Prepare walls in this order: inspect, remove failing paint, clean and rinse, dry completely, repair defects, sand or smooth where needed, remove dust, prime the surfaces that need it, then protect the room. Skipping those stages is the usual cause of peeling, blistering, visible patches, uneven sheen and wallpaper seams showing through. A sound wall may need only dusting, washing and a few repairs; a greasy kitchen, stained wall, new drywall, plaster, masonry or wallpaper needs a different treatment. This guide explains the decision at each stage so you can stop when the surface is genuinely clean, solid, dry and smooth.

What does proper wall preparation accomplish?

Preparation gives paint a stable surface to bond to and removes defects that a finish coat cannot hide. Sherwin-Williams summarizes the target as a surface that is “clean, solid and dry, without cracks and imperfections.” Paint is not a filler for loose coatings, dust, grease, dampness, deep dents or moving cracks.

Use strong, angled light while inspecting. Raking light reveals ridges and depressions that disappear under ordinary ceiling light but become obvious after the new color dries. Mark each defect with painter’s tape or a pencil so repairs are not lost while you clean.

  • Clean: free of dust, cobwebs, soap film, grease and loose residue.
  • Solid: no bubbling, flaking, powdery areas or soft substrate.
  • Dry: no dampness from washing, leaks, condensation or uncured plaster and masonry.
  • Smooth: repairs feathered into the surrounding wall, with no raised edges or sanding dust.

If you find active water intrusion, widespread mildew, crumbling plaster or a crack that keeps reopening, correct that underlying problem before cosmetic preparation. Paint over a symptom will fail again.

How do I inspect a wall before painting?

Walk the entire wall in bright light before opening a paint can. Run a clean hand over suspicious areas: a chalky film, softness, raised edge or gritty texture signals a different preparation step than ordinary dust.

Check the coating

Look for loose, bubbling, cracked or flaking paint; glossy patches; old brush ridges; and areas where several colors overlap. Test questionable edges with a rigid putty knife. If the knife slips under the coating, that material must be removed rather than buried under new paint.

Check the substrate

On drywall, note nail pops, screw depressions, dents, torn paper and open joints. On plaster, look for powder, loose keys, protrusions and cracks. Masonry may show efflorescence, damp spots or mortar defects. Wallpaper requires a separate decision because seams and texture can telegraph through paint.

Check contamination and risk

Kitchen walls often carry an invisible grease film. Smoke, crayons, ink, water marks and mildew can bleed through ordinary wall paint. Older coatings may contain lead; scraping or sanding can create hazardous dust. If the building or paint age makes lead plausible, use the applicable local lead-safe containment, cleanup and respiratory-protection requirements instead of dry-sanding casually.

What should I remove before washing?

Remove only material that is not firmly attached, and feather the boundary so a ridge does not remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Protect yourself and the room. Ventilate, wear eye protection and use a suitable dust mask or respirator for the material and task. Keep children and pets out of the work area.
  2. Scrape loose coating. Hold a rigid putty knife nearly flat and lift bubbling or flaking paint. Do not gouge sound drywall paper.
  3. Feather the edge. Use a fine-grit sanding sponge to taper the transition from bare area to intact paint.
  4. Collect debris. Vacuum with appropriate filtration or use controlled wet cleanup where lead-safe procedures require it. Do not sweep dry chips into the air.

Sherwin-Williams specifically warns that old paint can create lead dust when scraped or sanded. If the wall has broad failure rather than a few isolated chips, assess whether professional abatement or more extensive removal is safer than spot work.

Do I need to wash walls before painting?

Usually, yes. Benjamin Moore calls clean walls “key” to preparation. Washing removes the thin film that prevents adhesion, even when a wall looks clean. Always remove dry dust first so you do not turn it into muddy residue.

Routine cleaning

  1. Dust cobwebs, ceiling lines, corners, baseboards and around switches with a dry microfiber cloth or vacuum brush.
  2. Mix lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap in a bucket.
  3. Wipe a manageable section with a cellulose sponge or cloth, working from top to bottom.
  4. Rinse with clean water so soap does not remain as a bond-breaking film.
  5. Allow the wall to dry fully before filling, sanding or priming.

