish
- Check whether the dish is oven-safe. Consult the dish maker’s guidance before heating it to 160°C (325°F). Pébéo’s cold-oven procedure is intended to limit thermal shock, but it does not establish that every glass dish can safely be heated to that temperature.
- Degrease the glass. Clean the area to be painted with alcohol or soapy water, as Pébéo directs, and let it dry. Grease or other residue can undermine the result.
- Apply the paint. Keep it off food-contact surfaces and follow the paint’s own application directions.
- Let the paint dry thoroughly for 24 hours. Pébéo says, “It is important to allow the paint to dry thoroughly for 24 hours before firing.” Incomplete drying can cause water in the paint film to boil during firing, producing bubbles or blisters. Read the Pébéo FAQ on firing and drying.
- Fire from a cold oven. Put the decorated dish in the oven while it is cold. Once the oven reaches 160°C (325°F), fire for 40 minutes.
- Let it cool in the oven. Leave the dish inside as the oven cools; Pébéo says this helps limit thermal shock. Its full instructions are on the Vitrea 160 product page.
What “dishwasher-safe” means here
Pébéo says Vitrea 160 decoration is dishwasher-safe when its recommendations are followed. The claim is conditional, not a promise of permanent, chip-proof decoration or unlimited dishwasher life. The maker identifies inadequate preparation, diluting the paint with water, and incorrect firing time or temperature as possible reasons for poor dishwasher performance. Common causes of a disappointing finish
- Paint lifts or washes away: the glass may not have been adequately degreased, or firing conditions may not have followed the product instructions.
- Bubbles or blisters appear: the paint may not have dried fully before firing.
- Decoration does not hold up in the dishwasher: Pébéo points to missed preparation, added water, or an incorrect firing time or temperature as possible causes.
- The dish cracks in the oven: the dish may not be suitable for the firing temperature. A cold start and slow in-oven cooling reduce thermal shock according to Pébéo, but cannot guarantee an arbitrary dish will tolerate oven heat.
