For hard-plastic fishing lures, clean and lightly scuff glossy plastic, apply a thin plastic-compatible primer, then add color in light layers and protect the dry finish with a compatible clear coat. Soft-plastic baits need a flexible coating system made for plastisol or soft PVC; a rigid primer-and-epoxy approach may crack or interfere with the bait’s flexibility. You do not need an airbrush, but it gives better control over fades and gradients.
Choose a paint system for the lure material
Start by identifying whether the lure is a rigid hard-plastic blank or a flexible soft-plastic bait. The coating has to suit the substrate: flexible baits must remain flexible, so do not assume a system intended for hard surfaces will work on plastisol or soft PVC.
- Hard plastic: A plastic-compatible primer, water-based acrylic color, and compatible clear coat form a practical starting system. Check the product label or technical sheet for the plastics it supports.
- Soft plastic: Use color and a protective finish explicitly formulated for soft plastic. A LureWorks ICAST demonstration shows thin airbrushed color, flexible PVC eyes, and a Clearasol plastisol dip for a glossy, dimensional finish: LureWorks ICAST soft-bait demonstration.
Test the whole combination—primer, color, and clear—on a spare or hidden area first. Plastic formulations and clear-coat solvents vary, and a test helps reveal poor adhesion or an incompatible finish before you paint the lure itself.

Prepare and prime a hard-plastic lure
- Remove dirt, oil, and release agents. Clean the lure thoroughly and let it dry. Rust-Oleum’s plastic-primer guidance calls for thorough cleaning and notes that glossy or smooth surfaces may need sanding: Rust-Oleum plastic-primer guidance.
- Scuff glossy plastic lightly. The aim is to give the coating a mechanical key, not to reshape the lure. PPG also emphasizes cleaning bare plastic and applying an adhesion promoter before an undercoat: PPG Refinish plastic preparation guidance.
- Apply a thin coat of plastic primer. Choose a primer whose label includes the lure’s plastic. Rust-Oleum advises one thin coat for best adhesion rather than one heavy coat or multiple coats; its guidance lists polypropylene, polystyrene, resin, PVC, fiberglass, and vinyl among intended plastics: Rust-Oleum plastic-primer guidance.
- Let the primer dry as directed. Follow the product label before adding color; drying and recoat times depend on the specific product and conditions.
Apply color, from base coat to pattern
Start with a useful base
A white undercoat can help bright and fluorescent colors show clearly. CS Coatings describes its Water Base White as both a primer and reflective undercoat for fluorescent colors: CS Coatings water-based lure-paint guidance. Treat that as product-specific guidance, not a requirement for every paint system.

Brush, marker, or airbrush?
A brush or paint marker can handle simple blocks of color and small details without an airbrush. An airbrush is more useful for smooth fades, gradients, and controlled transparent shading. Water-based acrylics can be brushed or airbrushed when the surface has been properly prepared.
For Createx Airbrush Colors, the technical sheet recommends a 0.5 mm-or-larger airbrush tip and 30+ psi. Those are Createx product instructions, not universal settings for all paints or airbrushes: Createx Colors technical data sheet.

Build the pattern in light layers
Apply opaque color where you need solid coverage, then add pearl, iridescent, or transparent colors where the design calls for them. Keep layers thin and allow each one to dry according to its label. Avoid using a heavy solvent-based coating on an unidentified plastic: compatibility can vary.

Protect the paint from chipping
Paint alone leaves a film exposed to handling and water. Use a clear coat that is compatible with both the paint and the lure material, and let the color dry thoroughly first. Createx’s technical sheet specifically recommends an epoxy clear for its Airbrush Colors on fishing lures and other marine applications: Createx Colors technical data sheet. That recommendation applies to the named paint system; it does not establish that every epoxy is suitable for every plastic.

For soft baits, choose a flexible protective finish designed for that material rather than assuming a hard-bait epoxy will remain sound. The LureWorks demonstration uses a Clearasol plastisol dip to create a glossy protective finish on its soft bait: LureWorks ICAST soft-bait demonstration.
- Mask clear diving lips and hardware before painting so they remain free of overspray and coating.
- Keep primer, color, and clear layers thin; follow each product’s drying and curing directions.
- Use ventilation and protective equipment specified by the product label or safety sheet.
What paint sticks to plastic fishing lures?
There is no single paint that can be assumed to stick to every lure plastic. On a prepared hard-plastic lure, water-based acrylic color can work when paired with appropriate surface preparation and compatible primer and clear coat. On a flexible soft-plastic bait, use a system made for plastisol or soft PVC. Product compatibility, rather than the word “plastic” alone, should guide the choice.

Do you need to prime before painting?
For bare, glossy hard plastic, cleaning, light abrasion where appropriate, and a plastic primer or adhesion-promoter system can improve the conditions for adhesion. Follow the primer maker’s instructions for the specific plastic; do not add a rigid primer to a soft bait unless the product is intended for that use.
What results should you expect?
Manufacturers provide application guidance, but the sources cited here do not establish a measured adhesion percentage, service life, or catch-rate advantage for a particular color or pattern. A bright base can help fluorescent paint appear more vivid, but no pattern is proven here to catch more fish universally.
