To try Midjourney V7, open the Create page, confirm V7 in the version setting, and enter a clear image prompt in the Imagine bar. Use Draft Mode to explore ideas, select images you like to shape your Personalization profile, and curate finished work in your profile’s Spotlight—checking visibility before you feature anything.
V7 is no longer the default: Midjourney’s Version documentation says V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. V7 launched on April 3, 2025, and was the default through June 9, 2026. Check the version setting because capabilities and behavior vary by model.

- Open Create and select V7. The Imagine bar is where you enter a prompt. Confirm the version setting before generating; V7 is not the current default.
- Describe the image clearly. Start with the subject and scene, then add useful direction such as lighting, color, mood, or composition. Midjourney’s Prompt Basics recommends short, simple prompts and clear phrases.
- Generate and review the results. Treat the prompt as guidance, not a guarantee that every detail will appear exactly as requested.
- Iterate on what matters. If you want a different composition, lighting, or color direction, make that instruction clearer and try again.
Choose between standard generation and Draft Mode
Draft Mode is useful when you want to explore an idea before spending more GPU time on a standard generation. Midjourney’s Draft & Conversational Modes documentation says a V7 Draft prompt produces four images at half the GPU cost of a standard V7 prompt. When a draft looks promising, use Enhance to create a similar set at standard GPU cost; you can also upscale a draft.

Use an image as a prompt reference
An image prompt can influence a new image’s content, composition, and colors. Midjourney’s Image Prompts documentation describes it as inspiration for a new creation, not an instruction to reproduce the reference exactly. For V7, the documented image-weight default is 1, with a supported range of 0–3.
Use a reference when its visual direction is useful, then describe the new image you want in your prompt. If you upload an image to Midjourney’s Editor, its Editor documentation says you must have the necessary rights to use it.

Give feedback through Personalization
To shape the aesthetic of your recommendations and generations, select images you like in the Global V7 Profile. Midjourney’s Personalization documentation says selecting more images gives the profile more information. Likes on Explore can also influence the Global Profile.
This feedback helps describe your aesthetic preferences; it is not a direct critique control that corrects a particular image. Choose images that reflect the look you want the profile to learn, rather than treating each selection as an edit request.

Showcase creations in Spotlight
- Choose finished work. Select images that make sense together as a small, intentional collection.
- Review visibility first. Check whether each item is private before adding it to your profile.
- Curate Spotlight. Use the profile’s Spotlight tab to feature favorite creations.
Midjourney’s Profiles documentation warns that selecting a private image, banner, or video for a profile, banner, or Spotlight automatically makes it public. Other images or videos in the same grid may become public too. Check the grid and visibility of the work before featuring it.
Privacy and responsibility
Midjourney’s Terms of Service, effective May 27, 2026, say users are responsible for content they input or generate. Before uploading or editing external images, make sure you have the necessary rights; Midjourney’s Editor documentation specifically puts that responsibility on the user. Check current Midjourney settings and terms before sharing work you do not intend to make public.

How many images does V7 Draft Mode make?

Does an image prompt copy its reference exactly?
No. An image prompt can influence content, composition, and color, but it guides a new creation rather than guaranteeing an exact copy, according to Midjourney’s Image Prompts documentation.

Does liking an image directly fix or retrain a specific result?
No. Selecting or liking images helps shape your Global V7 Personalization Profile’s aesthetic preferences; it is not a direct correction control for one output.
Can Spotlight make a private image public?
Yes. Midjourney’s Profiles documentation says selecting a private item for your profile, banner, or Spotlight makes it public, along with other images or videos in the same grid. Check visibility before featuring work.
Bottom line
Select V7 deliberately, use clear prompts, and explore with Draft Mode before refining a promising idea. Shape Personalization by selecting images you like, then curate Spotlight only after checking whether the featured work—and other items in its grid—will become public.
