Prepare the wall before opening a paint tin: inspect it, fix any moisture, remove loose coatings, clean and dry the surface, fill and sand defects, remove every trace of dust, prime as needed, and test a small area. The finish will only be as durable as the surface underneath it. A wall that is clean, solid and dry gives new paint a stable base; dampness, mould, powdery residue, peeling paint or unsanded putty can make the fresh coat fail quickly. This Diwali-focused guide takes you through the complete sequence, including what to do with seepage, mould, glossy paint, dark colours, wallpaper and repaired patches.

What condition should a wall be in before a Diwali repaint?
It should be clean, solid, dry and free of unresolved defects. Sherwin-Williams expresses the basic standard this way: “A properly prepared surface is clean, solid and dry, without cracks and imperfections.” New paint is not a cure for an active leak, loose film, mould growth or a dusty, powdery substrate.

- Repair the moisture source before cosmetic work.
- Protect furniture, floors, trim, switches, handles, windows and door frames.
- Scrape away loose paint and powdery material until the remaining coating is firm.
- Wash off dust, cobwebs, grease and stains, then rinse where the cleaner requires it.

- Sand dried repairs smooth and dull glossy areas when required.
- Remove sanding dust completely.
- Prime repaired, bare, porous or dark areas with a product compatible with the finish paint.
- Paint an inconspicuous test patch and check the result after the label-specified drying period.
Do not start the next operation while the wall is still wet, soft, dusty or shedding material. Product labels govern drying and recoating times; there is no single drying number that applies to every wall, filler or primer.
How do I inspect an old wall before repainting?
Walk around the room in daylight and inspect every wall from floor to ceiling. Look behind furniture, near windows, at corners, around plumbing, below balconies and anywhere a previous coat has failed. Mark each defect with removable tape so repairs are not missed after the room is cleared.
Check for moisture first
Damp patches, seepage, recurring water marks, blistering or a persistent musty area indicate a moisture problem. Stop preparation and find the source—such as a plumbing leak, roof or exterior-wall seepage, condensation or a failed waterproofing detail—before filling or priming. Remove damaged material and let the wall dry fully after the source is repaired. Painting over a wet area only hides the symptom temporarily and can lift the new coating.

Identify the type of surface failure
- Peeling or flaking: the coating is no longer bonded and must be scraped back to firm edges.
- Powdery or chalky film: residue transfers to a finger or cloth and will interfere with adhesion; remove it before filler or primer.
- Cracks and holes: decide whether they are minor cosmetic defects suitable for filler or signs of movement or structural damage that need separate repair.
- Stains: determine whether they are old, dry marks or evidence of continuing dampness.
- Mould: visible growth requires removal and treatment of the moisture condition.
- Glossy paint: a smooth, nonporous film needs light abrasion or the cleaner recommended by the coating manufacturer before priming.
When should you stop and call for another repair?
Do not proceed with ordinary decorating if the wall remains damp, the defect keeps returning, a crack is widening, plaster is hollow or loose, or water is entering from outside. A painter can prepare only a sound substrate; the leak, damaged plaster or structural movement has to be corrected first.
How should I protect the room before sanding and painting?
Protection prevents preparation dust and paint splashes from becoming a second renovation job. Move small furniture out of the room. Move larger pieces to the centre, leave a safe working path around the walls and cover them securely.
- Lay a secured, non-slip floor sheet or drop cloth. Tape or otherwise hold its edges so it cannot slide under a ladder or foot.
- Cover larger furniture completely, including tops and exposed sides.
- Mask trim, switches, handles, window frames and door frames with painter’s tape. Press the tape edge down firmly without covering anything that must remain accessible.
- Remove wall hangings, curtains and loose decorations. Store screws and hooks in a labelled container.
- Keep ventilation available while cleaning, sanding and painting, but prevent dust or insects from blowing onto a wet finish.
- Before washing near switches or outlets, isolate power to the relevant circuit and keep liquid out of electrical fittings. Wipe fittings with a barely damp cloth rather than spraying them.
Diwali decorations, oil lamps and electrical lighting should go back only after the paint system has dried according to its product labels. Keep flames and heat sources away from paint, solvent, dust sheets and freshly coated surfaces.

