For a durable cabinet finish, remove grease, prepare the existing surface for the primer you choose, then apply a cabinet-appropriate paint in thin, even coats. Sanding is not a universal requirement: it depends on the cabinet’s current finish and the coating system. Work in this order—plan, remove, clean, repair, prepare, prime, paint, and allow the finish to cure before putting everything back.
1. Decide what to paint and set up the work area
Choose whether you want to paint only the visible cabinet exteriors or the interiors as well. Benjamin Moore describes painting interiors as a matter of preference, often chosen for glass-front or open cabinets or for a more uniform look. If you paint inside, arrange a place for dishes and stored items while the finish dries and cures.

Remove cabinet doors and hardware so you can reach the surfaces cleanly. Keep each door, its hardware, and any screws organized so reassembly is straightforward. Protect counters, floors, appliances, and nearby surfaces before beginning. Sherwin-Williams starts its cabinet process by removing doors and hardware: Sherwin-Williams cabinet-painting guide.
2. Clean, inspect, and repair the cabinets
Kitchen cabinets collect cooking oils and residue, so clean them thoroughly with a suitable cleaner-degreaser. Both Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore stress cleaning or degreasing before painting. Rinse if the cleaner’s directions require it, then let the surfaces dry completely; primer and paint need a clean, dry surface.

Inspect the doors and cabinet frames for holes, dents, and other defects. Fill them with an appropriate wood filler or putty, let the repair dry as directed, and smooth it so it sits flush with the surrounding surface. Remove sanding dust before moving on.
3. Prepare the existing finish—sanding depends on the surface
There is no single sand-or-don’t-sand rule for every cabinet. The right preparation depends on whether the surface is raw wood, previously painted, stained or clear-coated wood, or laminate—and on the primer and topcoat system you plan to use.

| Existing cabinet surface | Preparation to consider |
|---|---|
| Clean, paintable surface | Sherwin-Williams says its primer adhesion test may show sanding is unnecessary on some clean, paintable surfaces. Test an inconspicuous prepared spot before treating all the cabinets. |
| Previously painted surface | Sherwin-Williams’ FAQ recommends sanding previously painted cabinets to promote adhesion. Follow the directions for your chosen coating system. |
| Stained or clear-coated wood | Sherwin-Williams advises cleaning and sanding to bare wood before using an alkyd wood primer; this can help address bleed-through. |
| Laminate | Use a primer and coating system whose manufacturer specifies compatibility with laminate; Benjamin Moore names STIX Waterborne Bonding Primer for wood or laminate cabinet interiors. |
These are manufacturer recommendations, not a universal rule or a head-to-head product comparison. Sherwin-Williams recommends testing primer adhesion on a small, inconspicuous area before proceeding across all cabinets. Its painting application FAQ also discusses sanding previously painted surfaces.
If old paint may contain lead, do not sand or scrape until you have determined what precautions apply. Sherwin-Williams warns that “Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead.” Follow applicable local health guidance and use suitable protection, containment, and cleanup procedures.

4. Prime with a product suited to the surface
Choose a primer compatible with the cabinet material and the paint you intend to use, and follow that primer’s label and technical instructions. Before priming every cabinet, Sherwin-Williams recommends testing Extreme Bond Primer on a prepared, inconspicuous area to check adhesion.
For its described system, Sherwin-Williams says to let the primer dry for at least 24 hours, then lightly sand it with very fine-grit sandpaper and remove the dust. That timing applies to its guide’s system; it is not an instruction for every primer. Benjamin Moore recommends an even coat of STIX Waterborne Bonding Primer for wood or laminate cabinet interiors and says to let it dry completely.

5. Apply cabinet paint with a brush and roller—or spray carefully
Select a durable paint intended for cabinets or trim, and choose a sheen based on the product’s approved uses and the appearance you want. Sherwin-Williams names Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in gloss, semi-gloss, or satin as a cabinet, door, and trim topcoat option. Benjamin Moore names ADVANCE Interior paint and INSL-X Cabinet Coat as options for cabinet interiors. These are their manufacturers’ recommendations; the sources do not establish a best product through independent comparison.
For brush-and-roller application
- Use an angled brush on recessed panels, corners, and other detailed areas first.
- Roll broad, flat areas with a fine-finish mini roller, using even strokes and a light touch.
- Watch for drips and heavy edges, and smooth overlaps while the paint is still workable according to its directions.
Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore both describe using a brush for details and a roller on flat areas. A fine-finish mini roller is useful for those broad cabinet panels.
If you choose to spray
Benjamin Moore lists spraying as an optional application method. Use a sprayer only if you can operate it responsibly and follow the paint and equipment safety instructions; Benjamin Moore advises that sprayers are best used outdoors or in a garage. Maintain appropriate ventilation and protect surrounding surfaces from overspray.
6. Follow the product’s recoat time
Wait for the maximum recoat time stated on the paint can or its technical documentation. Dry-to-recoat timing differs by product: Sherwin-Williams’ homeowner guide says to wait about 24–48 hours before applying its second coat in the system it describes, while Benjamin Moore says ADVANCE can take up to 16 hours to dry before recoating. Do not transfer either figure to a different paint; conditions and product instructions matter.
7. Let the finish cure before returning items
A coat that is dry enough to recoat or handle is not necessarily fully cured. Benjamin Moore gives three to five days as the optimal cure time for ADVANCE on cabinet interiors and warns that returning items before full cure can damage the surface. Cure time varies with the product and conditions, so use the paint’s label or technical instructions to decide when to reinstall hardware, close doors, and put dishes or stored items back.
