Electric Quilt 8 (EQ8) can turn an imported photo into a patchwork-style quilt design using its Photo Patchwork workflow. You choose how the image fits the quilt, mask its edges, and select the patch shape and count. The result is a visual design—not a complete sewing pattern: EQ8 does not write the piecing instructions needed to make the quilt.

What EQ8 makes from a photo
Photo Patchwork divides an image into patches and assigns each one a color close to the average color of the corresponding photo area. The finished view is therefore a simplified, patch-based interpretation, not an exact photographic reproduction. Its appearance depends on image fit, cropping, patch geometry, and patch count.

How to convert a photo with Photo Patchwork
- Start a Photo Patchwork quilt. Choose Photo Patchwork from the New Quilt options or from the Quilt menu.
- Import the image. Select a photo saved on your computer; it does not have to be in the EQ8 library already.
- Choose how the image fits. Use Inside fit to keep the full image within the quilt area, Outside fit to fill that area while allowing cropping, or Distort fit to stretch the image to the chosen dimensions. You can also resize it manually. Pick the option that best preserves the composition you want.
- Adjust the mask. Mask areas beyond the quilt edge automatically or adjust the mask manually to control which parts of the image remain in the design.
- Set the patch style and count. On the Layout tab, select a one-patch style and choose a patch count. EQ8’s examples include hexagons, trapezoids, and diamonds. Compare shapes and density: smaller or more numerous patches may retain more visual detail, while also increasing the number of pieces and the work involved in construction.
- Preview the design. Click Show Quilt. EQ8 renders the patches using colors close to the average colors in their corresponding image areas.
Choose fit, patchwork, and fabric treatment
| Design choice | Options | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Image fit | Inside fit, Outside fit, Distort fit, or manual resizing | Decide whether preserving the whole photo, filling the quilt area, or stretching the composition matters most. |
| Mask | Automatic or manual adjustment | Control whether the design is contained within the quilt edge or cropped to it. |
| Patch geometry and count | Choose a one-patch style and patch count on the Layout tab | Balance recognizable detail against the number and complexity of pieces you are prepared to construct. |
| Color and fabric | Review the color-based quilt view or map it to fabrics in the project | Use flat colors to assess the layout, or try fabrics whose colors resemble the photo. |
Preview with fabrics and save the quilt
To see fabric imagery instead of the initial color-based view, first add suitable fabrics to the Project Sketchbook, then use EQ8’s fabric-mapping workflow. Electric Quilt recommends choosing fabrics with colors similar to those in the photo. When adding the design to the Project Sketchbook, do so from the quilt layer: adding it from the photo layer adds only the photo.
Can you trace a photo instead?
Yes. EQ8 can place an imported image in the background of the Block worktable, where you can trace it and toggle the reference image on or off. This is a manual way to draw a custom block from a photo; the image is not automatically converted into a quilt block. See Electric Quilt Support’s Tracing an Image guidance.

Turn the design into a makeable sewing pattern
EQ8 printouts can help a pattern writer with quilt and block information, but they are not full construction directions. Electric Quilt’s printout guidance states: “EQ8 does not provide written piecing instructions for the quilts you design in the software.” You must prepare the construction text separately, including the steps needed to assemble the pieces. Treat the on-screen design and printouts as planning aids, not as a tested, ready-to-sew pattern.
Photo Patchwork is not the same as printing photos on fabric
EQ8’s Photo Layout feature combines photos saved in the Sketchbook on one page and is intended for a separate printing use, such as arranging images or quilt labels on printable fabric sheets. It is not a required step for Photo Patchwork. The vendor’s instructions are in Turning a Photo into a Quilt.