How do I remove peeling, loose or powdery paint?
Scrape before you fill. Filler and primer cannot make an unsound coating reliable; they will follow the loose layer when it lifts.
Scrape to a firm edge
Use a scraper or putty knife to remove flaking and blistered paint. Work outward from the failure until the remaining film is firmly bonded. Feather a sharp edge rather than leaving a ridge that will show through the new coat. If the exposed substrate crumbles or sounds hollow, stop and repair the substrate instead of covering it.
Deal with chalking and powder
Brush or wipe away powdery material, then wash the area with a mild detergent or suitable wall cleaner. Continue until the cloth no longer picks up loose residue. Rinse if the cleaner’s instructions require it, and allow the wall to dry completely.
Contain hazardous dust
Do not dry-sand an unknown old coating aggressively. Minimise dust, wear suitable eye and respiratory protection, and follow local rules if the building may contain lead or another hazardous material. The preparation sequence remains the same, but hazardous-coating removal requires qualified advice.
How do I clean the wall, and what should I do about mould?
Cleaning removes the invisible layer that prevents adhesion: dust, cobwebs, grease, smoke residue and cleaning salts. Use a mild detergent or a wall cleaner suitable for the substrate. Work from cleaner areas toward dirtier ones so you do not spread grease across the room. Rinse where required and leave the surface completely dry before sanding or priming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMould requires both removal and moisture control
Do not simply seal active mould under new paint. Remove the visible growth, correct the damp condition and dry the wall. The RDSO handbook’s sequence is to scrape or rub the affected area, wash it, dry it and apply a fungicidal treatment before recoating. Follow the treatment label, provide ventilation and use the protective equipment it specifies.

If mould covers a large area, keeps returning after the moisture source is repaired, or affects porous material deeply, obtain professional remediation advice. Painting is the final step, not the treatment itself.
How do I know the wall is dry enough?
It should feel dry and cool rather than clammy, show no active damp patch and leave no moisture on a clean hand or cloth. Check again near plumbing, corners and windows. Do not rely on a fan to conceal ongoing seepage; the source must be fixed first.
Do I need wall putty before primer?
Use interior wall putty or filler where minor holes, cracks, dents, scraped edges and shallow surface irregularities need levelling. You do not need to skim every sound, smooth wall. Putty is for defects and porosity, not a substitute for removing loose paint or solving dampness.
Apply filler in a controlled repair
- Make sure the defect is clean, firm and dry.
- Press filler into the hole or crack with a putty knife, leaving the repair slightly proud if the product directs this.
- Feather the edges into the surrounding wall so there is no abrupt step.
- Allow the filler to dry fully according to its label. Thick applications may need more than one coat; do not sand a soft repair.
Asian Paints’ preparation guidance states, “Before you apply putty or primer you have to sand the wall with sandpaper.” In practice, that means a dried puttied area must be smoothed before primer, and the sanding dust must be removed afterward.
When is filler the wrong solution?
Do not bridge active movement, a recurring water mark, a deep structural crack or loose plaster with ordinary interior putty. Those conditions need a suitable building repair first. Filling over a damp stain or a moving crack merely recreates the defect beneath the paint.
Should I sand a painted wall before applying a fresh coat?
Sand every dried repair and lightly abrade glossy or nonporous paint when the coating manufacturer calls for it. A sound, matt, previously painted wall generally needs cleaning, local repairs, sanding of those repairs, dust removal and spot priming rather than aggressive sanding of the entire surface.

