To square up fabric for strip cutting, fold and smooth it, align a large square ruler’s line with the fold, and use a second ruler to hold that alignment while you trim the uneven edge with a rotary cutter. The straightened edge then becomes the starting reference for cutting strips.
What “square up” means
Squaring up is trimming an uneven fabric edge so it is straight and can serve as a reliable starting edge for measuring and cutting strips. In this right-handed method, a second ruler preserves the alignment of the large square ruler while you move the larger ruler out of the way.

What you need
- A large square quilting ruler
- A second quilting ruler
- A rotary cutter
- A cutting mat as the work surface
The AllPeopleQuilt tutorial does not specify ruler dimensions or brands, so choose rulers that suit your fabric and cutting setup.
Square the fabric edge

Fold and smooth the fabric
Bring the selvage edges together with the fabric’s right sides outward. Fold the fabric again so the folded edge is at the top, leaving four layers. Smooth the layers so they lie flat; the raw edge may be uneven, which is what you will trim.

Align the large ruler to the fold
Place the large square ruler on the fabric and align one of its horizontal lines with the lower folded edge. Use the ruler’s lines as your reference rather than relying on the cutting-mat grid. Leave roughly an inch or less of uneven fabric beyond the edge you intend to trim, as shown in the tutorial.

Transfer the alignment to the second ruler
Abut the second ruler against the large ruler with no gap. Hold the smaller ruler with fingertip pressure; the tutorial suggests placing your little finger along its outer edge for stability. Avoid laying your whole hand flat on the ruler, since it can slip.

Move the large ruler and trim
Keep the second ruler still as you slide the large ruler away. Once the alignment is secured, expose the rotary-cutter blade for the cut, press down, and cut down and away from yourself to remove the uneven edge. Clear away the scrap and retract or cover the blade when you are not cutting.
Cut strips from the squared edge
With the new straight edge as your starting point, position a ruler measurement line at the desired strip width and cut along the ruler. The demonstrated two-ruler workflow lets a right-handed cutter continue from the same side of the cutting surface without moving to the opposite side.

Why use two rulers?
The large square ruler establishes alignment against the fold; the second ruler holds that alignment in place after the large ruler is removed. The rulers need to touch without a gap, or the transferred edge may no longer match the original alignment. AllPeopleQuilt’s tutorial describes this as a convenient right-handed workflow, not as a measured accuracy improvement over other methods.

The companion left-handed two-ruler tutorial also describes fingertip placement and retracting the blade when it is not in use.
