Yes, you can sometimes clean a cured painted wall with laundry detergent, but only as a cautious adaptation of standard mild-detergent guidance. Dust first, dilute a very small amount of mild, non-abrasive detergent in warm water, and use a thoroughly wrung microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Wipe lightly, rinse away residue with a clean damp cloth, and dry immediately. Always test both the detergent and your wiping pressure behind furniture before treating a visible mark.
This approach is safest on washable finishes such as satin, semigloss, and gloss. Flat and matte paint can burnish, streak, or rub away, so use less water and almost no pressure. Do not wash newly painted walls until the film has cured for at least two weeks unless the paint maker specifies a longer or different period.

You can use laundry detergent conditionally, not universally. The consulted paint-care guidance recommends warm water with a small amount of mild, non-abrasive detergent for ordinary marks, but it does not test specific laundry-detergent formulas. A laundry product may contain fragrances, builders, enzymes, brighteners, solvents, or other additives that react differently with paint. Choose the mildest liquid formula available, dilute it heavily, and stop if the test area changes.
Use the paint manufacturer’s care instructions first. If those instructions prohibit a cleaner, follow them instead. For waterborne paint, Sherwin-Williams specifically advises avoiding ammoniated products; mild soapy water is generally sufficient. Never assume that a product described as “powerful,” “degreasing,” or “stain-fighting” is safe for a painted wall.

What this method is intended to remove
- Surface dust and dry soil after dusting
- Fingerprints and light hand marks
- Many ordinary scuffs and light grime
- Some fresh, greasy residue when a mild detergent is appropriate for the paint
Deeply absorbed smoke, water, rust, ink, tannin, crayon, or oil stains may remain after cleaning. More force can remove the paint film instead of the stain.
What should I check before cleaning?
Confirm that the surface is a fully cured painted wall, not wallpaper or another wallcovering. Wallcoverings have different moisture and solvent tolerances; follow their manufacturer’s instructions rather than this procedure. Identify the paint finish if you can, because sheen strongly affects the risk of damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the cure time
Wait at least two weeks before washing a newly painted wall. The Home Depot, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin-Williams each give approximately a two-week minimum in their general guidance. This is a minimum, not a guarantee that every paint is ready under every condition. Cool temperatures, high humidity, poor ventilation, or a product label that specifies a longer cure can require more time. If the wall still feels soft, tacky, or unusually tender, wait and consult the paint label.
Identify the finish
Flat and matte surfaces have the lowest cleaning tolerance. Eggshell is intermediate. Satin is generally more durable, while semigloss and gloss are usually the most washable, although abrasive tools can scratch them. A sheen change can be more noticeable than the original mark, particularly when light hits the wall from the side.
Gather the least aggressive tools
- Soft microfiber cloths, with at least one reserved for rinsing and one for drying
- A clean, non-abrasive sponge if a cloth cannot reach the texture
- Two containers of warm water, one for the cleaning mix and one for rinsing
- A mild liquid laundry detergent, used only in a very small amount
- A soft dusting cloth, dust brush, or vacuum brush attachment
- Painter’s tape or a note to mark the hidden test location
Do not start with melamine foam, scouring pads, stiff brushes, powdered cleanser, razor blades, or abrasive household pastes. These can dull, scratch, or burnish paint even when the detergent itself is mild.

