You do not normally turn Night mode on from Settings. On every iPhone 12 model, the built-in Camera app activates Night mode automatically when it detects low light. Open Camera, stay in Photo mode, aim at the dark scene, and wait for the Night mode icon to turn yellow. You can then tap the control and extend the exposure—up to Max when that option is available.
For the sharpest result, keep the iPhone still throughout the countdown. A longer exposure can brighten a static scene, but it can also blur moving people, cars, branches, or the camera itself.

Does the iPhone 12 have Night mode?
Yes. Apple lists the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max as supporting Night mode. It is not a separate camera mode that you select from the mode carousel. Instead, the Camera app detects low light and offers Night mode automatically.
Night mode may take less than a second in a moderately dim room or several seconds in a very dark scene. The exact capture time depends on the available light, the subject, the camera, and how steadily you hold the phone.
When Night mode is active, its icon appears yellow. If the icon is gray or does not appear, the camera has not activated Night mode for the current scene.
How to activate Night mode on an iPhone 12
- Open the Camera app.
- Stay in Photo mode.
- Point the iPhone at the nighttime subject or dark scene.
- Look near the top of the viewfinder for the Night mode icon.
- Wait for the icon to turn yellow.
- Press the shutter button.
- Hold the iPhone still until the countdown finishes.
On recent iOS versions, some camera controls may be hidden. If you cannot find the Night mode button, tap the arrow above the viewfinder to reveal the additional controls. Exact icon placement can vary slightly between iOS releases, but the relevant controls remain the Night mode icon, the arrow, the exposure slider, and the shutter button.

How to make a Night mode photo brighter
Night mode chooses an exposure automatically, but you can extend it when the scene allows:

- Tap the Night mode button.
- Use the slider above the shutter button.
- Move the slider toward Max for the longest available exposure.
- Press the shutter and remain still until the timer ends.
Max is not automatically the best setting. It can collect more light and reveal more detail in a static building, landscape, interior, or night sky. However, it also gives movement more time to create blur. For people, traffic, pets, or moving branches, Auto or a shorter exposure is often more successful.
After you press the shutter, the exposure slider becomes a countdown timer. If the capture is taking too long or the subject has moved out of frame, tap the Stop button beneath the slider to interrupt it.
How to get sharper nighttime photos
Keep the phone still
Grip the iPhone with both hands, keep your elbows close to your body, and avoid touching it during the countdown. You can also lean against a wall or railing, rest the phone on a secure table, or use a tripod.
A tripod reduces camera shake but cannot freeze a moving subject. If people or objects in the scene are moving, reduce the exposure rather than automatically choosing Max.
Use the crosshairs when they appear
On iOS 14 and later, the Camera app may display crosshairs when it detects movement during a Night mode capture. Keep the phone as still as possible and align the crosshairs in the viewfinder until the countdown ends.
Clean the lenses
Fingerprints and smears become especially visible around streetlights, lamps, and other bright points at night. Wipe the camera lenses with a clean, soft cloth before shooting.

Choose the main camera in very dark scenes
On the standard iPhone 12, Apple lists a dual 12-megapixel rear camera system. Its Main camera has an ƒ/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization, while the Ultra Wide camera has an ƒ/2.4 aperture. As a practical photography choice, the Main camera is usually the better starting point in extremely dark conditions because it accepts more light and is optically stabilized. These specifications are documented in Apple’s iPhone 12 technical specifications.
Avoid unnecessary zoom
Digital zoom can make nighttime noise and softness more noticeable. Move closer when it is safe and practical, or use the Main camera rather than heavily cropping a dark image.
Reduce movement when pressing the shutter
If pressing the shutter shakes the phone, use a timer or a remote shutter when available. The goal is to avoid movement both when starting the exposure and while the countdown is running.
What to do if the Night mode icon does not appear
Night mode appears when the camera detects sufficiently low light; it will not necessarily appear simply because you are taking a picture at night. Work through these checks:
- Move to a darker composition. The scene may be bright enough that Night mode is unnecessary. Pointing directly at a bright lamp can also change what the camera detects.
- Confirm that you are in Photo mode. Other camera modes have different behavior and controls.
- Check the flash and Live Photos. Manually enabling either can disable Night mode.
- Stabilize and recompose. Hold the phone steady and aim at the subject again.
- Clean the lens. Check for fingerprints, condensation, dirt, a finger, a case edge, or a lens protector obstructing the camera.
- Close and reopen Camera. This can help if the control appears unresponsive.
- Restart the iPhone. Do this if the problem continues across multiple genuinely dark scenes.
The first three checks describe documented Night mode behavior. Lens obstructions and restarting the app are general troubleshooting steps rather than requirements Apple specifically identifies for Night mode.
Night mode versus flash
Night mode and flash solve different problems:
| Use Night mode when you want to… | Use flash when you want to… |
|---|---|
| Preserve ambient light in a cityscape, landscape, interior, or broad nighttime scene | Illuminate a nearby person or object |
| Capture a more natural-looking background | Use a short burst of direct light on a relatively close subject |
| Accept a longer exposure and can keep the phone steady | Accept harder light, reflections, red-eye, or a darker background |
While Night mode is operating, flash and Live Photos are not active by default. Manually turning on the flash or Live Photos disables Night mode, according to Apple’s Night mode support guide. If a moving person is close to the camera, flash may be more practical; for an atmospheric nighttime scene, Night mode is usually the better choice.