Grease, smoke and stubborn residue

Use a grease-cutting detergent or degreaser on kitchen splash zones and other oily surfaces. Follow its label, then rinse repeatedly with clean water. Smoke film and heavy soil may require more than one cleaning pass. Do not assume primer can compensate for residue; stain-blocking primer is a barrier after cleaning, not a substitute for it.

Mildew and dampness

Find and correct the moisture source before painting. Clean biological growth using a product and procedure appropriate to the surface and local safety guidance, then let the wall dry completely. Painting a damp wall can cause blistering, a failure Benjamin Moore cautions against. Do not seal active leaks or wet masonry behind a new coating.

How do I fill holes, dents and cracks in drywall?

Use spackling or patching compound for small cosmetic damage, apply it in thin passes, and sand only after it has dried. A thick blob often shrinks, cracks or remains visible under side light.

Small nail holes and dents

  1. Remove loose fibers and dust from the defect.
  2. Press compound into the hole with a flexible putty knife, leaving the surface slightly proud.
  3. For a deeper depression, let the first pass dry and add another thin pass rather than one heavy application.
  4. When fully dry, sand or smooth the repair flush with the wall.
  5. Wipe or vacuum all dust before primer.

Small cracks

Open a hairline crack slightly if necessary to remove loose material, then fill it with a compatible compound. Feather several inches beyond the crack so the repair does not look like a raised stripe. If the crack follows a joint, reappears after drying or is wider and moving, investigate framing or structural movement instead of repeatedly spackling.

Larger holes and damaged paper

Use a patch kit or mesh for holes that cannot be bridged by compound alone. Cut ragged edges back to sound material, install the patch according to its instructions, cover with compound in multiple thin coats, and feather the perimeter. Torn drywall paper must be stabilized and sealed as appropriate; painting directly over fuzzy, loose paper can produce bubbling.

When to use caulk

Paintable acrylic caulk is useful for narrow trim-to-wall gaps and stationary joints, not for broad drywall cracks or holes. Tool a thin bead, allow it to cure as directed and prime if the product or paint system calls for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I sand before painting?

Sand where it improves adhesion or levels a repair; do not sand every wall automatically. The purpose is to dull gloss and remove ridges, not to remove a sound coating or create airborne dust.

Repairs and ordinary previously painted walls

Use a fine-grit sanding sponge or paper to feather spackle edges and flatten nibs. Sanding between coats of compound may be necessary for a seamless surface. Remove dust with a vacuum and damp microfiber cloth, then wait until the wall is dry.

Glossy surfaces

Previously painted glossy or high-gloss areas need a dull, uniformly abraded profile so the next coat can grip. Benjamin Moore guidance uses fine-grit paper for previously painted water-based paint and 100–150 grit for oil-based paint. Confirm the existing coating and follow the paint and primer manufacturer’s compatibility directions; a bonding primer may be preferable to aggressive abrasion on delicate surfaces.

New plaster is different

Benjamin Moore’s technical data sheet for ben Premium Interior Latex Eggshell Finish W626, published August 7, 2018, says never to sand plaster. Knife off protrusions, allow plaster to cure, clean it and use the specified treatment for soft, porous or powdery areas. Sanding uncured plaster can damage the surface and create a weak layer beneath the paint.

What is the correct preparation for new drywall?

New drywall needs more than a quick coat of paint because joint compound and paper absorb paint differently. The result otherwise can be flashing: repaired areas show as dull or shiny patches after the finish dries.

  1. Confirm panels are secure and fasteners are set without tearing the paper.
  2. Make sure taped joints, inside corners and screw heads are fully filled and dry.
  3. Sand or smooth compound transitions without gouging the paper.
  4. Remove every trace of sanding dust.
  5. Prime the entire surface with a drywall-appropriate primer or sealer, not just the joints, when uniform appearance matters.
  6. Inspect under raking light and repair any remaining ridges before finish coats.

Spot-priming only the compound can leave different porosity and sheen across the wall. A consistent primer coat is generally the safer choice on a whole new drywall surface.

How should I prepare plaster and masonry?

Plaster

New plaster must be clean and completely cured. Follow the coating manufacturer’s cure requirements; do not trap residual moisture beneath latex paint. Soft, porous or powdery plaster needs a compatible conditioner or primer specified for that problem. Remove protrusions with a knife rather than sanding, in line with Benjamin Moore’s technical guidance.

