Recovery depends on how the PSD was stored and how it was lost. For an Adobe Photoshop cloud document, check Version History or Deleted; after a crash, reopen Photoshop to look for recovery information; for a local file, check the Recycle Bin or Trash and any backup that covered its folder. If a local file was permanently deleted, recovery is uncertain, so minimize use of the affected drive and recover to a different drive.
Identify the kind of loss
First determine whether the document was saved as a Photoshop cloud document or as a local PSD, and whether it was deleted, overwritten, lost after a crash, or damaged. Each situation has a different recovery route.
| Situation | First step | What may be recovered |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud document deleted or changed | Check Deleted or Version History | A deleted document or an earlier saved version, if retained |
| Photoshop crashed before saving | Reopen Photoshop and check for a recovered document | Work captured in recovery information, if available |
| Local PSD deleted or overwritten | Check Recycle Bin or Trash, then backups | A copy that remains in the bin or was included in a backup |
| Local PSD permanently deleted | Minimize computer use; consider a suitable recovery method | Possibly some or all of the file, if its data has not been overwritten |
| PSD still exists but is damaged | Preserve the original and check for a backup | Recovery depends on the file and available copies; it is not guaranteed |
Cloud-document history is not the same as a backup for every local PSD. Recovery can fail when no copy exists, recovery information was not retained, or deleted data has been overwritten.

Recover an Adobe Photoshop cloud document
Use Adobe’s cloud-document controls if the file was saved as a Photoshop cloud document. A regular local PSD does not automatically gain cloud version history just because Photoshop or Creative Cloud is installed.
Restore an earlier version
- Open the cloud document in Photoshop desktop or access cloud documents through the app home screen or Creative Cloud web.
- Open Version History. Adobe documents access through the Version History panel; the exact interface may vary by release.
- Inspect earlier versions and choose the one from before the unwanted change.
- Restore or open the appropriate version, taking care not to replace a version you still need.
- Confirm that the document contains the expected edits and that changes have synced before switching devices.
Restore a deleted cloud document
- Open the cloud document browser in the app home screen or Creative Cloud web.
- Open the Deleted section and locate the document.
- Select the restore option if the document is still available there.
Adobe says deleted cloud documents remain in Deleted until permanently removed. Do not choose permanent deletion when trying to recover a document.

Recover after Photoshop crashes
- Reopen Photoshop and look for a recovery prompt or recovered document.
- If a document appears, inspect it to see whether it includes the work you need.
- Save a recovered document as a new PSD or PSB and verify that the new copy opens.
Adobe documents a setting for automatically saving recovery information, but a recoverable copy is not guaranteed for every crash or unsaved session. If you closed a document normally and chose not to save, recovery may not be possible unless another copy exists. Do not rely on temporary-file searches or one universal AutoRecover folder path; consult Adobe’s current troubleshooting instructions for your Photoshop version and platform.
Enable recovery information for future crashes
In Photoshop, check the File Handling section of Preferences or Settings for the option to automatically save recovery information. The label and location can vary by release. This feature can help after some crashes, but it is not a substitute for saving your document and maintaining a backup.

Recover a deleted or overwritten local PSD
Check the Recycle Bin or Trash
- Search the Recycle Bin on Windows or Trash on macOS for the file.
- If you find it, restore it or copy it to a safe location.
- Before editing the recovered copy, confirm it is the correct version and preserve another copy if possible.
Check backups and version history
Look for a backup or synced-storage version history that covered the folder where the PSD was stored. On Windows, File History can restore previous copies when it was configured and included the relevant folder. Microsoft’s instructions say essential folders are backed up by default, while additional folders can be included in a library; verify that your working folder was actually covered.
If the PSD was overwritten, a prior backup or version may be the best route. Restore to another location when possible so you can inspect the earlier copy without replacing the current file.

Attempt deleted-file recovery on Windows
If a local PSD was permanently deleted and no backup is available, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery is an option for local storage devices. Microsoft says its source and destination must be different drives. If the computer has only one drive, use a separate external or USB drive as the destination. An external USB hard drive can also serve as a backup destination, but buying one does not recover data by itself.
- Stop using the affected computer as much as practical. Microsoft Support advises minimizing or avoiding computer use because new data can overwrite space occupied by deleted files.
- Connect a separate destination drive and confirm its drive letter.
- Consult Microsoft’s current Windows File Recovery instructions for the appropriate mode and syntax for your situation.
- Save recovered output to the separate destination drive, never to the source drive.
- Inspect recovered files on the destination. A scan does not guarantee that a complete, working PSD will be recovered.
Windows File Recovery is for local storage devices, not cloud storage or network file shares. Do not confuse Windows System Restore with personal-file recovery; Microsoft’s documentation describes System Restore as restoring system files and settings, not personal files.
Best Value
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
If the PSD still exists but will not open
Make a copy and preserve the original before attempting any repair. Check for a backup or earlier version first. Adobe’s recovery troubleshooting discusses file recovery, but the evidence does not justify promising that a damaged PSD can be repaired or that its layers can be restored. If the file is on unstable storage or copying it produces errors, avoid repeated attempts that could make matters worse.
Prevent losing PSD work
- Save regularly. Recovery information may help after a crash, but it cannot replace saving the document.
- Back up the folder that contains your local PSDs. Configure File History or another backup workflow and verify that the working folder is included.
- Use cloud documents deliberately. Confirm that a document is actually a cloud document, use Version History for important milestones, and verify that changes have synced before switching devices.
- Test your backups. Periodically confirm that a file can be found and restored from the backup location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Photoshop recover an unsaved PSD after a crash?
Sometimes. Reopen Photoshop and check for a recovery prompt or recovered document. Adobe’s recovery-information feature does not guarantee that every crash or unsaved session leaves a recoverable copy.
Does Adobe cloud Version History work for every local PSD?
No. Version History and the Deleted section apply to Photoshop cloud documents. A local PSD does not automatically receive cloud history because Photoshop or Creative Cloud is installed.
Can I recover a permanently deleted PSD without a backup?
Possibly, but recovery is uncertain. On Windows, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery can attempt recovery from local storage, with output written to a different drive. Minimize computer use because new data can overwrite deleted-file data.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Windows System Restore bring back a deleted PSD?
Do not rely on it for personal-file recovery. Microsoft documents System Restore as restoring system files and settings. Check the Recycle Bin, a file backup such as File History, or an appropriate deleted-file recovery method instead.