Night mode features and iPhone 12 model differences
Night mode selfies
The iPhone 12 family supports Night mode selfies. Open Camera, tap the front-camera switch, hold the phone steady, and take the selfie when the Night mode icon activates.
Night mode Time-lapse
The iPhone 12 family also supports Night mode Time-lapse:

- Swipe left to Time-lapse.
- Mount the iPhone on a tripod or place it securely on a stable surface.
- Tap the shutter button.
A stable mount is particularly important because a time-lapse combines many frames over an extended period.
Night mode Portrait
Do not assume that every iPhone 12 supports Night mode Portrait. Apple’s compatibility list includes the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, but not the standard iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 mini.
All four models support ordinary Night mode, but their camera hardware is not identical. The standard iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini use a dual-camera system, while the Pro models have additional Pro camera hardware. Apple’s general support information should not be interpreted as proof that every lens behaves identically in every camera mode.

By default, the Camera app can return Night mode to its automatic behavior. On supported iOS versions, you can preserve the last Night mode setting:

Settings → Camera → Preserve Settings → Night Mode
Turn on the Night Mode option if you want the camera to remember the setting rather than returning to Auto. Menu labels and placement can vary slightly by iOS release; if you do not see the path exactly, open Settings and search for Preserve Settings. Apple documents this option in its Camera settings guide.
Night mode troubleshooting by symptom
The photo is blurry
- Hold the phone still for the entire countdown.
- Move the exposure slider away from Max.
- Use a solid surface or tripod.
- Ask people in the frame to remain still.
- Use flash for a nearby moving subject if its harsher look is acceptable.
The photo is too dark
- Make sure the Night mode icon is yellow before pressing the shutter.
- Use a longer exposure or choose Max for a static scene.
- Switch to the Main camera in very dark conditions.
- Stabilize the iPhone so the camera can complete the exposure cleanly.
The photo is too bright or unnatural
- Reduce the exposure time instead of using Max.
- Tap an important subject to check how the camera responds to the scene.
- Recompose to avoid pointing directly at a bright lamp.
- Review the image at full size rather than judging only the brightened preview.
The capture takes too long
The available exposure range is scene-dependent. Max is an upper option offered by the camera, not a shutter speed that you enter manually. If the phone is unstable or the scene changes, the final result may still be shortened or compromised. Tap Stop to interrupt the exposure, then stabilize the phone and retake the picture.
Do you need to buy a tripod?
No. A secure table, wall, railing, or other solid surface may be enough for an occasional Night mode photo. A tripod becomes useful when you regularly photograph static scenes at the longest exposure or want consistent framing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the support that matches your shooting:
- Compact mobile tripod: useful for travel and flat, stable surfaces.
- Flexible-leg tripod: better for uneven surfaces, rails, or poles.
- Clamp-based mount: preferable if you want a conventional locking grip rather than relying mainly on magnetic attachment.
Do not buy a paid camera app or “night vision” lens simply to obtain ordinary iPhone 12 Night mode. The built-in Camera app already provides the relevant automatic activation, exposure adjustment, and countdown controls.
Quick checklist
- Open Camera and select Photo.
- Aim at a genuinely dark scene.
- Wait for the Night mode icon to turn yellow.
- Reveal the controls with the arrow if necessary.
- Choose Auto for moving subjects or Max for static scenes.
- Brace the phone or use a tripod.
- Align crosshairs if they appear.
- Do not enable flash or Live Photos if you want Night mode.
- Hold still until the countdown ends.
The Bottom Line
The simplest answer: let the iPhone 12 activate Night mode automatically, keep the phone steady, and use Max only when the scene and subject can remain still. Flash or Live Photos will disable Night mode, and Night mode Portrait is limited to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.
