You can turn old shirts into a quilt by first separating the usable fabric, then preparing woven shirts and stretchy T-shirts differently. Wash and inspect each shirt, remove seams and details you do not want, and plan blocks around the fabric and any graphics you want to keep. Stabilize T-shirt knit with lightweight fusible interfacing before trimming and piecing.

Choose a preparation method for the shirt fabric
Woven button-downs and T-shirts behave differently when cut and sewn. Woven cotton shirts can generally be opened at their seams and used as fabric panels. T-shirt knit stretches and may curl at raw edges, so stabilizing it before cutting blocks makes it easier to handle.
| Shirt type | Preparation | Layout consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Woven button-down | Wash, inspect, remove seams and garment details, then save usable panels. | Use the remaining panels as their sizes allow; inspect blends and worn areas rather than assuming they behave like plain cotton. |
| T-shirt knit | Wash and dry, separate the panels, apply lightweight fusible interfacing, then trim. | Plan block shapes around important graphics instead of cutting every shirt to one square. |
Gather tools and supplies
For cutting and piecing, useful supplies include fabric scissors, a rotary cutter, a large cutting mat, a ruler, an iron, thread, and a sewing machine with a quarter-inch foot. A 6½-by-24½-inch ruler and a 12½-by-12½-inch ruler appear on the American Quilter’s Society supply list. For T-shirt panels, have fusible iron-on interfacing and an appliqué sheet or pressing cloth available; batting and backing depend on the finish you choose. See the American Quilter’s Society T-shirt quilt supply list.

Prepare woven button-down shirts
The following deconstruction approach is intended for woven shirt construction. Wash new-to-you shirts before cutting and check for holes, thinning, stains, or other wear. Preserve any buttons, labels, or other details you want to keep before removing them. Larger shirts generally provide more usable fabric, but there is no universal yardage yield per shirt.
- Make small cuts beside the buttons and buttonholes, then rip the fabric toward the collar.
- Cut or rip around the collar. A collar without interfacing is more usable as fabric than one with interfacing.
- Remove the sleeves and open each sleeve along its seam. On long-sleeve shirts, remove the cuffs.
- Make small cuts beside the side seams and rip to separate the front panels from the back.
- Remove the yoke, then keep the back, two fronts, and two sleeves together as a set. Remove buttons from small scraps if you want to save them.
- Group prepared pieces with fabrics of similar fiber content and save smaller scraps for other projects.
This method follows the AllPeopleQuilt shirt deconstruction guide. Inspect collars, cuffs, blends, and heavily worn areas individually; not every piece will be suitable for a quilt block.

Prepare T-shirts and other knit panels
T-shirt fabric stretches and can curl where it is cut. Lightweight nonwoven fusible interfacing helps control both problems. Wash and dry shirts completely before preparation, and center the design before choosing the block dimensions.
- Remove the sleeves and separate the front and back panels.
- Choose a block size that preserves the graphic or image you want to feature. Adult-shirt blocks as large as 16 inches square and 10–12-inch squares for many child or teen shirts are examples, not required dimensions.
- Cut interfacing to cover the intended block area, place it behind the design, and fuse it according to the interfacing maker’s directions. Pressing from the back helps protect printed artwork.
- Trim the stabilized panel to the planned block size.
The National Quilters Circle tutorial recommends lightweight nonwoven fusible interfacing for knit panels. The American Quilter’s Society supply list names Pellon 911FF and SF101 as examples of fusible interfacing. It estimates one-half yard per T-shirt block; treat that as the list’s supply estimate, not a universal amount for every layout.

Plan the layout before sewing
Arrange the prepared pieces on a large surface before joining them. Check image placement, color balance, and the overall dimensions; this is the point to revise block sizes or positions if a graphic is cropped or the rows do not fit together as intended.
- Uniform squares: create a regular grid when the available panels and graphics allow it.
- Image-focused blocks: vary block dimensions to preserve artwork, then use the surrounding layout to reconcile different sizes.
- With sashing: add strips between blocks to separate designs or help bring pieces into a workable top.
- Without sashing: join blocks directly when their edges and dimensions suit the layout.
These are layout choices rather than tested rankings: the sources describe options but do not compare their durability or performance. For examples of T-shirt quilt construction, see AllPeopleQuilt’s T-shirt quilt pattern.

Piece the top and finish the quilt
- Sew the prepared blocks into rows, pressing the rows as you go. Add sashing between blocks if it is part of the plan.
- Join the rows to complete the quilt top.
- Choose backing and batting to suit the desired weight and finish.
- Quilt the layers by hand or machine using an approach suited to their thickness.
A conventional finish uses the pieced top, batting, and a separate backing. Choose the materials and quilting approach after considering the layout and thickness of the fabrics; the available sources do not establish that one construction method is best for every shirt quilt.