| Existing surface | Preparation before primer or paint | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Sound matt paint | Clean; fill defects; sand repairs; remove dust; prime repaired areas. | Preserves a stable coating while correcting weak spots. |
| Glossy or nonporous paint | Lightly sand to a dull finish, or use the manufacturer’s recommended abrasive cleaner; remove residue. | Improves wetting and adhesion. |
| Dark-coloured wall | Use a compatible primer designed to provide a uniform base, especially over repairs. | Reduces uneven absorption and helps the new colour cover consistently. |
| Porous, bare or heavily repaired wall | Prime the exposed and repaired areas with a compatible interior primer. | Controls absorption and supports adhesion. |
| Peeling or powdery wall | Scrape and clean until firm before any sanding or priming. | Primer cannot stabilise a loose film. |
Choose the abrasive sensibly
Use fine-grit sandpaper for dried putty and a light pass on glossy areas. The objective is a smooth, dull surface, not removal of every millimetre of sound paint. Sanding too aggressively can expose more substrate and create another repair.

Vacuum or wipe the wall with a clean, dry or barely damp method appropriate to the substrate, then allow any moisture to evaporate. Run a clean hand over the surface; if it picks up powder, clean again. Dust left under primer creates a weak, gritty interface.
Which primer should I use, and where is it most important?
Choose a primer labelled for interior walls and compatible with the intended topcoat and substrate. Primer is especially important over putty, bare patches, porous areas, dark colours and large colour changes. It evens absorption, helps the finish bond and prevents repaired spots from flashing differently from the surrounding wall.
Prime the right areas
- Prime every sanded filler repair after dust removal.
- Prime bare plaster, exposed substrate and porous patches.
- Prime dark or strongly stained areas when the product system recommends it for uniformity.
- Prime a glossy wall after it has been dulled or treated with the specified cleaner.
- Use a moisture-resistant system only where the label says it is suitable; do not treat a moisture-resistant primer as a substitute for waterproofing.
Apply without creating new texture
Follow the primer’s spread rate, application method, ventilation and recoat instructions. Keep the film even and avoid heavy ridges at repair edges. Let it dry for the label-specified period before testing or applying the finish coat. Product formulations and drying times vary by manufacturer, temperature, humidity and substrate, so a generic time would be misleading.
How do I handle wallpaper before repainting?
Remove wallpaper when possible. Wash off adhesive residue and let the wall dry before filling, sanding and priming. Painting over wallpaper can leave seams visible or cause bubbling, particularly where paper or adhesive is loose. If removal would damage the substrate, ask the product manufacturer or an experienced painter whether the specific wall covering can be sealed safely; inspect and secure every seam first.
How do I test the preparation before painting the whole room?
A test patch can reveal adhesion, colour and compatibility problems while they are still easy to correct. Choose an inconspicuous area behind furniture or near a low-visibility corner, but make it representative of the wall.

