In hand embroidery, thorn stitch is a form of couching: a long foundation thread is laid on the fabric and held in place with small, off-centred crossing stitches. Those crossings create the stitch’s thorn-like projections, making it useful for stems, ferns, and other branching lines. The name also appears in Mountmellick embroidery, older needlework books, and sewing-machine manuals, where it can describe different constructions.
How the common hand-embroidery thorn stitch is constructed
Thorn stitch begins with a continuous thread laid along the intended line. Short stitches cross over it at intervals to secure it to the fabric. In the Royal School of Needlework’s StitchBank description, the securing stitches are off-centred, so their ends project alternately or at an angle rather than forming a regular straight bar across the foundation thread. The result resembles a stem with thorns or small branches.

The method is couching: the laid thread provides the line, while separate stitches hold it down. The crossing stitches—not the foundation thread alone—make the thorn effect. Their spacing and angle shape the finished line; there is no single spacing or angle that suits every design. The Royal School of Needlework describes the stitch and its uses in its Thorn stitch entry.
How to work thorn stitch
- Prepare the line. Mark or otherwise establish the path for the stem or fern. Thread your needle and bring the foundation thread to the surface at the start of the line.
- Lay the foundation thread. Guide it along the marked path, keeping it loose enough to follow curves without pulling the fabric out of shape. For a curved line, feed the thread around the curve rather than stretching it straight.
- Anchor the thread. With a second working pass or a separate thread, make small stitches across the laid thread at intervals. Place each crossing stitch off-centre and angle it to create the projections.
- Continue along the design. Repeat the crossings, varying their spacing or angle to suit the form you want. Keep the foundation thread following the intended line, and secure the end neatly when you reach the finish.
AllPeopleQuilt’s thorn-stitch tutorial demonstrates laying a continuous thread and adding small stitches around it. A documented project uses Perle cotton No. 3 and a milliner’s needle No. 1. These are example materials, not universal requirements: choose embroidery floss or Perle cotton thread, and a hand embroidery needle, to suit your fabric, thread thickness, and desired effect.

Other stitches and machine settings called “thorn stitch”
| Name or context | Construction | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Common contemporary hand-embroidery thorn stitch | A laid thread held by off-centred crossing stitches | Decorative thorny stems and ferns |
| Mountmellick thorn stitch | A feather-stitch variation with an added knot in every other stitch | Mountmellick surface embroidery |
| Historical thorn stitch in Decorative Art Needlework | A line of interlaced loops resembling single coral stitch, worked in alternating directions | A different historical construction, not the usual contemporary couching definition |
| Singer machine stitch 35 | A numbered sewing-machine stitch; the construction and availability depend on the machine | The cited Singer instructions describe joining fabric pieces as well as decorative sewing |
Mountmellick thorn stitch
The Royal School of Needlework treats Mountmellick thorn stitch as a separate surface stitch, not as the couching method described above. It is a feather-stitch variation with an extra knot in every other stitch. The RSN says its precise origin is difficult to establish, but the stitch was in use by the first part of the twentieth century because it appears in Weldon’s Encyclopedia of Needlework. See the RSN’s Thorn stitch (Mountmellick) entry.
The older looped construction
The Library of Congress-hosted Decorative Art Needlework uses “thorn stitch” for interlaced loops resembling single coral stitch and describes alternating the direction of the work. That is another historical use of the same name; it should not be mistaken for the modern couching method. The digitized book is available from the Library of Congress.

Singer’s machine-stitch label
A Singer instruction document calls stitch 35 “Thorn Stitch” and describes it as suitable for joining fabric pieces and for decorative sewing. This is a machine-specific label, not a guarantee that every Singer model—or another brand—has the same numbered stitch. Consult the manual for the exact machine before choosing a setting. The cited instructions are hosted in a Singer stitch applications guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the name has several meanings
“Thorn stitch” is not a single universally standardized construction across all needlework eras and contexts. The Royal School of Needlework’s general reference entry lists older and modern stitch references, including Caulfeild and Saward’s The Dictionary of Needlework (1882), Mrs Archibald Christie’s Samplers and Stitches (1921), and Mary Thomas’s Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches (1934), as well as later guides. Those titles show why a reader may encounter the name in sources that do not describe exactly the same stitch. For current hand embroidery, the couching definition is the practical starting point; check the source’s context when the name appears in a historical book, a Mountmellick pattern, or a machine manual. The references are listed in the RSN’s Thorn stitch entry.
