Set up your chair, table, machine, and pedal so you can sew with the work near elbow height, elbows close to your sides, wrists straight, and feet supported. Keep fabric and tools within easy reach, improve the light on the work, and take short breaks to stretch or change position. These adjustments can reduce ergonomic strain; they cannot guarantee that pain will be prevented.

How should you sit at a sewing machine?
Sewing posture depends on how your body fits the chair, table, machine, and pedal together. A fixed-height setup that suits one person may not suit another. OSHA identifies both worker size and workstation design as factors in sewing-station risks. Its recommendations are practical guidance, not a universal required specification or a guarantee of pain prevention.
Start by sitting close enough to the machine that you do not have to reach forward. Keep your elbows near your body and your wrists straight while working. The sewing surface should be around elbow height: a surface that is too low can encourage hunching, while one that is too high can make you raise your shoulders. How to adjust your sewing station
- Move close to the work. Position the chair so you can reach the machine without leaning forward, with elbows near your sides.
- Set the work height. Adjust the table or chair so the sewing work is near elbow height and your wrists can remain straight. Leave room for your thighs and legs to move freely.
- Support your sitting position. Choose a stable chair with adjustable seat height and backrest position, lower-back support, and a cushioned or contoured seat. Where possible, keep the whole sole of each foot supported. If the setup prevents this, a footrest may help you find a comfortable fit; OSHA’s sewing guidance does not specifically endorse consumer footrests.
- Place the pedal comfortably. Position it so you can operate it without giving up a close, balanced sitting position. Avoid holding one leg in an awkward posture for long periods. A pedal may require the seat to be slightly lower.
Check the fit as a whole rather than adjusting one part in isolation. For example, raising a chair can bring the work to elbow height but leave your feet unsupported; raising the table can create leg-clearance problems. Make small adjustments until the work, arms, seat, and pedal allow a relaxed position.
Keep fabric and tools within easy reach
Repeated reaching and twisting can add strain. Keep fabric, tools, and supplies close by and, where practical, at table height. Avoid repeatedly reaching behind you, to the side, overhead, or down into low containers. Turn your chair to retrieve something rather than twisting your trunk. When possible, let the machine feed the fabric instead of pushing it. OSHA’s stitching guidance discusses reducing reach and distance from the machine.

Improve visibility without leaning in
Direct adjustable task lighting onto the sewing area so you can see detail without bringing your head and upper body forward. If close work remains difficult to see, magnification may help you inspect it without bending toward the fabric.

For fine work, OSHA suggests raising the work surface, but that can also raise the elbows. If you use a raised surface, support raised elbows with padded rests rather than holding them unsupported. See OSHA’s fine-work guidance for these visibility and positioning considerations.

Take short breaks and change position
OSHA advises: “Schedule frequent, short breaks to stretch and/or change position.” The guidance does not specify a universal break interval, so use regular pauses that fit your sewing session rather than relying on a prescribed timer. Stretch, shift position, or alternate tasks when feasible.

OSHA’s sewing eTool overview says the eTool provides example solutions and does not create new OSHA requirements. Its recommendations are guidance for reducing ergonomic strain, not proof that a particular chair, table, light, or adjustment prevents pain.