Do not treat a successful patch as proof that a damp or loose area elsewhere is safe; each wall condition still has to be corrected.
What supplies do I need to prepare walls?
Buy for the substrate and the repair scope, not simply the cheapest pack. Product availability and formulations vary, so read each label and confirm that the materials work together.
| Supply | Use | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Interior wall putty or filler | Minor holes, cracks, dents and scraped edges. | Interior suitability, substrate compatibility, application thickness, drying time and pack size. |
| Fine-grit sandpaper | Smoothing dried repairs and dulling glossy areas. | Grit appropriate to the repair, sheet or roll format and dust control. |
| Scraper or putty knife | Removing loose paint and applying filler. | Blade width, rigidity and comfortable control. |
| Compatible interior primer | Sealing putty, bare or porous areas and supporting topcoat adhesion. | Interior use, substrate and topcoat compatibility, coverage, drying time, moisture resistance and pack size. |
| Mild cleaner or suitable wall cleaner | Removing dust, grease, cobwebs and stains. | Compatibility with the existing coating and whether rinsing is required. |
| Painter’s tape | Protecting trim, switches, handles, windows and door frames. | Surface compatibility, clean removal and roll width. |
| Non-slip floor sheet or drop cloth | Protecting floors and containing sanding debris and splashes. | Grip, coverage, liquid resistance and whether it can be secured safely. |
| Cleaning cloths, brush and waste bags | Wiping, brushing residue and containing removed material. | Lint-free cloths and enough capacity for dusty or wet waste. |
What are the most common preparation mistakes, and how do I fix them?
| Symptom | Likely preparation failure | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh paint peels in sheets | Loose old paint, chalking, grease or an incompatible glossy surface remained underneath. | Remove the failed coating to a firm edge, clean, dull the surface if required, prime compatibly and retest. |
| New coat blisters near a window or plumbing line | Seepage or condensation was painted over. | Find and repair the moisture source, remove damaged material, dry fully and restart preparation. |
| Dark or repaired patches show through | Putty or porous substrate absorbed paint unevenly, or primer coverage was insufficient. | Sand any ridges, remove dust and apply a compatible primer to the affected areas before recoating. |
| Rough, gritty finish | Sanding dust remained, or filler was painted before it dried and was smoothed. | Allow the surface to dry, sand smooth, clean thoroughly and test a small area again. |
| Mould returns under the new paint | Only the visible growth was covered; dampness remained. | Remove mould, correct moisture, dry and use the specified fungicidal treatment before recoating. |
| Wallpaper seams or bubbles appear | Wallpaper or adhesive was left unstable beneath the coating. | Remove wallpaper where possible, wash off adhesive, dry, repair and prime before painting. |
| Primer or finish stays tacky or wrinkles | Incompatible layers, excessive film thickness or recoating before the label period. | Stop, check both product labels, test compatibility in a small area and remove or abrade the failed layer as directed. |
How can I stop paint from peeling again after Diwali?
Prevent recurrence by treating the cause rather than adding more coats. Repair seepage and recurring water marks, remove every loose or powdery section, wash away grease and salts, let the substrate dry, sand repairs smooth, remove dust and use a primer compatible with both the wall and the finish paint. The small test patch is your final check that this particular combination of old coating, filler, primer and topcoat behaves as expected.
What is the safest order for a room-by-room Diwali preparation?
Finish one wall or room through inspection and repair before spreading work to the next area. Keep a written note of the product used on each surface, the location of damp repairs and the label instructions for drying and recoating. That record is useful if a defect appears later or if the same paint system is needed for touch-ups.
- Clear and protect the room.
- Inspect and mark defects.
- Resolve moisture and remove damaged material.
- Scrape loose coating and clean the wall.
- Treat mould where present and dry the surface.
- Fill defects and wait for full drying.
- Sand repairs and glossy areas as required.
- Remove all dust.
- Prime compatible areas.
- Apply and evaluate a test patch.
- Only then proceed with the finish coats and reinstall decorations after the paint system has dried as directed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paint over a wall that has only a few small damp spots?
No. Even a small recurring damp spot should be traced to its source and repaired before painting. Remove damaged material and allow the area to dry fully; otherwise the new coating can blister or peel again.
Is one primer suitable for every room and every old paint?
Not necessarily. Primer choice depends on the substrate, whether the area is bare or porous, the existing sheen and the intended topcoat. Check the primer label for interior use and compatibility rather than relying on colour or brand alone.
How do I prepare a wall if I cannot move a large wardrobe?
Move it to the centre far enough to create a safe working path, cover it completely and protect the floor beneath it with a secured non-slip sheet. Tape nearby trim and work in sections so the furniture never rests against wet paint.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can a test patch reveal that old paint and new paint are incompatible?
Yes. A properly prepared, inconspicuous patch can show lifting, bubbling, wrinkling, tackiness or poor adhesion before the full room is committed. Wait the product’s stated drying period and follow its adhesion-check instructions.
What should I do with a crack that keeps reopening after filler?
Treat recurring movement as a separate building repair rather than repeatedly adding interior putty. Have the cause assessed, then prepare and repaint only after the crack and surrounding substrate are stable and dry.