How do I remove a wall stain with diluted laundry detergent?
Work slowly in a small area. The goal is to soften and lift surface soil, not to scour the wall. Keep the cloth damp rather than wet, keep the solution weak, and rinse away every trace of detergent.
- Dust the wall. Remove loose dust and grit with a soft cloth, dust brush, or vacuum brush. Dry particles can act like abrasives when dragged across wet paint.
- Prepare a weak solution. Fill a container with warm, not hot, water. Add only a tiny amount of mild, non-abrasive liquid laundry detergent. The water should remain mostly clear and only lightly soapy; a highly concentrated mix leaves residue and increases the chance of a visible halo.
- Inspect the label. Do not use an ammoniated product on waterborne paint, and avoid a formula whose label conflicts with your paint maker’s instructions. If you cannot identify the paint or detergent ingredients, make the test area especially small and allow it to dry fully.
- Patch-test the product and technique. Choose a hidden spot behind furniture, a door, or wall art. Apply the same amount of moisture and pressure you plan to use on the stain. Let the area dry completely, then check it in normal and angled light for color change, a different sheen, streaks, tackiness, or paint on the cloth.
- Prepare the cloth. Dip a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge in the solution and wring it until damp, never dripping. Excess water can migrate into seams, soften the film, or leave tide marks.
- Wipe a small section. Use light circular or controlled straight strokes. Start at the edge of the mark and work inward so you do not spread soil over a larger area. Make one or two passes, then inspect rather than automatically repeating.
- Rinse. Use a separate clean cloth dampened with plain water. Wipe the treated area once or twice to remove detergent residue, wringing the cloth frequently so you are not redepositing dirty water.
- Dry immediately. Blot or wipe with a soft, dry cloth and allow normal air circulation. Do not leave a wet patch to air-dry slowly on a vulnerable flat finish.
- Reassess before another pass. Wait until the area is fully dry. If the mark is lighter but the finish is unchanged, you may repeat one gentle pass. If the sheen or color has changed, stop.
How much detergent should I use?
There is no validated universal ratio for laundry detergent on painted walls. Use substantially less than you would for washing clothes: the solution should be weak enough that a clean rinse removes it easily. Adding more detergent does not compensate for a stain that has penetrated the paint; it mainly increases residue and cleaning stress.
How should I handle a vertical wall?
Clean a small rectangle at a time, keeping the wet boundary controlled. Do not saturate the top of a wall and let dirty solution run downward. If drips form, catch them immediately with a dry cloth and reduce the water on the next section.
Which paint finishes are safest to wash?
Finish determines how much moisture and pressure the surface can tolerate. The table reflects general guidance from The Home Depot and ROSCO; the product label for your specific paint takes priority.
| Finish | Cleaning tolerance | Safest approach | Stop signs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat or matte | Lowest; rubbing can remove paint or create shiny burnished spots | Use the least water, an exceptionally soft cloth, and almost no pressure. Make one short pass. | Any sheen change, color transfer, streak, or softened area |
| Eggshell | Intermediate; repeated rubbing can still alter sheen | Patch-test carefully, keep the cloth barely damp, and avoid repeated scrubbing. | A polished-looking patch or a visible wipe boundary after drying |
| Satin | Generally more durable | Use mild solution, soft tools, limited moisture, and a clean-water rinse. | Streaking, loss of uniform sheen, or scratches from the tool |
| Semigloss or gloss | Generally the most washable, but the film can scratch | Mild detergent may be suitable; keep abrasive particles and pads away from the surface. | Fine scratches, dulling, or a cloudy residue that remains after rinsing |
How should I treat different kinds of wall marks?
Identify the soil before choosing another cleaning attempt. A stronger chemical or harder scrub is not automatically a better solution.

Dust and loose dirt
Dry-clean first. A soft cloth or vacuum brush often removes this material without any liquid. If you wet dusty grit immediately, you can turn it into a paste that drags across the finish.
Fingerprints and light grime
These are the best candidates for the weak detergent solution. Use a damp, wrung cloth and a few light passes, then rinse and dry. On flat paint, stop as soon as the mark improves; chasing the last faint shadow can create a larger shiny patch.
Greasy or built-on marks
A mild detergent may loosen surface grease, but let the paint maker’s instructions decide whether to proceed. Test a hidden area first. If the grease has darkened the film or soaked into it, cleaning may not restore a uniform appearance.
Crayon, ink, smoke, rust, or water stains
These can penetrate or chemically alter the coating. ROSCO cautions that some marks are difficult or impossible to remove completely without removing the painted finish as well. Try only the mild method supported by your paint instructions; do not keep escalating pressure when the color remains.