Masonry

New masonry commonly needs about 30 days of curing before coating under Sherwin-Williams guidance. That source notes a shorter seven-day path may be possible when a masonry primer designed for the condition is used. Treat those as product-system requirements, not universal guarantees: verify the exact substrate, weather exposure and primer label before painting. Remove salts, dust and loose mortar, and do not coat masonry that is still damp.

When do I need primer before painting?

Primer is needed where paint would otherwise soak unevenly, fail to hide contamination or struggle to bond. It is not automatically required over every sound, clean, previously painted wall in a similar color and sheen.

Surface or problem Recommended approach Reason
Bare drywall or exposed paper Prime the area; use a consistent coat on new drywall when sheen uniformity matters Balances porosity and reduces flashing
Fresh spackling or patching compound Spot-prime small repairs, or prime the whole wall for the most uniform appearance Compound absorbs finish paint differently
Water, smoke, ink, pencil or grease stain Clean first, then use a stain-blocking or problem-surface primer Ordinary wall paint may allow bleed-through
Major color change Use a compatible primer or tinted system as advised by the paint maker Improves hiding and reduces finish-coat variation
Glossy or uncertain coating Dull the surface and/or use a bonding primer after cleaning Improves adhesion
Sound, clean, dull wall in a similar color Primer may be unnecessary; confirm on a test area Existing coating already provides a stable base

Spot primer can itself show through as a different sheen. If the wall will receive a low-sheen finish under strong light, a uniform primer coat is often worth the extra material. Test primer and paint together on an inconspicuous area to check adhesion, color and compatibility before committing to the room.

Can I paint over wallpaper?

Remove wallpaper whenever practical. Benjamin Moore warns that paint will not reliably hide wallpaper seams or heavy texture, and adhesive residue can interfere with adhesion.

  2. Wash off adhesive residue.
  3. Rinse with clean water and let the wall dry completely.
  4. Repair torn paper, dents and seam damage.
  5. Prime before painting, especially where adhesive or porous substrate remains.

Painting over firmly bonded, smooth wallpaper is a compromise, not a way to erase seams. If removal would damage historic plaster or a fragile substrate, test a small area and use a sealer designed for the specific adhesive and wall condition; expect texture or seams to remain visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I protect the room before painting?

Protection prevents a clean wall from being re-contaminated and makes cutting in safer.

  • Remove switch plates, outlet covers, curtain hardware and other detachable items; store screws in labeled bags.
  • Move furniture to the center and cover it. Leave a clear working path around every wall.
  • Cover floors with drop cloths. Canvas absorbs drips and can be reused; plastic and paper cost less but can slide.
  • Clean and dry trim before applying painter’s tape. Press tape edges firmly with a clean putty knife for a crisp line.
  • Keep a damp cloth for immediate spills, but do not wipe a repaired wall until its compound and primer are dry.

Caulk narrow trim gaps before final cleaning if needed, then allow it to cure. Tape is a mask, not a substitute for careful brush control; remove it according to the tape instructions before the paint forms a hard ridge.

Which tools and materials do I need?

Task Useful tools or materials Selection notes
Dust and washing Bucket, lukewarm water, mild dish soap, cellulose sponge, microfiber cloths or rags Use clean rinse water; avoid leaving soap film
Heavy soil Grease-cutting detergent or degreaser Rinse thoroughly after use
Scraping and repairs Rigid and flexible putty knives, spackling compound, patch kit or mesh Choose a patch system sized to the hole
Smoothing Fine-grit paper or sanding sponge; a 100-grit sanding sponge is listed by DAP Benjamin Moore guidance specifies 100–150 grit for oil-based previously painted surfaces
Priming Interior primer/sealer; problem-surface or stain-blocking formula where required Match primer to substrate and contaminant
Protection Painter’s tape, canvas or plastic drop cloths, floor covering Canvas is reusable and less prone to sliding
Application Paint tray, roller covers, angled brush, extension pole, ladder, acrylic caulk and caulk gun Sherwin-Williams specifies 3/8–1/2-inch nap for smooth surfaces and 1/2–1-inch nap for rough or stippled surfaces

What is the final pre-paint checklist?

