Sew a utensil roll by measuring your cutlery, making a fabric body, folding up a pocket, stitching dividers to fit each item, and adding a tie. The measurements below give you a clear starting point; adjust the roll and pocket to suit the utensils you actually carry.

Choose a construction and gather supplies

A simple two-layer wrap is the easiest option for a first project. Choose a padded version if you want extra structure, or add a zippered pocket if you need room for small extras; those details add steps.

Design What it offers What you need to add
Simple fabric wrap A pocket divided to hold utensils, with a tie closure. Two fabric rectangles, thread, and tie material such as ribbon or leather cord. See Paper & Stitch’s fabric utensil wrap.
Padded roll Batting adds a layer of padding beneath the fabric. Batting and a marking pen, in addition to fabric and thread. All People Quilt’s utensil roll is a padded example.
Roll with zippered pocket and binding Adds a separate pocket for small items, with bound edges. An 8-inch zipper and ½-inch double-fold binding; this design involves more construction steps. See Gathered Seams’ cutlery roll pattern.

For the simple version, gather fabric, thread, pins, a sewing machine, an iron, and ribbon, binding tape, leather cord, or a fabric tie. Fabric scraps can work if you have pieces large enough for the body.

Measure your utensils and plan the layout

  1. Choose the utensils you want the roll to hold, then measure the longest one. The pocket must be deep enough to hold the tools while leaving their handles accessible.
  2. Lay the utensils side by side in the order you want them stored. Leave enough space between them for the pocket dividers and for easy removal.
  3. Use the layout to decide the roll’s width and the pocket’s division spacing. Published examples use different intervals: one tutorial sews lines about every inch, while the All People Quilt pattern marks divisions 1¾ inches apart. Those are pattern-specific examples, not universal measurements; fit the spacing to your own tools.
  4. Choose a tie long enough to wrap around the finished roll and knot or bow comfortably. Plan to secure it at one side of the body.

Before sewing the dividers, place the actual utensils on the pocket and check each proposed channel. If you are following a printed pattern, treat its dimensions as specifications for that design rather than as a standard size. Hobbycraft’s cutlery wrap instructions also begin with measuring the cutlery.

Blulu 1 Pcs Quilting Seam Roller, Sewing Seam Wallpaper Roller
  • What you receive: package comes with 1 piece seam roller, practical tool in the sewing room and craft room, and you can use it to replace a bone folder with paper as this rolling tool will not leave marks on color papers
  • Functional tool: when you can't have the iron up and hot or when children are running around your work area, this quilting roller can create fast, flat seams without too much effort, so you can finish your project faster and heat-free
  • Wide applications: the roll and press quilting tool can be applied for quilting, sewing, and small sewing spaces where irons are hard to fit, you can use it to press open seam before going to the ironing board; You can also use it to make creases when making greeting cards, home decoration, etc.
  • Easy to use: when opening the seams on your quilt blocks to press open with the iron, first rolled the roll and press over, then you could press the seam and keep your finger tips out of the way of the steam
  • Quality material: the wallpaper roller is made of wooden head and plastic handle, it will not get burned accidentally by iron, safe to use; Measures approx. 5.9 inches/ 15 cm long, the ergonomic handle offers you comfortable grip experience

Sew the simple two-layer body

For a clear starter size, Paper & Stitch’s example uses two 7-by-24-inch fabric rectangles and fits a fork, knife, spoon, and metal straw. Make a larger or smaller body if your layout calls for it.

  1. Place the rectangles right sides together and pin around the edges.
  2. Sew around three sides, leaving one short side open for turning.
  3. Turn the piece right side out through the opening. Use the iron to press it flat and neatly shape the corners.
  4. Fold the raw edges at the opening inward to match the seam allowance, press, then stitch the opening closed.

For the padded option, the All People Quilt pattern specifies a finished roll measuring 9 by 14½ inches and uses two 9½-by-15-inch body pieces plus batting. Follow its pattern for the construction details; those dimensions belong to that pattern and are not required for the simple wrap.

Form the pocket and add the tie

  1. Fold the bottom edge of the body upward to create the pocket. Set the fold height using your longest utensil so the tools are held securely and remain easy to grasp.
  2. Pin the pocket sides in place. If using a tie, position one end at the side seam or edge where it will be caught securely, with the rest extending outward from the body.
  3. Stitch down both sides of the pocket to hold the fold. Secure the tie in the seam or stitch it firmly to the body before moving on.

A fabric tie can be made from a strip of fabric; ribbon, binding tape, or leather cord are other options used in published examples. Check that the tie is anchored before trimming or finishing its loose end.

Sew the utensil dividers

  1. Place the utensils on the pocket again and mark the divider lines between them. A water- or air-soluble marking pen is useful, especially on a padded design.
  2. Remove the utensils, then sew along each marked line from the pocket’s top edge down to its folded base. Keep the stitching straight and secure the ends with backstitching or another reliable finish.
  3. Put the utensils into their channels and check that each fits without forcing. If needed, adjust a divider before the roll is used.

Do not rely on a sample interval alone: utensil widths vary, and the roll should reflect the actual set you plan to carry. For additional design ideas, see String & Story’s reusable utensil roll and Simply Living Well’s reusable utensil roll.