When should I stop cleaning and repair the wall?
Stop immediately if the cloth picks up wall color, the surface feels soft or tacky, a shiny or dull patch appears, the stain spreads into a halo, or the paint begins to streak after drying. These symptoms indicate that continued rubbing is harming the finish or that moisture is affecting the film.
- Let the area dry fully before judging the final appearance.
- Photograph the damage in consistent light so you can match the touch-up later.
- Keep the original paint can or record the color, sheen, and product line if available.
- For a penetrating stain, seal it with a compatible stain-blocking primer and repaint as directed by the primer and paint labels.
- If the damaged area is large or the source was a leak, smoke event, or mold condition, correct the source before repainting.
Repainting is not a cleaning failure when the stain has changed the substrate or the paint film. It is often the only way to restore an even color and sheen without removing more surrounding paint.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes damage painted walls?
- Skipping the dust step: grit becomes an abrasive slurry under the cloth.
- Using a strong mix: concentrated detergent leaves a film and may soften or discolor the coating.
- Soaking the wall: excess water can damage the finish and create drying marks.
- Scrubbing until the stain disappears: the stain may be permanent while the paint is not.
- Ignoring the finish: a technique tolerable on gloss can burnish flat paint.
- Cleaning fresh paint: a surface that feels dry may still be curing underneath.
- Using abrasive tools: scouring pads, stiff brushes, and abrasive sponges can scratch or polish the film.
- Failing to rinse: detergent residue attracts dirt and can leave a visible dull or glossy patch.
- Testing only the liquid: the pressure and number of passes also need to be tested.
How can I prevent stains and make future cleaning safer?
Use washable paint in high-contact areas when practical, especially hallways, kitchens, play spaces, and around light switches. Keep a small amount of the original paint for future touch-ups and label the can with the room, color, sheen, and application date. Dust walls periodically so grit does not accumulate, and address fingerprints while they are still surface soil.

What do paint-care sources say about this method?
Sherwin-Williams describes maintenance cleaning as important to the life of a painted surface and says mild soapy water generally suffices for waterborne paint while ammoniated products should be avoided. The Home Depot advises a small amount of mild detergent, notes that flat and eggshell finishes are less durable, and gives a minimum wait of about two weeks before washing new paint. Benjamin Moore says plain warm water works for most stains and also recommends waiting about two weeks. Dulux recommends warm, soapy water with the mildest detergent and a soft sponge. ROSCO warns that some stains cannot be completely removed without removing the painted finish. These are general care principles, so the label for your exact paint remains authoritative.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use powdered laundry detergent to clean a painted wall?
Powder is a poor choice because undissolved particles can scratch the finish and concentrated residue is harder to rinse away. If your paint instructions permit detergent cleaning, use a very small amount of a mild liquid formula instead and patch-test it first.
Will laundry detergent remove cigarette smoke or water stains from paint?
It may remove some surface soil, but smoke and water stains often penetrate the coating or substrate. If a gentle, label-approved cleaning attempt leaves the stain, seal it with a compatible primer and repaint rather than scrubbing harder.

Why did my wall become shiny after cleaning?
The cloth may have burnished the paint, especially on flat, matte, or eggshell finishes. Let the area dry, compare it in angled light, and stop cleaning; a matching touch-up or repaint is usually safer than trying to rub the sheen back to uniformity.
Can I clean a wall with laundry detergent if I do not know the paint type?
Treat the wall as vulnerable: use plain warm water first, choose the least wet microfiber cloth, and test behind furniture. If the hidden test changes color or sheen, do not use detergent on the visible area; identify the paint or ask the manufacturer for care instructions.
How do I avoid a detergent ring around the cleaned spot?
Work in a small, controlled section with a barely damp cloth, then make a clean-water pass that extends slightly beyond the original edge. Dry the area immediately and judge it only after the wall is completely dry.