Do not start the finish coat until the wall passes each check below in strong, angled light.

  • No loose, bubbling or flaking paint remains.
  • Grease, dust, soap and cleaning residue are gone.
  • The wall and every repair feel fully dry.
  • Holes, dents and cracks are filled and feathered flush.
  • Glossy sections are dulled or treated with a compatible bonding primer.
  • Sanding dust has been vacuumed and wiped away.
  • Bare, porous, stained and repaired areas have the appropriate primer.
  • Wallpaper adhesive and seams have been removed or deliberately accepted as a visible compromise.
  • Trim, floors, furniture and hardware are protected.
  • A small test area confirms adhesion, color and sheen before the whole wall is painted.

Touch the wall with clean fingertips: it should feel dry and dust-free, not tacky, gritty or chalky. If a defect is visible now, the finish coat will usually make it more noticeable rather than hide it.

What preparation mistakes cause paint to fail?

Painting onto damp surfaces

Moisture can cause blistering and weak adhesion. Extend drying time after washing, repairs or humid weather, and resolve leaks or condensation first.

Painting over cracked or loose paint

Benjamin Moore describes painting over cracked paint as a bad idea. New coating follows the unstable layer and soon cracks or peels with it.

Leaving cleaner or degreaser behind

Residue can repel paint and create fisheyes or uneven sheen. Rinse with clean water and let the surface dry.

Using one heavy repair coat

Thick compound shrinks and dries unevenly. Several thin applications produce a flatter, more controllable repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Over-sanding drywall paper

Gouging or fuzzing the paper creates a larger repair and can make the surface absorb primer unevenly. Use light pressure and stop when the transition is flush.

Spot-priming without checking sheen

A small primed patch may flash under the finish. For prominent walls or low-sheen paint, prime consistently across the wall.

Expecting paint to hide wallpaper seams

Seams and texture remain physical high points. Remove the covering or accept that the pattern may still telegraph through.

How do I choose a preparation path for my wall?

Wall condition Minimum sensible sequence Main risk to control
Sound, previously painted and low-sheen Dust, wash, dry, fill minor defects, lightly smooth repairs, spot-prime as needed Skipping cleaning or leaving repair edges visible
Glossy previously painted wall Wash and rinse, dry, dull the sheen, remove dust, use bonding primer if required Poor adhesion and peeling
Greasy kitchen wall Degrease, rinse repeatedly, dry, repair, stain/problem-prime, then paint Residue causing fisheyes or bleed-through
New drywall Finish joints, dry, smooth, remove dust, prime consistently, inspect in raking light Flashing and visible joint lines
New or soft plaster Cure fully, knife off protrusions, clean, use specified plaster treatment, then prime Trapped moisture or powdery substrate
New masonry Meet cure period, remove salts and dust, use masonry primer where the system requires it Moisture and alkalinity undermining the coating
Wallpapered wall Remove, wash adhesive, rinse, dry, repair, prime Seams and texture telegraphing through
Stained or smoke-damaged wall Clean source residue, dry, apply stain-blocking primer, test, then finish Stain bleed-through

This matrix is a stopping rule: once your wall meets the relevant row’s conditions and passes the final checklist, additional sanding or washing adds risk without improving the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should walls dry after washing before painting?

There is no reliable universal hour count because drying depends on water amount, ventilation, humidity, temperature and wall porosity. Wait until the surface is uniformly dry to the touch and any joints, patches or porous areas have dried through; increase ventilation and time rather than trapping moisture under primer.

Can I use ceiling paint as a wall primer?

Ceiling paint is a finish coating, not automatically a sealer for bare drywall, stains or glossy surfaces. Use a primer labeled for the substrate or problem, then apply the selected wall finish according to its technical instructions.

How can I tell whether old wall paint is oil-based?

A small solvent test in an inconspicuous spot can help, but solvent handling and lead concerns make guesswork risky. If the coating is unknown and adhesion matters, clean it, dull the sheen and use a compatible bonding primer after confirming the product system with the manufacturer.

What should I do if a repaired spot keeps showing after painting?

Stop adding finish coats and inspect the spot under angled light. Confirm that the repair is flush, dust-free and fully dry, then apply a compatible primer; if the outline remains, skim a wider area with compound, smooth the transition and reprime consistently.
